Somalia announces Prophet's (SAW) Birthday as National Holiday

In the wake of the recent news of banning Christmas …

Somalia has arrived at a very good alternative. - Mawlid un- Nabi

And they have made it a national holiday.

What do you think might be the motivations for these recents actions?

Re: Somalia announces Prophet's (SAW) Birthday as National Holiday

What is up with the random business related interjections? You do it often and they have no relevance to the topic at hand. What is the purpose?

Re: Somalia announces Prophet's (SAW) Birthday as National Holiday

Good question.

Re: Somalia announces Prophet's (SAW) Birthday as National Holiday

Then a few countries can learn a thing or two from India. It has retained somewhat of its traditions since times of old Islamic rule. That is what.

Re: Somalia announces Prophet's (SAW) Birthday as National Holiday

Not a national holiday, its a "optional" holiday

Re: Somalia announces Prophet’s (SAW) Birthday as National Holiday

May be in a few years after the effect of the mawlid seeps in the corruption will reduce. What are the stats for countries that have been doing this several years already?

Re: Somalia announces Prophet’s (SAW) Birthday as National Holiday

it’s a holiday across India which means it’s a ‘national’ holiday.

Re: Somalia announces Prophet’s (SAW) Birthday as National Holiday

Not too good, unfortunately.

From another forum… list of countries where the day is celebrated as a holiday:

AFRICAN COUNTRIES: Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Comoros, Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Togo, (In Africa, a total 25 countries out of 54)

MIDDLE EAST: Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestinian National Authority, Syria, United Arab Emirates/UAE, Yemen (11 out of total 14, except Israel, Qatar, Saudi Arabia)

ASIA: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Brunei, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan

OTHER: Fiji, Guyana,

30 of these countries appear in the bottom half of corruption perception index (CPI) while 13 appear in top half. The only country which celebrates it as national holiday and appears in top 50 of the cleanest countries is United Arab Emirates. Conversely, some 20 of the above countries appear in the bottom 50 countries ranked by CPI.

Re: Somalia announces Prophet’s (SAW) Birthday as National Holiday

Specifically, for the topic, the Somalian president is under tremendous pressure because of his Peoples Party style government in Somalia. He is doing everything to divert attention from those issues.

Re: Somalia announces Prophet’s (SAW) Birthday as National Holiday

Thank you although I was talking flippantly … More seriously is there a correlation with GDP that needs to be taken in to consideration and what about politics?

I mean by presenting the CPI to my praise of Somalia - was it intended to suggest something relevant to the discussion at hand? Because I think CPI is not related to the subject matter.

Re: Somalia announces Prophet's (SAW) Birthday as National Holiday

Religion is a tool often used by politicians to keep masses busy with these 'controversies' while they consolidate their power and wealth. I bring it up because you asked what could be the motivations behind such actions by the Somalian president.

I mean, how much love for Rasool (SAW) would Solmalian politicians have? If they followed his teachings even to an extent of 10%, they wouldn't be running one of the most corrupt countries in the world.

How does not working for a day prove your love for your Prophet (SAW)?

About correlations, there are several studies showing a positive correlation between how 'religious' a country is and how much corruption exists in that country. I am not talking about Islam in particular. Philippines, for example, is a highly 'religious' society and also a highly corrupt one. If you like, I can point you to some, but as you said that is not the topic here.

The idea is this... once you are indoctrinated with that idea that everything is "God's Will", then you do not have much motivation to stand up to injustices in the society. Again, this is about 'public display of religiosity' and not true faith that can make humans, humans.

Re: Somalia announces Prophet's (SAW) Birthday as National Holiday

Thank you again. So the motivation for returning to a traditional practice is to detract from the political climate in the upper layers of the ruling stratosphere. I guess that can be a valid theory if there was further evidence thereof.

I have another theory - I feel returning to these practices will help weed out extremism. Now there are counter arguments for sure, but it is a sign of a change of wind direction. Effects will take some time and knowledge and practice has a huge bearing on this. It took 200 years of the Wahabi movement to create its fruit of Daesh, likewise the change coupled with reformed understandings will benefit us in the long run too. This too however may be a valid theory and yes it too needs further evidence thereof.

Re: Somalia announces Prophet's (SAW) Birthday as National Holiday

^ Wahabis are good as long as they fight your Sunnis' war against Shia. Get rid of "Daesh" from yourself first. These sectarian (corrupting Islam) approaches are counter productive as it creates more divides.
