'tum' yaa 'aap'

Re: ‘tum’ yaa ‘aap’

I like using hum sometimes  That’s when the hubby makes fun of me :-p

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

"Hamm" was traditionally used by kings and people in power to show that it is not just their personal opinion, but the decision of their nation/community etc, for example, a king saying "hamm ne faysla kiya hai, ke hamm apni fojein angrezouN se jang ke liyay bhaijein ge". Its irrelevant if the decision is taken by just the badshah salamat or the entire cabinet, because thats the beauty of dictatorship and monarchy.

However, as Fraudia mentioned, some families, especially those with royal blood (like Mughals) or those with excessive formalities (like those from Lukhnow etc) still use "hamm" to refer to themselves. Those who are not used to it, can make a lot of fun on their account, as Rukhsar mentioned (e.g "so how many are you?" or "ok, so I know you are fat, but really....!")

Re: ‘tum’ yaa ‘aap’

the people that I know use it, it sounds really sweet and polite from their mouths. Not narcissistic at all!

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

^ are AAP married too? sub married ho gaeiy hain. Sirf HUM bachay. Hum, yaani mai aur Femme.

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

wow this is all very interesting! thanks to all of you for explaining.

Re: ‘tum’ yaa ‘aap’

Hum, is more of a royal “We” then a polite reference to yourself…

Re: ‘tum’ yaa ‘aap’

what has her being raised in the UK got to do with this?

If im speaking urdu with anybody, regardless of age, its always been “app” “tum” sounds a bit wierd.

It’s the punjabi version that gets me…“tu” yah “tussi” ??

Har aik ba'at pay kehtay ho tum Kay tu kia hay
Tumhee kaho kay yeh andaz-e-guftugu kia hay

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

'aap' is so gay. I prefer 'oye'

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

^ My kinda gal

Re: ‘tum’ yaa ‘aap’

haha! I use that too w/ close friends and husband :stuck_out_tongue: It is a lot of fun saying Oaay!

Re: ‘tum’ yaa ‘aap’

you mean hum (you) and tum (femme). I think of you guys as virtually married right now. Why bother w/ the I-do’s that brings in the whole pre-nup thing.

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

If there's a significant age difference, I guess I would refer to my husband as 'aap', but what if he's the same age as me? I think it would be funny referring to him as 'aap' then. My dad refers to my mum as 'tum' and my mum uses 'aap' - it all sounds very sexist now that I think about it.

Re: ‘tum’ yaa ‘aap’

LOL I been trying to tell them that. Rukhsar, when did you get married? Whats up with everyone getting married? Am I the only one who is not up for it.
