Re: The Big Thread of Baby Names

Yeah, it’s a really nice name but I’ve got a new baby cousin called Zaina and annoyingly half the family seem to pronounce it Zy (rhymes with ‘sky’)-nah and the other Zay-nah…

Re: The Big Thread of Baby Names

I loved the name of Faryal Khan’s new baby Lamysa but they’ve apparently changed the spelling to Lamaiysa (or something like that) to reflect a different pronounciation.. Not keen on that variation..

Re: The Big Thread of Baby Names

I also really like Lamees/Lameesa

I haven’t seen it with the alternate spelling, but the “y” is nice too.

Was not aware that Faryal & Amir were pronouncing it differently :bummer:

Re: The Big Thread of Baby Names

Lameesa/Lamysa has a lovely ‘soft’ tone to it..

I have a bit of an obsession with baby names starting with vowels but that’s defo one I’ll have to make a note of

Re: The Big Thread of Baby Names

They went from Lamysa to Lamysah, and now it is Lamaisah :hoonh:

Re: The Big Thread of Baby Names

Me and my hubby dabble in names now and again.
So far we both kinda like Sahiba (girl) and Samar (guy)

We both like desi names, aren’t into giving them anglo names

Re: The Big Thread of Baby Names

So I’ve been a frequent lurker of Paklinks and enjoy coming to this site; finally decided to join.

How do the following names sound for a girl?

Aaira, Afsheen, Ambreen, Daniya.

Which one would you pick from this list? Or do you have suggestions for a name?

Thanks! :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: The Big Thread of Baby Names

I have always liked Ambrin (عمبرين). It means “scent” in Pashto.

Re: The Big Thread of Baby Names

^ So I’m guessing you’re either a Pakistani or Afghani Pathan?

I heard that Ambreen means “sky” in Arabic.

I really like Aaira and Daniya is a close 2nd.

Re: The Big Thread of Baby Names

Yes, I’m Afghani. Ambrin is a common Pashtun name meaning “scent” or “fragrance.” The Pashto spelling is عمبرين and it has a variety of spellings in English, most commonly Ambrin, Anbarin, or Ambreen. The pronunciation is the same though.

I’m not certain what the meaning may be in other languages though. It is possible that it also has a meaning in Arabic.

Re: The Big Thread of Baby Names

I like daniya and ayra.
ambreen is pretty but reminds me of the 80s. I grew up knowing lots of mehreens, samreens, ambreens, afsheens etc. at school.

Re: The Big Thread of Baby Names

Yeah I’m trying to convince my wife on these two names. I love the way Aaira sounds.

Re: The Big Thread of Baby Names

Aaira is pretty. I’ve heard it pronounced a couple of different ways. Out of curiousity, what is the correct pronunciation, or rather how do intend to pronounce it?

Re: The Big Thread of Baby Names

I just got done with iftar and dinner.

Lol good question! I’ve been thinking for a while on the correct or proper pronunciation. I pronounce the name like A Ah Rha…not sure if that’s even the right pronunciation based on the spelling of the name haha :halo:

Re: The Big Thread of Baby Names

I like Aria/Ariya.. but it’s not really a Muslim name..

Re: The Big Thread of Baby Names

^ Hmmm, after that I’m leaning towards Daniya. A little bummed. :teary1:

Re: The Big Thread of Baby Names

^Daniya is a beautiful name..

Re: The Big Thread of Baby Names

AY-ra is how i’d pronounce it with AY rhyming with SKY. I prefer Ayra to Aaira which looks confusing.

AR-ya is a different name altogether. I prefer the Aria spelling as it then means a long, accompanied song for a solo voice, typically one in an opera or oratorio.
