I can't understand why Shoaib Mansoor can't direct more urban-flavored upbeat movies, in a Karachi type setting. All his stuff has to be around Lahore which is really kind of a backward and boring place.

Now that's a really harsh and silly thing to say, I hope you were kidding. Lahore is the cultural capital aka The Paris of the Sub-Continent...Shoaib Mansoor is right in setting his films there.

Honestly, I'm no Karachi lover or Lahore basher....but if you look at the kind of productions that come out of Karachi and the stuff that comes out of Lahore, the difference is so obvious. It's been there since the 80s when Karachi serials like Tanhaiyaan and Dhoop Kinaray were awesome whereas Lahore was producing dull dreary stuff like Waris.
Lahore is located right in the middle of agro belt so its like saying the center of creativity in USA should be Milwaukee or Cleveland, where they have all cows and the dairy industry. It's not on. Movies the world over originate from metros on the sea, be that LA, Buenos Aires, Hong Kong or even Bombay. This is my objective viewpoint, I hold no ethnic biases, I just want Pakistani showbiz industry to go forward.

I kind of understood where you were coming from... Karachi did have a reputation for doing more sophisticated stuff... more high brow type of stuff... cream of the crop actors, directors, etc.
but dude, Waris was dull and dreary? come on! it's one of the best plays PTV ever made. Chauhdry Hashmat might be the single greatest Pakistani character ever created. even though Tanhaayian will always be my ultimate favorite. I think Tanhaayian is the closest a play came to perfection. it is almost perfect. and you don't even want to get me started on how much I love Shehnaz.
but Waris was also a magnificent play.... and if you're going to criticize Lahore for something, man Waris is not the play to pick on! you won't be able to win the Lahore vs Karachi argument by dissing Waris.
and heck, I'd say Waris was even better than Dhoop Kinaray. Dhoop Kinaray was a very good play but I've never understood why ppl rate it so highly. I'd rate other Sahira Kazmi plays like Hawwa Ki Beti, Tapish over Dhoop Kinaray... this despite that I adore Marina, Badar Khalil, Sajid Hasan, etc.
^^ I'm glad you were able to see the perspective behind the argument. I just feel that being a port city, Karachi has the right kind of environment relative to the rest of the country for creativity to survive. If only they can get rid of the political mafia culture that prevails there, movie making in that city can go places....
But please, get Shoaib Mansoor out of the agro belt and into some actual city! I'm a city person and I would like to see that portrayed in Pakistani films by someone who has excellent sensibilities like him.
He's Lahori so Karachi's not going to happen. I understand your arguement about Lahore experiencing a downfall but u should try saying it without insulting around 10 million people in one go!!! :p

Im also from karachi and have no words to describe how much I love my city but for me Lahore and even the most rural area of pakistan has almost the same importance.
but somehow I really dont understand your point

we have example of best plays priduced even in quetta's not so much fancy TV station.
I beleive education broadens our vision.

My SIL's cousin is doing a song in this movie. Interesting because he's not a famous musicion and is just starting out. Looks like Shoaib Mansoor is staying on track with casting new people (some who can't act lol) and new musicians.

Hadiqa kiani and atif aslam will be singing a rock song for the movie vj mahira will have hadiqas voice for the song
about few weeks back (3-4 wks) Atif Asalam was live on FM radio here in UAE and he said something like he is ACTING in Shoaib Mansoor’s next movie and singing the songs as well

Shoaib Mansoor should definitely take this movie to film festivals like Cannes and Tribeca so that international distributors can pick it up there!

You spoke my mind. Lahore is more cultural than urban i believe. Karachi is a port city and also much more urban, it's like making an urban type of movie in New Delhi rather than in Mumbai or whatever.
Moving of film-making industry to Lahore just killed Pakistani Cinema.

I like how Shoaib Mansoor makes films based on pakistani culture. Other film-makers need to learn from him.
