whatever gets the attention…‘aap’ can sometimes be a sign of weakness or affection, ‘tum’ can mean trying to be equal/smart or closeness, ‘thu’ can imply F.U or its time to do the disco. Basically, these references are time and mood dependent. Me and ma women dont rely much on these simple words, she gives me THE look and thats it…

"aap" sounds cute. I call him "aap" if i ever speak urdu..
but I like being called "tum" cus its less formal and their is some sort of intimacy there.

Whats up with the wives here and their preference to address their husbands as 'aap', whereas preferring to be addressed as 'tum' in return?
If I call my husband 'aap', then I'd want him to address me in the similar manner. On the same token, if I call him 'tum'... then he can address me as 'tum' in return and I wouldn't have any issues with it. There's gotta be some sort of balance.

hamm is usually used by lucknow people, but nowadays in pakistan - it is used in a collection

they want to show respect for their husbands while they still want to maintain some intimacy. we can’t say which is right and which is wrong because it’s a personal preference.

one thing i don't get is when people mix up certain words that don't belong together. ex: aap kya karai ho. it's supposed to be aap kya karain hain or tum kya karai ho. i heard from some pk international students that mixing up the words like this is the trend these days. why do people mess up the grammer?
why do some people make english seem like a superior language? it's good to know multiple languages but importance should be given to your own mothertongue. everyone is exposed to english, they learn it one way or another because it's the language of globalization. we seem to be the only sellouts. look at the arabs: whenever they see each other, even complete strangers that might look arab to them, they'll start speaking in arabic with each other. i hear a variety of languages on the streets and the one thing i rarely hear is urdu even from people who sound like they just stepped off the plane from pk.

Hmm I always use "aap" as opposed to "tum". Whether I am talking to my parents, youngsters , kids etc. And when I use 'aap' with them, they in turn use 'app' with me. I rarely use the word 'tum'.
