When can we lie? Is it ethical to lie? lets not discuss extreme situations, i am talking about our daily routine lies
Is lying allowed by any religion?
Is lying in jokes allowed?
As generally people say ‘hum nay tu mazak keya tah’ isnt that a lie? **
Are we allowed to lie in 'MAZAAK" ??

Straight off the bat let me say NO its not correct . But philosophically thinking we can argue and say ‘what if we have to save some life?’ . So you can always challenge most logical truth . Look at our politicians , they lie through their teeth and still show their proud face . If you ask them they do it for the sake of greater good .

its not allowed to lie but if it can save someone’s life, or can save a husband wife relation, or if it can help make up between two brothers, then you can lie or avoid telling the truth which can cause break up or aggravate the situation. other then those situation there is no such permission to do so, ethically or religiously.
2ndly as far as mazaaq is concerned, you should do mazaaq in a way that other person clearly knows that you are kidding and not serious. that most hidious mazaaq i have seen is boys n gals flirt with each other and when one of them gets seriously interested, the other say oh yaar woh tou mazaaq tha. i was never serious. mein ne tou kabhi aisa socha bhi nahin."

Namaan but i am talking about everyday lies....ones that DOES NOT benefit ANYONE.... lies that are used in jokes.....wen clearly the other person is unaware of the joke and take their lie seriously and believe them....

Thats wat i am getting at.... but today its so common that we dont even realize we are lying it became our habit... we think we cant even go through a single day without lying.... how sad...
And for me shocking is when mature people lie so seriously that other person doesnt recognize they are lying OR telling the truth......

When you clarified the question, then answer is no.
One cannot say lying is bad or not allowed by itself, even though it is considered a negative trade in general.
Yes, you can lie...You are only allowed to lie, only if it does good to humanity
here is a case study:
Some gundas are running after you, you take shelter in my home.
If those gundas ask for you,then its my duty to lie and save your life.
God has given us Common sense and a beautiful brain. Its use is highly advisable.

And I was going to give example of robbers coming to your home and asking for your little child (hiding somewhere) so they could kidnap. No one will be faulted if lie to protect the child.
Sometimes you tell a depressed/paranoid person there is no medicine in the juice!
Hence it all depends on scenario and clarificaton of question helped.

Uuuufff no case studies plz no hypothetical situations … all i am asking is stupid lies that we use while joking… i think i wasnt clear …

Please use your common sense/brains before you lie…Personally I’ve lied to give pleasant surprises to family and friends on their B’days and anniversaries and in harmless jokes with people near to me…I dont see any harm in that
Again, as humans God expects us to use our brains rather than to act like a dry/brain dead religious person.

I did mention that my case did not apply after your explanation of question and that is what I wanted to mention.
Yes it should not be a big problem in lying in mazaq if other person takes it lightly.
But, no one cannot really expect the reaction of other and the reaction to joke may be quite unpredictable.

Some people are too sensitive to take mazaq as it is and some can take mazaq with open heart. Still unpredictable.
In that sense:

I personally think that you sometimes have to lie for the better. If it’s OK or not, well it’s up to every individual to decide for themselves.
In some schools of thoughts in Shia Islam it’s OK to lie in extreme situations. I think they call it “Taqiyya”.

Lie 100% if it is needed. When we were robbed in Darfur, we came to the normal stage where they usually beat internationals. Our Nepali hindu friends lied about his name and religion and we got left alone.
Me and my other colleague were Pakistani Muslims. We said he was also Pakistani. He gave a muslim name and recited some quran he knew.
So yes Lying is definitely worth it in situations.
