If we are muslims we have think like muslims. Basant is NOT a festival for muslims, it is a hindu festival. Anyone celebrating or promoting basant is promoting a hindu festival.

So how many hindus celebrate Basant (kite flying) in India ? Its Punjabi festival & existed before Muslims came in to the area. Slowly Muslims started taking insterest in it & now its just a festival.

As a festival I am not against it, therez been kite flying for ages, but the people being killed in large number (problem) started few years back when the thread (doore) with chemical came in market. 10 or 15 years ago, thin thread was used only with some "Manja" but now, the thread is thick like a rope & instead of "Manja" a chemical is used. This brings death for people on bicycles & motor-bikes.
In old days, the doore used to break quickly not giving much harm
1) it used to be thin
2) Manja was not working as knife (as chemical does).
So majority of people used to get some scratches. There was rarely any death due to string cuts etc. We used to hear people falling from roof tops but not having slaughtered by doore.
As far as kite flying with metal string is concerned, why WAPDA is putting 11KV or 66KV Poles in residential areas? Even 220 is dangerous enough, we see 11000 & 66000 volts lines just as high as 220 volts. WAPDA should control Rishwat khori & spend some money to put all Electric lines under ground. Also anyone found flying kite with metal should be charged with some punishment ending up confinement with a criminal record (since Government has implemented crimincal record database now).
Its two way thingee, Government should play their role & people should play theirs & enjoy the festival. But again, why am I writing all these, those outlaws (including government officials) will never read it anyway.

- Ban the sharp metal dore.
- Ban guns and such.
- Ban fireworks in small crowded neighbourhoods. Anyone who is caught breaking these rules should be prosecuted severely, they'll soon learn.
Those that drink alcohol, let them drink, when they fall from the roof intoxicated and smash their brains open they'll only have themselves to blame.
In my opnion it shouldn't be banned altogether, it has nothing to do with religion, it is a secular non-religious celebration of spring, Basant is just another word for Bahaar (spring) in Urdu.
It is a wonderful time to celebrate and party, if you want to ban unIslamic celebrations, ban the fairs and worship that take place at shrines of some dead saint, that resembles Hinduism more than this.
The reason people dress in yellow is to mirror the mustard flowers which blossom in this season (nothing more beautiful than a sarson field), it has nothing to do with Hinduism as many think because orange (not yellow) is their sacred color..
Vasant-Panchami is a pagan Hindu festival but it only shares its name with our Basant and Hindus don't have monopoly over the word "Spring"..

^I totally agree with you, the festival has nothing to do with the deaths. The people who break the law should be isolated and dealt with. For me it's same as saying there are too many people dying in accidents and instead of finding the bad drivers you ban the driving itself.

every year on Hajj, numerous hajjis are killed. does that mean hajj sud be banned? People are killed because of other stupid people, simple as that. Basant has nothing to do with these deaths.

This is a direct consequence of the number of people participating in the event; restrict or control the number and you'll have no complaint.
People who are involved in stampedes aren't stupid...this simply admits to an ignorance of crowd dynamics.
The authorities tried to regulate the kite flying activites; people were indeed being stupid by not following them. Restricting the number of people celebrating Basant is nonsensical, and will have no effect.
The Ban makes sense...

Well basant really wan't celebrated with the same fervor this time around. Its attributed mainly to the strict policies and s ome to the high prices of kites this year as there is an all year ban on them. There were hardly any kites in the sky on basant night but things were a lil different in the morning.
