Pakistan’s selectors have reacted to Shoaib Akhtar’s latest injury setback by recalling the forgotten paceman, Shahid Nazir, in a 16-man squad for next month’s Test series in England.
Nazir, 28, played the last of his eight Tests against Sri Lanka in 1999 and was not included in any of the five one-day games on last year’s tour of India. He was named as one of six fast bowlers in the squad, which will play four Tests and five one-day games.
Pakistan arrive in the country on July 1, after which they play a warm-up match against Leicestershire before the first Test starts at Lord’s on July 13.
Pakistan suffered a crucial blow on Wednesday when Shoaib was ruled out for at least six weeks after scans revealed an ankle fracture sustained last year had not properly healed.
Taufiq Umer, Asim Kamal, Zulqarnain Haider and Rao Iftikhar have been placed on stand-by in case of further injury.
Pakistan squad Inzamam-ul Haq (capt), Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, Shoaib Malik, Salman Butt, Imran Farhat, Kamran Akmal, Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq, Danish Kaneria, Faisal Iqbal, Muhammad Sami, Rana Naved, Mohammad Asif, Umar Gul, Shahid Nazir.
So Rao is in the “stand-by” list and not in the main squad as many guppies wanted ![]()
Shahid Nazir is in squad to cover Shoaib Akhtar’s job, while Mohammed Sami might make up for the much needed spin department.
