tv, internet, media

There was a big news report this week about this group of gals in Florida who savagely beat a girl who was previously their friend and posted nasty things about them in facebook. They got even by making a video of her beating and planned to post it on you-tube, beat her so savagely that she lost consiousness, lost vision in one eye and hearing in one ear, has concussion and face is so swollen that her parents did not recognize her.

The PARENTS of the perpetrators have made some statements about internet and tv being at blame here. OMG. What the hell is wrong with them? I mean sure internet is dangerous and tv needs to be strictly regulated but isnt this the JOB of parents??? TV can be a wonderful educational tool and a source of great enjoyment when used properly. Myself, I’ve used it improperly to get things done around the house and I know that it isnt the best thing to do. But never, ever would my boyz be involved in something like that. And my GOODNESS if god forbid they WERE, I would most certainly acknowledge their failing and not try to pass it off on internet or tv or ANYTHING else. Sheesh…THIS is the world that we live in and we all need to raise our kids to be able to handle it in a responsible manner. THAT is the entire thing in a nutshell. IMHO. What say you people?

Re: tv, internet, media

If the parents are like that, what can you expect from kids they have raised. What these girls did is the act of an animal, I hope they are thrown in jail and tortured for life.

Re: tv, internet, media

source pls?

Re: tv, internet, media

Only in America people blame for their actions on media. Other part of the world even Europeans have access to same media , but I have never heard of any Colombine High kind of crime or this FB kind of crime happening anywhere but USA. Why is it so ?
Even some psychiatrist come up with theories about media teaching people to behave in this way, why does same media not teach this to people in the other part of the world ?

Re: tv, internet, media

ok first, here is one of many links to the story:
http://video.msn.com/video.aspx?mkt=en-us&vid=5bd9fb50-3dfe-442b-8391-8e3c15d5baf1&fg=rss&from=34
It includes video of the milder portions of the beating that the victim endured.
It was announced today that the girls will be charged as adults which means hard time because they are facing felony charges…maybe THAT will wipe the smirks off their faces and stop their jailhouse-talk to the guards about whether they’ll miss cheerleading practice and (giggle giggle) “I guess WE arent going to the beach this weekend”. Hard time will change THAT attitude pretty fast.

Anyway, I really dont understand what it is about the USA. We have columbine, we have THIS. Yet our guns laws I think are a bit stricter than europe and when I was in Pak, almost EVERY house had at least a few firearms. We ALL have internet access, we ALL have TV.

So what IS it?

Re: tv, internet, media

I am not sure in this case but i believe a lot of behavioural problems in kids these days emerge because of lack of attention and time from their parents. In a lot of cases, the parents are too busy with their own work, trying to make ends meet or whatever there reasons are, and it takes away from the individual attention and discipline the kids need and requires.

Perhaps it is a defense attorney strategy in this case for the parents to say that its the media to be blamed and not their children?

Re: tv, internet, media

i agree...as for the tv use, well it has its advantages and disadvantages like most things so avoiding it is not the answer but using it properly is the way to go for it.

Re: tv, internet, media

un larkiyoon ke parents un ko tv aur internet kiu use kernay detay hain? :halo:

Re: tv, internet, media

I think its prob on the right track about how little time parents have for their little ones here in USA....as far as I can see, from my personal experience (which is, admittedly, rather limited), USA is the craziest, workingest, busiest place on the planet....if you dont have your kid signed up for some kinda club, activity or lesson every day of the week, it raises eyebrows, parents dont have time, vacation is two weeks or less per year and heck who can afford to do something really special anyway so might as well keep a-workin etc. While in europe and pak, there are 2 hour lunches, much more vaca time and much more value placed on being with family. Thats the ONLY difference I've seen. and again, my experience is rather limited but I think I got a pretty clear picture of lifestyles.

So any suggestions on how to fix?

Re: tv, internet, media

Mamaof3, how to fix what? i am not sure i understand.

Re: tv, internet, media

...how to fix the fact that in american society, little girls beat the brains out of their friend, picked-on boys come to school with bombs and fire-arms enough to blow away a small country, that kinda thing.

Re: tv, internet, media

Good lord, its so sad to see such animals are even able to RAISE kids.

Re: tv, internet, media

OMG thats awful.. i just got done reading a chapter on mental disorders..and surprize surprize ..which country tops mental disorder rating? US..ratio being 1:7, one in seven americans had suffered a clinically significant mental disorder during a prior year (US national institute of mental health interview study and fellow up study). We cant just prevent such things from happening..the problem is deep rooted. So lets not put the blame entirely on parents, there is always a biopsyschosocial axis involved.

Re: tv, internet, media

THROW AWAY YOUR TELIVISION, INTERNET AND BURN THE MEDIA!

I hate all these myspace, facebook BS plattforms! for what are these?
It is BS! BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS...

I was listenin' to peppers song "Throw Away Your Television"...Nowadays you can really throw away your television, leave it for sports, documentary and some comedy channels...the rest is BS...even the News...

When I was 5 I first had to read Qur'an and then I was allowed to watch TV...Only 1 hour...when I didn't read, Mom said "No"...Nowadays, people have life in TV, Internet etc.

Parents are right when they complain about such plattforms, they r totally right...are they offering their kids to watch these channels, visit these plattforms? It is the Media and most of the Media wants to kill your brain cells...believe me...

Buy your kid a good book and everything will be fine...it should be thick and interesting...give him the Qur'an or any other good book, but in the end it's up to you...

Re: tv, internet, media

Lack of values/respect. All kind - religious/cultural and all that you can think of. In search of making life so easy by not having complications of religion and traditions ppl have created a huge hole around them and they are keep digging in it to hide themselve but the sad part is they don’t knw at the end it will bury them and kill them.

Things are getting soo materialist and superficial that many of us don’t eve know where to go and run to when we face such problems. Its every where now, not only in America. America we see more since media is all over to cover every little story and detail compare to the other arts of the world.

I wouldn’t blame 100% to media/internet or tv. I believe strong family/parents are those who teach their kids the difference between the right and wrong using sources like religion and culture and then let their kids go free. If they were taught strongly then no matter where and which part of the world would they go - nothing can harm them as openely n freely as once might believe. If foundation is strong then no matter how many tornados and hurricanes u get hit by - u stand still strong.

Re: tv, internet, media

I blame the media 100 %!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they f'ckin kill ya mind...for what do I need this media...million people starve in this world and the media reports about it...instead of making money with those topics they could spend that money on bread and water for the poor, but you rather look at your own pocket than at anyone else...

I will teach my kids not 2 watch 2 much tv, I will, wait and see...more BS is comin'...I telly ya...

Re: tv, internet, media

for everyone who's blaming the media 100%, open your eyes. If kids don't watch it on t.v or the media..they might come across it in real-life. You meet all sort of people when you go to school or just outisde. What these kids really need is good values and nice tarbiyat.....so they can differentiate between good and bad. You can't cut them off from the world by taking away t.v, internet, media....but YOU CAN teach them what's appropriate and what's not. If they don't watch it on t.v...they ll see it elsewhere. I agree with EMM. Not to say that media doesn't play any role at all...it probably does....but it's how the individual who's a part of it interprets it.

Re: tv, internet, media

Sorry for an off topic comment, but you see no where was the religon of the culprits even mentioned / blamed in the news.

Had they been muslims, "Islam" would have been the main topic of discussion in the media. (Even if the reason of beating was not related to some fabricated religious excuse)

I am not against media, but am certainly against the brain washing done (even to muslims) by the western media against Islam, still some of us watch such news channels regularly. (Because they do it so professionally, that we think they are neutral. We don't even realize when they shift from the term "terrorists" to "Islamists" when they mention terrorism.)

Re: tv, internet, media

People who blame the media for every ill are idiots.

Re: tv, internet, media

If you really look at it, you cant blame media. In this one example, some of the parents of the arrested teens are blaming the media AND saying that the sheriff made a mountain out of a molehill (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) My GOODNESS.

All countries pretty much have media in all its forms. Behaving like a pack of animals is not the fault of the media. Its that the parents arent raising their kids anymore cause they're too busy. When I was a teen, I'd get grounded for a week for something like using a curse word. And I was taught to understand that actions have consequences. Many kids dont learn these things anymore. They need to learn these things by example and they need to start learning them while they're still young and at home. To see the parents of these little animals make excuses for them and to blame the internet is just beyond sick.

Anyway, the teens are all being charged as adults except the 14 year old. They can get up to life in prison for their little adventure. The victim is being home-schooled for the rest of her high school days and has lost vision and hearing in her left eye and ear.
