So I have recently come to know a lot of ingredients that make a food product un-halal.
If we have such a list already please let me know so we can merge.
Please add on.

Re: The HALAL issue
I knew whey and yeast are mushbooh (that is it could be halal or haram depending on certain characteristics )..I forget what they are. But Enzymes in cheese are haram? Oh my..
Re: The HALAL issue
Yes I hear Kraft cheeses are
Re: The HALAL issue
isn't whey is wheat :(
isn't whey is wheat :(
sorry no..big difference b/w whey and wheat..from my research whey is a liquidy by product in curdling the milk. and during the curdling rennet (which could be halal or haram) is used, hence whey could be halal or haram.
""Rennet is used to curd the milk. Whey should be avoided because the rennet used to curd the milk could be from a haram or non-Zabihah animal. ""
Re: The HALAL issue
if it's microbial enzymes, thats not haram so we should be okay.. also if the cheese package says no animal rennet and still lists enzymes in the ingredients it is halal.
and by the way cabbot has a sign for both kosher and halal as well as no animal renent label on it so go cabbot :D
Re: The HALAL issue
yaar so confused...
Are you sure? I called them once and they told me that all their cheeses are kosher except for 2-3 specific ones -I forget which ones, they were from either Denmark or Belgium or something
Re: The HALAL issue
Monodigyclerides also need to be checked, as they can come from animal sources sometimes. Call the company to verify or check for a kosher symbol
Re: The HALAL issue
Is this Kraft issue specific to USA? Some Kraft stuff here is suitable for veggies.
As for whey etc, whey is separated from curds using veggie rennet, then it's ok.
Re: The HALAL issue
Cochineal/ Carmine- red food colouring derived from crushed insects
The colouring is also used in drinks and cosmetics.

Re: The HALAL issue
**there is a comprehensive about on the subject entitled:
Haraam N Halaal

We can check lot of things on muslim consumer website
I know, it sounds and is pretty gross. Luckily here in the UK, it is quite easy to detect if this is in the ingredients. I believe in America that it is not easy to distinguish if this is present in foodstuffs, drinks etc. However, in 2011 it will have to be declared.

Re: The HALAL issue
balsamic vinegar, spirit vinegar…
Canadian Halal Foods, Inc - Search
the most frustrating one i found was this:
Apple Juice is made from Halal fruit Apple and the ingredients statement says it is 100% apple juice. However, during the processing of apple juice, the colloidal material and coarse suspended solids cause cloudiness to apple juice. In order to make apple juice clear, a clarification process is needed. Pork or beef gelatin tannin precipitation is used for this clarification.
Many apple juice producers still use this method. An apple juice company’s 800 number can be found on an apple juice package, which does not have a kosher symbol on it. If you call this number, the operator will say that their apple juice does not contain animal derived ingredients and alcohol. However, the pork gelatin-tannin is a processing aid ingredient or hidden ingredient. This juice becomes Haram because of a contamination of pork gelatin.
Since some apple juice processors in USA and Europe use pork or beef gelatin in apple juice processing. In USA, Halal or Kosher certification protect Muslims in USA/Canada not to consume apple juice where gelatin is used in processing by having a Halal or Kosher symbol on the apple juice containers. But this is not the case with Europe and in Muslim countries. No efforts to protect their Muslim consumers in Muslim countries from gelatin used apple juice has been reported
