Re: Stretching Your Dollar

Yes. Really.

It’s not the happening 80s anymore.

I guess the only exceptions are if you are a young spring chicken or you are courting. :hehe:

Re: Stretching Your Dollar

Decent.. Never heard of peak hours for electricity. Is this Canadian thing? How did you find out about it?

Re: Stretching Your Dollar

I am sure many other places also have some version of on/off peak hours but yeah, we have it here in Ontario. Your power company send you reminders about change of hours (if they are adjusting the hours and/or rate). These rates are normally adjusted 2...3 times a year depending on supply and demand.

Current Schedule
7pm-7am - off peak hours - $0.065/kwh
7:01-11am and 5:01-7pm -** mid peak hours** - $0.1/kwh
Noon-5pm - peak hours - $0.117/kwh

See off peak rate is almost half of what peak rate is so its prudent to do laundry, ironing, dishwshing etc during off peak hours.

Re: Stretching Your Dollar

We do the same. Laundy, dishwasher is used in off-peak hours.

Another tip - for people who aren't home during the daytime, you can put a timer on your thermostat to turn off for the hours you're not home and then kick back on an hour before you're scheduled to return so that the house heats up/cools down for when people are actually in the house.

Re: Stretching Your Dollar

hmm interesting. we only get bill every month. no reminder about these peak hours. Can I see that on my bill?

Re: Stretching Your Dollar

Just check with your hydro company to see if they have this pricing structure.

Re: Stretching Your Dollar

They have peak off peak electricity hours in the US too.. I don't think they have it on your bill but you can google it or check out electric company website

Re: Stretching Your Dollar

Just called our electric company and we don't have it. :(

Good to know though!!!

Re: Stretching Your Dollar

Good. You can continue doing your household chores round the clock. :k: No excuses.

Re: Stretching Your Dollar

I am loving this thread. All these things I never even think about. I am so embarrased to admit that my last two month electricity bill was $1000 ... I've never even thought about these things that you guys mention. I shop at costco because umm because I like shopping not because of the savings. I really need to get that savings attitude. I never use coupons even when I have them sitting at home :(

Life must be good living in the Mc. Mansion and having $1,000,000 in the bank. :k:

Re: Stretching Your Dollar

I have read on various places that it is not a good idea to completly turn off the heat but lower the temperature as it takes more energy to start heating the place again. Same for airconditioning.

Re: Stretching Your Dollar

Good news. TLK does not have to pay Spiral’s electric bill.

Re: Stretching Your Dollar

Yes. That's what they invented the thermostat for.

Also if you live in the colder regions, people know not to go below 55 dgrees Fahrenheit to protect plumbimg from damage.

Re: Stretching Your Dollar

Yikes!!! That is really, really, REALLY high!

How large is your home (bedroom or square footage-wise and which part of the country do you live in? There must be tips and tricks for you to bring down your electricity usage.

Re: Stretching Your Dollar

Make sure local airport is not powering their runway lights with your metered line.

Where do you live? and is this electric + water bill or just electric?
