Interestingly, the word 'tu' has some seriously potent poetic value in Pakistani literature (it is probably the most proficiently used method of addressing someone in Urdu poetry), but somehow the word doesn't add any charm in daily conversations. Even if you are lovers, referring to each other as 'tu' in normal conversation wouldn't sound so romantic.
With that let's give an example of my all time favoruite verse from Urdu poetry that used the word 'tu':
***Nahin tera nash-e-mann kasr-e-sultani kay gumband per
Tu Shaheen hai basera ker paharon ki chatanon per
***From Ilama Iqbal's poem '*Ik Nojawan ke Naam'. *This poem gets me going like nothing else. I recommend everyone to refer to this poem whenever they feel down and defeated. You'll get rid of these two words from your dictionary for forever.

by the way...in Urdu poetry, the use of 'tum', 'tu' and 'aap' or 'teraa' and 'tumhaaraa' or 'meraa' and hamaaraa interchangeably is considered a 'short-coming' [noqs] of poetry...[shaa'irii ke naqaa'is]...it's called 'shutur-Gorbaa' [camel-cat]...it has been declared 'illegal' in poetry writing...
...however, some stalwarts [ustad] of Urdu poetry have legalized for themselves while it's still illegal for non-ustaad poets.
one such example is this she'r by Momin KhaN "Momin":
jise aap ginte the aashanaa, jise aap kahte the baa_wafaa
maiN vohii huN 'Momin'-e-mubtilaa, tumheN yaad ho k na yaad ho

TLK is correct, bro. Tu is used for Allah to emphasize Oneness.
And the addressee in the sentence 'mein tum se mukhatib hoon', could be one or more. Again, 'tum logon' will be used here for emphasis on 'you people' (not 'any other people').
if i consider TLK's assertion as correct then why would we refrain from calling Allah as "tum or aap' because Allah in Qur'aam addresses Himself as "WE"? the oneness of Allah is in the word "WE" as it's a royal way of saying "I".
agar Allah kii waHdaaniyat lafz-e-"ham" se majrooH nahiiN hotii to phir 'TUM' se kaise ho saktii hai?
isii liye meraa maannaa hai k Allah ko "TU" kahnaa qurbat kii taraf ishaara kartaa hai.

Where is the kaur? I want to ask her Punjab ka 'tu' Delhi / Lucknow punch kar 'aap' se kaise deal karta hai? :p
With all due respect, try to show the qurbat in this style to your dad or grand dad, and you will spend the rest of the afternoon as a murghaa.

Hence my point that the use of tu is not for qurbat. We show aajizi, inkisaari and bandagee to allah, not qurbat or rishtaydaari.

Don't punjabis speak tu instead of aap? My mom didn't get it the first time when the host told her in "tu" language that my dad had come to pick her up...
Indians also speak very blunt language unless you are KKF but he is one of a kind... :D

Words such as tussi, tuada, and* tuanu* are Punjabi language's *'aap' *i.e polite and formal 'you'.

Hence my point that the use of tu is not for qurbat. We show aajizi, inkisaari and bandagee to allah, not qurbat or rishtaydaari.
na'oozobillah k Allah se koii apnii rishtedaarii joRne kaa soche...Allah in rishtedaariyoN se [jaisii rishtadaarii ham samajhte haiN] Paak hai.
bandagii ek zarii'a hai Allah se qurbat kaa...bande kaa Allah se qurbat rakhnaa hii to Haasil-e-zeest hai aur yehii hamaaraa nasb ul ai'n bhii honaa chaahiye.
'allamah Iqbaal ne farmaayaa thaa k:**
miTaa de apnii hastii gar kuchh martaba chaahe!
bande kaa Allah se agar qurbat maqsood na hotii to Allah Qur'aan meN kiuN farmaataa k ham tumhaarii shah-rag se bhii ziyaada tum se qareeb haiN!**
vaise, aapne mere pahle sawaal kaa jawaab nahiiN diyaa. :(

I really appreciate how Pakistanis are such dedicated and stylish users of the word 'app', and in my view the word alone makes the whole conversation sound so sophisticated and pleasant on the ears, plus the speaker comes across so effortlessly cultured.
Both my parents use aap for everyone, mashaAllah. So, I was raised by both of them.....but especially by my mother to use 'aap' for everybody regardless of age and relations. But I picked up the 'tum' habit from my friends at school. :( So, it's become a habit to use 'tum' for friends and cousins that are younger or within my age range. Gotten scoldings from my mom; I need to go revert back to the former, more classier way.

I'm Punjabi. Many in my family use aap.
Tum is still more tolerable than tujhay and tera/teray. And the 'teray ko...meray ko" style...shudder

My Father has always used the word aap for all his children even when we were young (and notoriously shararti), and same is the case with my uncles. My parents use the Punjabi variant of aap when talking to each other or people in general.
