overview
Ticket to Lollywood
Like life is best lived, cinema is best seen king sized. Here are the faces we’ll see on the big screen in 2010.

By Usman Ghafoor

As the year 2009 draws to its close, Instep raises the curtain on the few good men and women who are going to take the big-screen plunge - at a time when Lollywood isn’t exactly considered a wise career move. But these film-firsts have their reasons. They are the kind of stuff cinema is made of: they are great-lookers, they boast the right attitude and, if that is not enough, have the native intelligence to pick and choose the best from the available lot. Some of them are stars already, while others have stars in their eyes. Over to this fresh crop of actors that has the promise to change the face of Lollywood – for the better.

Mahira Khan Askari

Her endearing, girl-next-door looks, a warm smile and a sophisticated demeanour have won alabaster-skinned Mahira Khan a huge fan following, especially among the youth. But this former MTV VJ didn’t know one of her fans was Shoaib Mansoor, her own favourite film maker. Today, she is part of Mansoor’s underproduction movie as one of the main leads. It should be interesting to see her act and, of course, sing songs on the big screen.
Role model: Many, but if I had to name one - Guru Dutt!

The kind of film role(s) I’d be best suited to: Not really sure what roles I’d be best suited for, but I’d like to be able to do diverse ones. InshAllah!

One film role I feel I could perform better: Oh man! I don’t even know if I can perform well yet. But there are so many roles that I look at and think wow - such as the one played by Marion Cotillard in La Vie En Rose. I think she was brilliant!

One actor I am dying to work with: Woody Harrelson

One director I’d give an arm and a leg to work with: There are many I admire - Shoaib Mansoor, Anwer Maqsood, Woody Allen and so many more. Of course, I wish Guru Dutt was alive

One actor I think I’d make the best onscreen pair with, and why? Johnny Depp! Do I need to explain why?!

My best feature, according to me: How can anyone really answer this?!

Humaima Abbasi

For a 21-year-old (her official age!) married Pakistani TV actress to have bagged a big-banner Bollywood film, opposite one of the top five Khans, is a potential headline-grabber. But this isn’t exactly why Humaima Abbasi makes it to our list of film debutants. There is more dope on this petite and pretty girl who is now signed on by our very own cinematic genius, Shoaib Mansoor, for his next, due to be released in June 2010. Trust Humaima not to spill any beans just yet, but we know for a fact that it’s going to be a dream role for her - she plays a tawaif and, incidentally, one of her all-time favourite screen characters is Devdas’s Chandramukhi!

Role model: I admire Madhuri for being extremely beautiful and a complete film heroine. I also love Kajol for being such a natural, and Angelina Jolie for being so gorgeous and sexy
The kind of film role(s) I’d be best suited to: Roles that are dance-based and also have a lot of margin for performance. Also young, bubbly characters

One film role I feel I could perform better: Kareena’s in Jab We Met

One actor I am dying to work with: Amitabh Bachhan. I don’t know if I’d ever get a chance to work with him

One director I’d give an arm and a leg to work with: Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He makes such grand films and his leading ladies look out-of-this-world

One actor I think I’d make the best onscreen pair with, and why? Shahid Kapoor! He’d look my age. Also, Akshay Kumar; he’s very hot! (From among the locals) Shamoon and I share a great chemistry onscreen; we’d be a perfect pair for a romantic flick. Azzfar Rehman’s young appeal and comic timing matches mine, so we’d be a great couple in a comedy. Lastly, I must mention Humayun Saeed; people have loved us together onscreen
My best feature, according to me: My smile, definitely! It gets me big, fat paycheques! (laughs)

Juggan Kazim

If there was something that forced Saeeda Mehrbano to rechristen herself as Jay and consider Lollywood after a Pink Ladoos in North America, it was her passion to try different kinds of cinema. While an offer from Yash Raj camp also fell in her kitty, Juggan (Hence J!) savvily put it aside post-26/11 in favour of local fare. A well-known TV show host and actress, today she is committed to Shaan’s next home production as the leading lady.
Role model: Meryl Streep, Shabana Azmi and Babra Sharif

The kind of film role(s) I’d be best suited to: As an actor one should be able to play any kind of role. That’s my belief

One film role I feel I could perform better: Angelina Jolie’s in Gia
One actor I am dying to work with: Meryl Streep

One director I’d give an arm and a leg to work with: Bilal Lashari. In fact, I’ve worked with him already and simply loved it

One actor I think I’d make the best onscreen pair with, and why? Shaan. He is the king of our film industry. It’s like if you’re in India, you’d want to be paired with Shahrukh Khan
My best feature, according to me: My personality

Nabeel Khan

It took this 24-year-old, light-eyed handsome hunk a couple of years in modeling before he was picked up by Reema for her second directorial venture, Kitni Haseen Hai Zindagi. Though he always wanted to do films, Nabeel was savvy enough not to jump the gun. Kitni… was a project where Reema had an author-backed role and Moammar Rana as her leading man; so, where would he fit in? Nabeel says he sought the advice of a lot of his friends in the industry, till he was game for it. Later, he was so motivated that he even quit his job at a local bank and started preparing for the film assignment. He took dance classes and also worked on his diction and acting skills before he was ready to face the camera. 2010 shall see him romance the queen bee as well as Araida, another newcomer in Lollywood from Kazakhistan. He is especially excited about the the film’s title song which is picturised on Reema and himself.

Role model: Salman Khan and Al Pacino
The kind of film role(s) I’d be best suited to: All kinds. I believe I am quite a versatile performer!

One film role I feel I could perform better: Salman Khan in Wanted

One actor I am dying to work with: Lots of them

One director I’d give an arm and a leg to work with: Sanjay Leela Bhansali

One actress I think I’d make the best onscreen pair with, and why? Sonam Kapoor. She’s stylish and sophisticated

My best feature, according to me: My eyes and my lips

Ali Saleem

After wooing TV audiences on both sides of the border with his ‘Begum’ avatar, Ali Saleem is now tipped to wow his fans in his first big-screen outing - Reema’s Kitni Haseen Hai Zindagi - though it could have been a film opposite Konkana Sen Sharma that Ali came close to signing prior to Mumbai’s 26/11. But he has no regrets. A self-confessed film buff, Ali promises his act in Kitni… is going to be worth a dekho. For starters, he is cleverly pitched opposite the comedian from the other side of the border, Johnny Lever, and our very own Afzal Khan (Rambo). Catch him lipsynch and shake a leg on a brand-new Abrar ul Haq ditty!

Role model: So many actually. To say only one name would be unjustified, because I’ve watched the great works of some of the great film people around the world
The kind of film role(s) I’d be best suited to: This is something I’d like my audiences to decide. I’ve just done my first film. But, obviously, as an actor I’d like to experiment as much as I can

One film role I feel I could perform better: Nathan Lane’s role in Birdcage
One actor I am dying to work with: Sridevi. I’ve been a great fan of hers all my life!
One director I’d give an arm and a leg to work with: Karan Johar, Yash Chopra and a lot of other mainstream film makers

One actress I think I’d make the best onscreen pair with, and why? I was looking forward to working with Konkana Sen Sharma, because she’s a great actress. But the project was shelved

My best feature, according to me: My eyes

Naveed Raza

One of the three winners of this year’s popular reality TV show, Hero Bannay Ki Tarang, Naveed Raza alone has the spunk to declare that he is Mills & Boon material. Decidedly the best bet on the show, this passionate actor found instant takers in Lollywood, chiefly Syed Noor - Tarang’s main judge who is committed to casting the three boys in his next home production. As part of the deal, the boys will get an all-expenses-paid training at Noor’s freshly built performing arts academy in Lahore before they move on to shoot their first scenes in March 2010. Naveed is also due on a short, “international film” (to quote his words), titled The Face of Prophet. “It’s a BBC Asia project,” he says, gushingly.
Role model: Waheed Murad

The kind of film role(s) I’d be best suited to: Light, romantic. Also villainous characters as well as stark tragic roles

One film role I feel I could perform better: Shahrukh Khan in Devdas
One actor I am dying to work with: Kareena Kapoor. From among the locals, it’d be Resham
One director I’d give an arm and a leg to work with: Yash Chopra. Also Syed Noor
One actress I think I’d make the best onscreen pair with, and why? Saadia Khan who’s a model and also a friend (winks)

My best feature, according to me: My eyes and my smile

Shamoon Abbasi

Undoubtedly one of the most stylish - as well as handsome – actors on our television, Shamoon Abbasi is now going to give silver screen a try in Syed Faisal Bokhari’s Bhai Log, where he has an action-laden role. The transition, he says, wasn’t difficult, especially since he has often played such characters on TV. But it would definitely be interesting to watch Shamoon share screen space with stalwarts like Momi Rana, Jawed Sheikh, Nadeem, Babar Ali and Saima and yet leave an impact.

Role model: I admire and learn from a lot of actors. Tom Hanks is a great inspiration, Al Pacino impresses me with his intensity, K K Menon for making acting look so damn effortless. etc

The kind of film role(s) I’d be best suited to: Action packed roles. I believe they have several shades to them

One film role I feel I could perform better: Most Hollywood films have such perfect casting that I cannot imagine anyone else in an actor’s place. But if I must pick one, I’d say Traitor’s Omar (played by Saïd Taghmaoui)

One actor I am dying to work with: Again, lots of them. I’d love to be cast with Amitabh Bachhan

One director I’d give an arm and a leg to work with: Not one but two - Ram Gopal Verma and Mani Ratnam

One actress I think I’d make the best onscreen pair with, and why? Priyanka Chopra. She’s so smart and versatile; she can look convincing opposite a Shahid Kapoor as well as a Sanjay Dutt

My best feature, according to me: My eyes. I think they are quite expressive and help me emote well

Those who missed it

In 2006, Ali Zafar famously gave cinema a miss when he opted out of Shoaib Mansoor’s Khuda Kay Liye, the only movie he had signed and also shot a few reels for. In 2008, he cagily went to Mumbai and completed his first Bollywood film (Ali’s closely guarded secret, rumouredly a spoof on Osama bin Laden’s life and times) that is yet to see the light of the day. But it could well be his silver screen debut. Lollywood, it seems, can wait.

Imran Abbas has long been twittering about a film with Sanjay Leela Bhansali that eventually went to Hritik Roshan(?). Let’s see if his “new project with Kareena Kapoor” will have a different fate. Again, there is no project with him back home.

Re: Shoaib Monsoors secret film

dr shaista also mentioned in one of her shows that shoman is shooting his next film. would be great to know the details.

Re: Shoaib Monsoors secret film

Mahira is an excellent choice.

Re: Shoaib Monsoors secret film

well a few years ago after khuda ke liye was completed he was offered 5 crores by the goverment to make a film on iqbal, i hope this is that film as we need a film on iqbal.

Re: Shoaib Monsoors secret film

lol- juggan and humaima in bollywood films? ummm, okkkkaaayyyy.

i can totally see humayun saeed and likes of bushra ansari, etc being offered films but those two above? yeah, right. itne bure din agaye hain bollywood ke.

Re: Shoaib Monsoors secret film

juggan and humaima are so silver screen, its not even funny.

Under proper direction.

Re: Shoaib Monsoors secret film

bollywood mein kounsay barre kamal ke actors hain? ek do naamon ke ilawa sab kachra bharra hua hai. Pakistani actresses are far prettier and if they work with a good director they can do far better than their indian counterparts.

Re: Shoaib Monsoors secret film

They can but not Humaima and Juggun =) A much better option would be Sanam Chaudhary, Nadia Jamil, Sonia Rehman, etc.. women who actually know what acting is about and are passionate about it. Not the kind who do it only for money and fame.

And I think it's become a habit for Pakistanis to trash anything bollywoodish.. even if all they watch is Indian movies secretly ;-) It's very common. I wonder why every other Pakistani actor/actress is dying to work in India, or feel the need to brag and lie about their non-existent projects with so and so, as evident by these interviews. How funny that despite of all these claims, noone has really showed up except Meera, Humayun Saeed and now that Mona Lisa chick, not that any of them ever saw any success anyway, except Humayun.

juggan did good job in pink ladoos (canadian film)
and btw who is humaima? :konfused:

Re: Shoaib Monsoors secret film

if shoaib mansoor can make iman ali act in 'Khuda ka liyay' then he can definitely do it with juggan and umaima too (i believe its umaima not humaima) we need to have a little faith in our actors as well and not give up on them based on a couple of performances here n there. movies are a whole different medium and under good direction a lot of potential is explored, some faces have a better impact on the silver screen and knowing shoaib mansoor i'm sure he knows how to pick the right faces and potential. juggan was really good in 'pink ladoos', the right script and direction does wonders for an actor.

the magic of bolly movies is in the direction, cinematography and production, apart from a few really talented actors the rest are just eye candy but given time and good direction they do improve, case in point kareena kapoor who is getting much better with time as compared to a few yrs ago.

And does bollywood have the right roles for someone like nadia jamil or sonia rehman? I don't think so. The few remaining good actresses in bolly are having a hard time finding roles in an industry where mini skirts and sleazy item numbers is the trend so I would have no hope for our leading ladies.

Bolly has a low talent threshold anyway, most of our artists stand out in terms of talent e.g. humayun saeed simply because the competition there is amateur.

And yes i feel its a huge embarrassment that every actor in the main article posted is obsessed with being linked to bolly in some way or another.

very true,.

proper actresses like Nadia and Sonya will be completely wasted in Bollywood...

Re: Shoaib Monsoors secret film

^And Sonia and Nadia are getting recognition and roles they deserve in Pakistan? Oh, please.

If Bollywood wants to 'recruit' anyone from Pakistan, I'd rather see them do so with the actresses I noted above. Or the legends such as Anwar Maqsood, Bushra Ansari, Moin Akhtar, etc. These are people who are powerhouses of talent, not some xyz such as Humaima and Juggun whos claim to fame is g-rated modeling, screeching and wooden acting in dramas, and hosting nonsense talk shows. People like that are just here for money and fame, not for the passion of acting. I would put them in the same category as Meera, albeit a bit more civilized, but pretty much the same when it comes to everything else.

You can think Bollywood has no talent or whatever but show me any other film industry as popular as this. Pakistani film industry doesn't even come close. Shahrukh Khan is not the best actor in the world but certainly one of the most popular ones all over the globe. While Bollywood movies may not offer you the best role but it's far, far better than what you get in Pakistani movies (um, dancing around in the rain and around Shaan in every song?), and don't even get me started on the viewership- how many people here have watched Pakistani movies vs. Indian movies?

There's no denying that the Indian film industry puts you on the map globally, at all the prestigious film festivals, and a pretty solid bank balance comes along with the package. Why else is every Pakistani actor/actress so desperate to work there? If people must go across the border and get all of that fame, fortune and recognition, it should be our actors who deserve it truly.. not the wannabe kinds who will humiliate Pakistan. I'd rather see our awesome actors being recognized and paid how they should be, not treated like whatever in Pakistan because the media or the general public doesn't have the guts to promote their own artists. Atif Aslam is a classic example, and so is Meera. The former who is now a worldwide sensation thanks to India, and Meera who despite of the opportunity, fell flat because she has no talent to show and in return, put Pakistanis to shame.

and what kind of projects await the likes of Anwar Maqsood, Moin Akhtar, Bushra Ansari, etc in India that will properly utilize their talents? is Moin Akhtar supposed to stoop to the Johnny Lever level comedy now? Anwar Maqsood, imo, is now washed up. but when he was at his peak (Studio Dhai, etc), do you seriously think his sense of humor would have been a hit in India? I can see the vintage Umar Sharif hitting it big in India but not the Anwar Maqsood from 80s and 90s. same goes for Bushra Ansari.

just because their films make a boatload of money doesn't mean they make good films. more money != good films. movies like Transformers etc make a lot of money but they're not good films. films like Frailty, A Simple Plan, Black Balloon, etc might not be massive commercial hits but they're good films. there's a difference between a commercial hit and a good film.

why do Pak actors/actresses want to go there? obviously because they want to make money and do well for themselves as individuals. which is fantastic. more power to them -whoever they are. if you're going to work for more fame/money, then it doesn't matter if it's Meera, Juggan, Umaima (who is she) or Mona Lisa.

but how does it help Pakistan's film if quality artists like Bushra Ansari, Sonya Rehman, etc go to India?

Re: Shoaib Monsoors secret film

I agree with pareezay...but not with the part where she said Humayun has been sucessful...he was appreciated but not successful because if he was a success then obviously he would have already signed up many more projects..

If you read my post again, you will notice I'm talking about our deserving artists getting the much needed fame, fortune and recognition which sadly, they don't in their own country. And that if India MUST get someone from across the border, it should be someone who can show them what real talent is.. vs. let's say, the dumb twits.

And even if they don't get good roles or whatever, people will still sit up and notice them, like Atif Aslam and Humayun. They will be appreciated regardless. But if we're gonna send weird people, it's going to put Pakistanis to shame once again like Meera's case.
Adnan Siddiqui starred in a movie with Angelina Jolie- how many people know about it in Pakistan? I found out about it on Nadia Khan show, and I was shocked. Why isn't this told by the media? Irfan Khan starred in the same movie, and I remember articles after articles being published about it in Indian newspapers and on websites. Neither of them had an extra ordinary role but you can see the difference in treatment in both countries.

Re: Shoaib Monsoors secret film

^ bollywood is NOT looking for anwer maqsoods or bushra ansaris, you think they will be given the same stature they have in Pakistan? have you seen javed sheikh's roles in bolly movies? tv's giant humayun saeed did a movie with mahesh bhutt last yr in india, did anyone even hear about it? did it get any publicity or recognition in india? we consider him as one of our country's best and over there he is labelled mediocre, its sad. there is absolutely no harm in working in india, but for a superstar of one country to work in a low budget flick as a side or an extra in another country, is very demeaning.

secondly, i think one of the reasons bollywood is on the map is because they are not afraid to experiment. while we are stuck in our cubbyholes, they are always on the lookout for young talent, new ideas/concepts, they are progressive who move ahead with times, they believe in giving the new lot a chance. new faces keep popping up on their scene, they suck at first, give out flops after flops but eventually can be groomed under proper direction.

we on the other hand, are way too judgemental in putting down our artists, if they happen to do one bad project thats it they are labelled a 'humiliation' for life. this is the exact mentality the tv heads and movie heads have, same old network, same old faces, refusing to groom and experiment with the newer lot, new ideas. and then we have the audacity to whine about same old faces on the screen and a non-existant cinema!

1) so, Anwar Maqsood, Moin Akhtar, Bushra Ansari deserve fame, fortune, etc? agreed! they do indeed. they are/were outstanding artists.

but what kind of work would they have to do to earn this fame and fortune?

2) not giving Adnan Siddiqi credit for his work is the problem of the Pak media that is always looking for problems with our artists. and doesn't give them credit for good work they do. Adnan Siddiqi is a fine actor especially when working with a good director and deserves much more acclaim. but if he's not getting it, it's the fault of his PR people (if he has any) and the Pak media which operates on the "ghar ki murghi daal barbar" principle.

btw, this was reported in the Pak media. I knew about it. but yes, clearly the press didn't give him enough credit for it.

3) class Pakistani artists have always been approached to do work in India and they have declined - for good reason. Shehnaz Sheikh was begged to do that film that eventually Zeba Bakhtiar did. Shehnaz declined and she remains a legend. she is still remembered despite not having appeared on TV in at least a decade. people miss her. people remember her. people will always remember her for her class and sophistication. where is Zeba Bakhtiar? what is she now - apart from being a mediocre actress/third class director?

many of our top actors/actresses have been asked to go to India. and the smart, classy ones refused because they knew the quality they wanted they wouldn't find there. the stupid ones like Javed Sheikh (and others in the past) went there and did third class work... though one could say that it wasn't any more third class than their work here.

4) and lastly, I don't get this concept of being humiliated by Meera's work? what is there to be humiliated by? this is what they do in India. what did you expect her to do there? in fact, like the brilliant and stunningly gorgeous Iman Ali said that we should be embarrassed with what she's done in Pakistan because that was far worse.

do you think Bushra Ansari could have done any better in the roles that Meera did? the actor can only work within the confines of the story and the director's vision. if both of them are third class, then not even a legend like Bushra can redeem it. in fact, as a Bushra fan, I'm grateful that she hasn't ruined her reputation as an outstanding artist by working in a third class film just for money and cheap fame.

I agree that pakistani talent needs more exposure. By going to bolly and doing silly roles isnt the way to do it.

As for umaima, i do find her wooden but im sure that over the years she has ability to improve. Kareena & co all started off acting terribly in bolly, it just so happens that they are the fortunate offspring of famous actors who were given chances to improve over the years.

This is where shoaib mansoor comes in...he's giving the likes of umaima a chance. He did wonders with Iman Ali who was recently complemented by the legendary Sabiha Khanum on the sets of an upcoming serial in which she co-stars with Iman.

dude give us more detail about that upcoming serial...what channel will it air on? what's the name of the serial? haven't seen iman on tv for a really long time. it's about time she started working again.
