Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

But you are comparing apples to oranges. English players play fast bowling better than leg-spin. So comparing Asif's short performance with Mushy'd vast county experience is not fair either.

I agree.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

No doubt Mushtaq has been performing wonderfully well in the county circuit but the question is will Pakistan be playing with 2 specialist leg spinners in their side?

I am not saying that they can't but are they willing to try this combination with Shoaib Malik already playing and probably afridi as well. That makes 4 spinners in the side which will be too much.

If Mushtaq is going to play, then they have to include him in place of Kaneria. Now the next question is, whether Mushtaq will be picked up for future tours as well or not, after England. If not, then it would not only be unfair to drop Kaneira but will also shake his confidence.

Regardless of Mushtaq's performance in county, if PCB is not going to include him in future tours, than it doesn't make any sense to exclude your number 1 spinner from the side just for one tour.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

talk about jumping to conclusions ... I guess I never meant that .. I was just trying to point out that what you wrote about Asif's performances against England was not true :). Please quote a couple of examples if you htink you were right!

I definitely rate Asif pretty high but thats a different story!

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

Sir jee I was just kidding about Saqlain. But to be honest Mushtaq won’t do any good if he is selected for national team. Even if he does good that will be only on English pitches (still doubt he would do good when playing for national team) and I would not select a player just based on country to country. I would prefer a player who can be part of the team in the long run and can be aggressive either at home or away. Basically I would prefer new talent instead of picking old talent.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

mushtaq has been given many chances aftr performing superbly in county, but has really not proven anything on international level....
disappointing both from him and azhar....

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

Let's not be too critical here, i think this is the best possible squad available. Mushtaq can take 1000 wickets in county in a year but we shouldn't be selecting him on series to series basis, Kaneria MUSt play ahead of any spinner as long as he is available (even though he hasn't been in devastating form of late).
Shahid Nazir is very handy bowler in English conditions and is definitely a better choice than Rao.
Sami is back :( but we don't really have an option right now.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

I remember when Mushtaq was in an equally devastating form, if not better a few years ago in county...and he got picked for the squad against South Africa. He played 2 test matches and I watched both of them...and he was nothing to write about...very average and never looked threating against SA batsmen...who are not known for their batting against spinners.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

Aha so the mystery is solved, so Shahid Nazir is the new face and will have full rights and privileges of a sight seeing tourist :k: well done!!!

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

on a serious note:

I hope the 6 pack of fast bowling (Razzy included) that is choosen for UK remain intact beyond WC07 and only addition in the pace battery could be of shoaib Akther and if Razzy is injured(God forbid) Yasir Arafat could fill the gap.

I really hope openers Malik - Butt/ Farhat, will play with confidence since the selectors backed them and showed faith in them, keyword for the team selected is “Consistency” :k:

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

as for spinners well the coach says....

Woolmer hinted that he might not be needed: "Danish [Kaneria] is our No. 1 spinner but we also have back-up in Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik. The pitches at that time of year in England will also have uneven bounce so we're looking more at our seam attack to do the work."

***now Pakistan has produced very good world class spinners but Woolmer just want someone to fill the gap, nice way to discourage the domestic spinners; Tahir Khan and Rauf (in them he saw so much potential)

No wonder Saffies were not able to find any good spinners during his coaching period and I am sure Pakistan will neither. Yes Danish Kaneria is good but only in Test and sometimes not a class act. and speaking of support spinners well if Afridi and Malik are your back-up then by the start of WC07 younis khan and farhat will be quality spinner :o

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

Come on, you guys still aren't over Mushtaq? We seriously don't need him with Kaneria AND Afridi in the playing 11. Besides, he has always been taking a lot of wickets at the county level, but doesn't do much when he was given a chance in the side. Kind of like Hasan Raza and his scores on the domestic scene. Look to the future people!

I personally would like to see a bowling attack of Afridi, Asif, Razzaq, Kaneria, Rana and Malik. I don't see Nazir getting any matches as it will be tough to squeeze even Sami or Gul in the side. On the batting front, I hope Butt gets his chance. It could be his last chance for a while.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

Shahid Nazir finally selected, whew! That sure is good news.

Mohammed Yusuf still in the squad, thats bad news he deserves a much needed break.

Was'nt Rana unfit? so how come he got selected?

Akmal and Kaneria performance will be afected negatively if they have replacements available? Now thats really genuine, can only cud hv come from inept idiots whose only talent is kissing butt and being malleable rubber stamps.

Having two regular openers (Butt and Farhat) is again mind boggling when the team is carrying 5 seam bowlers when we all know Razzia is the 6th who will most likely be in the squad.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

‘Bari expressed that Rao was also in contention for a place, saying that the bowler has solid chances of making the cut for Pakistan’s ODI squad later this summer and added that a couple of changes would be made to the team after the Test series. Pakistanwill play five ODIs against England after the conclusion of a four-match Test series.’

Oh no Rao may be selected for the ODI. Why can’t they experiment with someof the younger chaps from the under 19 squad - they may get hammered or may not do well but it no doubt will provide them with good learning experience.

Other change may be the PCB’s favourite crickter chacha Arshad Khan been given another opportunity to go on a foreign holiday.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

Do you mean he is the bowlers of the highest quality at county level or at international level. If you mean at county level then you are probably correct - however if its at international level then there is a question mark or would you regard him as a bowler who has a making of highest quality?

I think you can regard someone as bowler of highest quality if they had repeatedly performed at the 'highest' level. Before you start lecturing me on the fact he hasn't been plying regularly for Pakistan....yes this is the case. He will be given his chance against England and if he continues to perform like he has done for Sussex at the highest level regularly then you should call him a bowler 'of highest quality'.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

Anyone know how good this Shahid Nazir is? Any idea on how fast he bowls? etc. etc.
Thanks

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

I am not sure his speed in terms of mph - but he is fast-medium type bowler.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

I regard him as the bowler of highest quality at International level. No, i am not going to lecture or argue with you. That is my view, take it or leave it.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

You can keep it.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

Remember watching him 9-10 years ago when he came into the scene. Was impressive in Carlton and United world series, specially in the best of 3 finals against Windies back in 96-97 when Pakistan won the series.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

I remember that series as well. He faded away after that. Mind you he had lot of competition in those days. Don't know how good or effective he will be now.
