A very shocking and sad story.

I wonder how on earth the police could set about identifying each of the thousands of people involved in this mob? How should justice be served?

At any rate, the government should immediately invest in building a few more prisons in the area as thousands of Bahawalpuri men need to be sent to jail to be executed for their participation in this murder. Until they get hung the government will need a jail to hold them.

ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani police official says thousands of people beat a man to death, and burned his corpse after he was accused of desecrating the holy Quran.

Local officer Mohammed Azhar Gujar said Wednesday the man was killed after attackers stormed a police station where he had been detained for allegedly throwing pages from the Quran onto the street.

Gujar says police officers tried to protect the man during Tuesday’s attack, but the mob turned violent. They burned several police vehicles and wounded seven officers before grabbing the man, who has not been identified.

The incident was reported to have taken place in the Ahmedpur East area of Punjab’s Bahawalpur district.

Pakistan’s anti-blasphemy laws make defaming Islam or the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), or desecrating the holy Quran, punishable by death, but incidents of attacks by furious mobs are commonplace in the country following allegations of blasphemy.

On June 17, a crowd attempted to lynch a blasphemy suspect as they tried to storm into the police station where he was held. A group of lawyers attempted to attack the same suspect the next day following his production in court but policemen successfully foiled both attacks.

In Quetta last month, a man was killed as a mob attacked a police station holding a “mentally retarded” man also suspected of desecrating the holy book.

Former Punjab governor Salman Taseer was shot dead in January last year by one of his police bodyguards for opposing the blasphemy law.

Also, since the crowd were clearly hurting the police, why did they not open fire? The police in Pakistan have Kalashnikovs, after killing a few hundred murderously violent rioters the remaining thousands should be encouraged to go home. Other stories on this incident report that the police did try and use tear-gas but the mob persisted.

The natural next step when non-lethal force fails to uphold law and order is to use lethal force.

The arrested man had the right to face trial for blasphemy. Mob rule is an abomination.

When there is law against blasphemy then public does not have any islamic right to punish the accused ....he must be tried in court of law and then punished

^^ Chop of the heads of the leaders of this mob... hang them up and do not let them get funeral as Muslim suppose to get, these mobs have done a bigger blasphemy then the so-called person might have... if the punishment of such thing is death, then the leaders of such mobs should have the same treatment...

Molvis won't come in favour of law talking its course in such cases. We have seen what happened in the case of Salman Taseer. I am not sure how many of those in the mob would be regular namazi, yet they assumed themselves to be the sole protector of Islam and decided to dispense justice then and there.

Now see, that’s the hardest part.

I’d have a hard time holding myself if I was this guy below. Most people who call themselves (or have their follower label them) as “Maulana” know only a few things. Eat, sleep, and occasionally spit out some random babblings. Rinse and repeat every day. Free cash, unlimited aish. But the real Aalims usually are away from the picture, doing good stuff, and spreading religion.

Take a look at the bigger fish, and it’s mostly all rotten now, divided into sects, putting themselves ahead of the nation and religion. They love chaos, the more the better. Because when everyone is barking, that’s when they’ll bark the loudest, and illiterate people will listen to them.

These were the saraiki nutjobs, the same folks who the Gilanis and Zardaris want to separate from Punjab because they want to capitalize on the idiocy of people similar to those who participated in this mob attack. Theres your racism quota for the day.

Wouldnt it be funny if on the day of judgement, all of this mob is burning in hell, while the person they burned to death is in heaven because he was actually innocent?

I am slightly baffled by this case.

Theres no doubt the mob acted wrongly.

However theres no point in shooting into a crowd of frustrated people. That will make matters even worse.

I think the root cause of the entire problem is actually the deep sense of frustration among Muslims as a whole and then when you combine the state Pakistan is in right now, no wonder everyone seems so volatile in these places.

From what I understand of this sort of thing, there was a time I too could have easily been swept into the ranks of such mobs... riots are the manifestation of peoples frustrations with the very systems that uphold society, when people reach this level even the most crazy notions will be accepted if they are seen as a way of getting back at things.

Now if things like this are to be avoided in the future several social issues need to be addressed.

First is the monoploy that Molvis have on society, too much influence from the Molvi baraderee is dangerous.

Secondly corruption in the system from Politicans to Soldiers, Police, burgers... the poor dacoits and cut-throat street urchins who swarm all acorss the land all need to be dealt with.

Thirdly people need to forge thier own identity and individual skills and learn to think independantly for themselves rather than take for granted what others tell them and learn that they too have power not just the ones with guns or books.

this is a barbaric act, all those who were involved in this incident should be put behind the bars.
what is even more saddening that guy who burnt the Holy Quran was not even mentally stable.
nobody deserves to die like that.

If the victim of this was indeed mentally unstable then he is tantamount to being innocent.

I wait for that day, when we will abolish this man made law, it promotes nothing but religious intolerance and hatred, same hatred which killed Salman Taseer.

Your right. This is why I always advocate for secularism. Religion is being foisted on this stupid society, by people with ill intent, seeking their own cut from the hide of this poor pathetic country.

Marx was right when he said that religion is the Opiate of the Masses. Opiates make you do stupid things, like burning some poor guy alive even while he is in jail, while the Taliban are happily beheading Pakistani soldiers and people are of dying for want of basic needs.
