Pakistan’s selectors have reacted to Shoaib Akhtar’s latest injury setback by recalling the forgotten paceman, Shahid Nazir, in a 16-man squad for next month’s Test series in England.

Nazir, 28, played the last of his eight Tests against Sri Lanka in 1999 and was not included in any of the five one-day games on last year’s tour of India. He was named as one of six fast bowlers in the squad, which will play four Tests and five one-day games.

Pakistan arrive in the country on July 1, after which they play a warm-up match against Leicestershire before the first Test starts at Lord’s on July 13.

Pakistan suffered a crucial blow on Wednesday when Shoaib was ruled out for at least six weeks after scans revealed an ankle fracture sustained last year had not properly healed.

Taufiq Umer, Asim Kamal, Zulqarnain Haider and Rao Iftikhar have been placed on stand-by in case of further injury.

Pakistan squad Inzamam-ul Haq (capt), Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, Shoaib Malik, Salman Butt, Imran Farhat, Kamran Akmal, Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq, Danish Kaneria, Faisal Iqbal, Muhammad Sami, Rana Naved, Mohammad Asif, Umar Gul, Shahid Nazir.

So Rao is in the “stand-by” list and not in the main squad as many guppies wanted

Shahid Nazir is in squad to cover Shoaib Akhtar’s job, while Mohammed Sami might make up for the much needed spin department.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

I came here to post the same news but Captain sahib zayada phurteelay niklay.

Anyway good news is Rao is not selected. And yes I am still happy Sami is selected cuz I know he would be much better than Rao. I’d say the selectors did a good job. :k:

Haven’t seen Nazir bowl before wonder if he is any good?

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

YES! Shahid Nazir in the squad! Excellent! His bowling action is like watching a riverflow. Smooth and nice.

Mohammad Sami should be in the squad, at all costs. But a great pick by the selectors - Shahid Nazir is back!

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

Now that the selectors have picked Nazir; I had a thought in the back of my mind along the lines of having an equal and appropriate distribution of spin and fast-bowlers.

Speaking of which, Umar Gul selected but not Mushtaq?

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

Shahid Nazir was in squad to various recent tours but don't think he was given a chance, lets see if he'll get some assignment this time.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

I am disappointed that mushataq Ahmad has not been selected. :nook:

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

^ Wasim Bari said in TV Interview that Mushtaq and a reserve wicketkeeper were not selected because it could have affected Kaneria and Akmal’s respective performances

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

 So , Pakistan also has it own Kiran More.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

Wasim Bari and his rubbish statements…

If you have a second wicket-keeper in the reserve list (which is always a good thing, since the tour will span for more than 60 days), why not place the much-deserved Mushtaq’s name in the reserve list as well?

And since they haven’t been bothered the least bit in this sense (IFTIKHAR AGAIN?), Kaneria will play the leading role of a specialist spinner, in all three tests?

Umar Gul, of all people, gets picked while Mushtaq gets left-out. Injustice over another injustice.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

yeah LoL. Incidently they both have been good wicketkeepers and clueless while facing media.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

I wonder why people are so obsessed to have Mushtaq in the team. I can bet his performance will not be as good when playing for national team as when playing for county. Why not ask Saqlain to re-join the team?

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

^ Anees jee saqlain's performance at county level is no where near Mushtaq's. So if we follow your logic that mushtaq won't be able to repeat his county performance at national level than Saqlain will be in for a massacre. Plus he has not done anything of note in the last few years, either at national or county level. Mushtaq is the leading spinner on the county circuit today and we should therefore take advantage of that.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

Looking at the series against Sri lanka and Pakistan, we do know that England is very feeble facing spinners, selectors should've accentuate more on it.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

Mushtaq/Azhar were performing brilliantly before Pakistan's last visit to England but when they joined our team their performance wasn't even 50% of their county performances... as per my memory.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

i know Mushy is a good leg break bowler with vast English experience but it's still not viable to name him ahead of or next to Kaneria in the squad. We don't need two leggies in England.

I think Wasim Bari and his selection management team has been doing an outstanding job for the past several years. The results are there for everyone to see. We have had a good influx of young talent and performing seniors have been given the sense of stability.

Except for Shahid Nazir ( I have never seen him bowl in tests), I think everyone fits the puzzle.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

On spinners, we know that spinners will only come into play in the second innings. To employ two full-time would be an exxaggeration. Let's not forget we have Shoaib Malik and Afridi who are better than Monty Panesar on any given day.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

I think Pakistani batsmen will easily handle Monty, I would even go as far as saying that they will unsettle him easily. What's the news on Ashley Giles?

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

Danish is an exceptional spinner but not Wanre or Murli, yet. Shoaib Malik should not be in the Test squad, he can not make the contribution with ball or bat. So far he is a make-shift, it is better to have a specialist bowler or batsmen than him in the squad. Afridi relies on help with his wicket, we can not declare him as a strike bowler or someone who will make the breakthrough when needed.

Asif, Rana, Sami and Razzaq are enough. Umer Gul and Shahid Nazir shouldn't be in the squad or atleast one of them.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

I agree, Pakistani batsmen shouldn't be troubled by England spinners. Most of the problem our batsmen have are self-inflicting. If they play reasonable cricket, England is in pain from the start.

Re: Squad for Pakistan team tour to England

I do agree with your assessment that Pak doesnt need 2 spinner in squad of 16. If injury happens Mushtaq can be called anytime and he is in England. But I think you are under-estimating Monty, may be because He is english spinner. I have seen him bowl and I think he is a very high quality spinner. Definitly better than Shoib Malik. I dont think you have seen Monty's bolwing otherwise I dont think you will make this comment.
