'tum' yaa 'aap'

Re: ‘tum’ yaa ‘aap’

Minah it is more polite to say "aap’ rather than “tum” Some people like FG’s friend might fiind it disrespectful if refered to as tum. I know w/ elders you always say “aap” out of respect.

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

Thank you

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

Minah Baji, app sounds polite and is generally used for elders or people unacquainted. Tum is more frank and is used for people of same age. You can say 'app' is like how Japanese use 'san'.

In my household everyone calls each other app. I even call my little daughter app. But I know families where 'tum' is more prevalent.

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

we call each other "app". he sometimes says 'tum' as well. doesnt matter though. whatever one is comfortable with.

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

I prefer aap aswell but unfortunately .........

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

^ you dont get called "tu" or ' abay oye" do ya? :)

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

^ :D

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

I understand, thank you, ahmadjee

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

aap :)

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

If anybody that woman needs a slapping....

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

i didn't know "hum" is the polite word for "mein"...

i don't know if any of you know french but the whole "aap"/"tum" deal is similar with "vous"/"tu" pronouns, which is nice.

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

But seriously, don't 'tum' girls feel being addressed as 'aap' by him is less intimate?. It's so formal. Don't you feel like his mom when he calls you 'aap'?

Re: ‘tum’ yaa ‘aap’

Yep - reminds me of vous/tu as well.
I call myself Hum sometimes too and then my husband goes “hum? who else was there?”

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

abay oye kahaan thaa tu...HUM kab say intizaar farma rahay thai

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

yeah i thought "hum" was used as a plural like "nous" in french...

Re: ‘tum’ yaa ‘aap’

It is I believe in proper urdu same as “nous” in french. But a lot of people use it to refer to themselves. Again as a politeness factor. An aunt of mine says ‘hum’ quite a bit when refering to herself and she said she was taught that ‘main’ sounds inappropriate so you should respect yourself and refer to yourself as ‘hum’

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

hmmmm thanks for explaining it. i still prefer "mein", less confusing and nicer...you know, instead of saying something like "hum ja rahain hai" which sounds plural, "mein jarahi hoon" sounds singular.

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

it depends on who you have for company

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

'hum' sounds so cocky

Re: 'tum' yaa 'aap'

^ I know. It sounds so full of it...even an element of narcism.
