WHY on earth are our film makers so obsessed with Lahore's red light area, and the kotha culture in general? The theme is recurring in every major film made by the Lahore industry....I thought even hookers shunned *mujras *eons ago and are pretty happy sticking to the real thing now?
Honestly, I expected a lot better from Shoaib Mansoor. It seems all they think about in Lahore are kothas *and *tawaifs.
But with shoaib mansoor you know its bound to be full of class! It should be a very thought provoking movie.......and if you hate lahore so much then find a great karachi director that's better then shoman

true... shoaib mansoor is the best director in pakistan. I don't think its fair to classify directors based on which city or ethnic group they belong to as it's totally narrow-minded approach of judging their work.
some people have to bring in karachi vs lahore divide all the time...its about time they moved on.
^^ Wow, speak for yourself -- sounds like you're a fan of kotha films
All things considered, I'll still give this one a watch before I make any more judgments. I just wish our directors understand that there's more to Pakistan than mujras, tawaifs, kothas, axes, water buffalos, taliban and terrorists....
It seems that modern, urbane cinema will remain a pipedream for a while when it comes to Pakistani films

Truth hurts. your language speaks volumes about your low mentality. nobody 's interested in your narrow minded biased comments.

Obviously you're interested enough to respond to them -- next time, please think before typing :) and I think its only fair to say all the kotha genre of cinema originates from Lahore now -- that genre died in bollywood in the 50s or 60s. If you can't see the obvious then I can't help you out.
Will they ever stop making these *kotha-*centric movies?
Calm it guys, watch the movie first and then say whatever. Lahore still has a red light district and bollywood is also obsessed with it - Phooja Bhatt's film with Mona Liza is a prime example.
Shoman is great but don't forget Sabiha Sumar and Mehreen Jabbar. Sabiha Sumar holds the record in Pakistan for winning the Golden Leopard at the Locarno film festival for 'Khamosh Pani'. I doubt anyone has earned a greater film-related accolade (in Pakistan) as of yet.
i have to agree with stalker here.....lollywood movies have long been glorifying prostitutes...as if these women are piety and deserve a status of a sufi...I mean come on, there is nothing glorifying or honorable about being a prostitute...I just hope shoman takes a different stand than most typical lollywood movies I have seen in the past.
^ you know, even if they glorify them, who cares?? have we run out of everything else that can be covered by cinema? why not talk about more interesting, more positive things?
^true that as well. They are plenty of other subjects they could make a movie on...besides this whole red light district area and tawaif issue has been done to death already. Can we make movies that masses could relate to?
Khuda ke liye was a movie every pakistani american could relate to, every music lover could relate to, every girl who faces arranged marriage could relate to
Shoman knows his stuff and he is obviously gonna have an awesome movie with bol
*and I know I say that we don't have any other good directors but that's simply because in the last maybe 50 years the only pakistani film I've seen is khuda ke liye....I saw some classics which were interesting but that's it.....I'm going into my 20s very soon and noone in my generation knows if any other pk directors besides shoman...he is the only one that has proved himself as a director

Samina Peerzada made a very good film called "Inteha". It wasn't a kotha film in the tradition of Majajans, ZilleShahs, the Gujjars and now THIS film from Shoaib Mansoor.....it actually dealt with marital rape and was pretty nicely done. Too bad they never released a decent print on DVD and the movie is thus lost to history and she didn't make any decent film after that.
The only film I can think of besides that one is Syed Noor's only watchable flick "Sargam" that came out in the 90s and that is actually worth your time. He's totally useless now though.
Is sargam that movie in which hadiqa kiani sang with adnan sami? I never saw it but I saw the songs on youtube...I think hk was very young cuz her voice sounds super young lol
I think that was hks last lollywood song she sang and now she's singing for bol:) I can't wait to hear hadiqa and atif song:D

and how can you pass judgements on a film that hasn't even released yet? first watch the film and then comment.
^^ I'm passing a verdict on the subject material, which is an anachronism in today's age. Take cinema forward, please and STOP making these sappy films on terrorism, gujjars, tawaifs etc.
Apparently, a lot of this stuff probably agrees with whatever you have seen in Pakistan. It is however shocking to me :)
It isn't an anachronism as terrorism and prostitution is rife in Pakistan.
To me it seems the whole tawaif thing is just a sub-plot in the film 'Bol'. The cast is huge so I'm guessing the film is based on interlinking lives in the same way 'Crash' and 'Babel' made use of it. Hence you got the kidnapping of a tawaif, involvement of a doctor who does abortions and so on.
