I'm just waiting for the day when we'll move away from gujjars, tawaifs, zombies, abortion doctors, terrorists etc. to a more vibrant, sane, relatable depiction of urban Pakistani life, which has YET to see itself on 35mm. That day is far, far away from what seems to be happening on the local cinema scene. Morbidity seems to reign supreme in our directors' minds -- but perhaps that's just an effect of the general environment in Pakistan.
And by the way, tawaifs to me are a def anachronism. But then I'm not very familiar with the culture in Lahore and neither am I acquainted with people who watch mujras. I'm guessing that Shoaib Mansoor wouldn't be able to resist the urge of shooting a mujra sequence given the subject of the movie.
^^ Wow, mention Lahore and everyone gets so defensive. Every city has whores, but rarely do they get as much celluloid space as given by the Lahore industry.
Edit: This makes no difference whatseoever -- but the linked article makes no mention of the location. It does mention a Lahore high court's verdict about banning mujras though.
It is indeed Karachi. Kate Orne (photographer and author of article) is doing an album exclusively on Karachi life.
You really need to give up the anti-Lahore posts b/c it's getting really repetitive and boring. I don't care if a filmmaker comes from the wilderness of Balochistan, if they're talented then nothing else should matter.
^^ The battle is all in your head -- you can't blame me if I have issues with cinema coming for a city that SOMEHOW produces cinema which over the years has recycled the same tawaif theme innumerable times -- it's gotten redundant to the point of inducing nausea. Need a break from such films.
As for the article it is about Lahore. SHEED is located at 1158/A Fort Road Nogaza Chowk Inside Taxali Gate Red Light Area, Lahore, Pakistan -- as per their website. It's totally pointless, but I want to set the straight. Karachi too has it's share of prostitutes and the whole red light crap, if that makes you happy.
I'm actually a little apprehensive about watching this film now, and it's scary because Mansoor has actually shot mujras before with much acclaim in his anarkali videos.
it's funny but i've never seen the kind of borqa she's wearing in the video in pakistan...but nevermind...great music, good photography and mahira is looking smashing!
WOw!!!!Shoaib Mansoor's name is synonymous with perfection. He always comes up with innovative ideas and is way ahead of his contemporaries. very impressive indeed!
Lahore looks smashing!!! The whole look is very pakistani. SM is reitertaing the fact that we've our own identity distinct from other countries and we should reflect that in our movies. Bravo!
