Re: Shoaib Maliks comments...(MERGED)
pal, a mashallah isnt the same as segregating people into muslims and others.

Re: Shoaib Maliks comments...(MERGED)
a mashallah isnt that far from "thanks to Allah"... it is actually the arabic version of thanks to Allah. words you say earn Muslims xenophobia.
Re: Shoaib Maliks comments...(MERGED)
if made to turn post-match interviews to sound like a prayer ceremony, very much so. and i'd say irfan's mashallah is also along the same lines.
Re: Shoaib Maliks comments...(MERGED)
would you be happier if they invoked karl marx?
pakistanies have no problem with their representatives thanking God. its the impulse of a lot of Pakistanies to begin with so its fairly representative. and I've seen people of other faiths thanking their respective Gods. If Muslims are the xenophobe flavour of the month, I dont give a ****e.
Re: Shoaib Maliks comments...(MERGED)
c'mon guys Shoaib malik's english is always full of grammatical errors but the only thing you picked was when the guy was emotionally very dejected. You also know that what exactly he meant so stop sensationalizing this issue as if Malik is a leader of a religious cult disguised as Pakistan captain. Even a highly non religious person after accomplishing something will acknowledge people for their prayers. That doesn't make that person a Mullah.

imho, it is distasteful to do so in an event like the world cup, just as it would be to push a marxist agenda. if it were some kinda muslim tournament, sure.

Praisinfg your God for doing something is ok. What is not ok is claiming that you are sole representative of complete community? He could have easily said 'All fan' rather than 'all muslims'.It may have been slip of tongue and that is probably good example. But trying to defend it by giving this crap that what he said was perfectly alright and all pakistanis understood it just pathetic. When you are on that stage your audience is not just average Joe in Pakistan but it is the whole world and you are ambassador of your country.
It just makes him look like someone who cannot think beyond relegion.
Like many others in this forum, lets say that it was slip of tongue and move on.
Re: Shoaib Maliks comments...(MERGED)
i support shoaib malik!
Re: Shoaib Maliks comments...(MERGED)
*queer: * distasteful is pretty subjective, you are free to determine what is tasteful and what isnt, clearly its not something we can debate about.
all this stuff about Indian Muslims and Indian Hindus and Hindus seeing Muslims as traitors etc is what I find ridiculous.
Re: Shoaib Maliks comments...(MERGED)
He meant muslims because its Ramadan, and log rozo mai duA kaRte hain is liye :D

Haha. I never just said that it was perfectly alrite, I and many here have GIVEN the reasons WHY it was perfectly alrite.
When you actually try to address the points I've made (like I addressed your/Some1's points regarding the plight of Indian Muslims and the sneaky looks they get from Indian Hindus as a result of this comment) I'll reply to you.
Talk to me with something more than petulance and I can reply.
Just tell me this, if you expect people to pick their words with the attitude of Hindus towards Muslims in mind, then who is bringing religious politics into cricket?

where are you getting this indian muslims indian hindus from?
yes, it is subjective, which is why i am saying i find it distasteful when people flaunt religion at such events.

go thru the first page, the gripe apparently is that Indian Muslims are victimized by Hindus because Hindus think Muslims support Pakistan and this comment will make life tough for Muslims.
rahi baat distasteful ki.. i dont know if i would do the same. certainly at some points it comes naturally to me to thank God. if people do it for appearances I dont think its tasteful. if they do feel the need to thank God at such points, I dont think its distasteful.
Re: Shoaib Maliks comments...(MERGED)
well thats more stupid than shoaib's comment itself.

Re: Shoaib Maliks comments...(MERGED)
i'd rather not. i dont want to be arguing with someone who isnt here, i have a hard time getting those over here to engage the points I make as it is. if a particular point strikes you as something you can discuss and debate, put it here... and heres the important thing: ADDRESS the replies people make to the issues you yourself raise!
as I said, I find such gripey articles/blogs effiminately petulant, and very, very india-centric.
instead of actually replying to me, you give me a link to some guy's blog. great stuff.
Re: Shoaib Maliks comments...(MERGED)
Why are indians always crying about something, go out enjoy, take a day off, why are people engagins in something that they no nothing of.

please don't make comments that make yourself look...by generalizing...
it was one blog that got hyped up because the match was being watched all over the world and truth be told, seems like majority were a little surprised to hear that from him, including pakistanis (as i was watching match with my buddies and reaction was similiar) and finally this is a discussion forum isnt it?
for example when lets say bush makes a mistake on tv, the whole world goes nuts about it...
Re: Shoaib Maliks comments...(MERGED)
if the issue is religion with cricket, then Irfan Pathan started his interview today with Mashallah. somehow I doubt Indians will criticize that.
eventually jinko xenophobic hona hai, they'll find reasons for it. Pakistanis understood perfectly what he meant, and if Indian Muslims apparently get treated like traitors because of what he said, then there is a deeper rooted problem there that should not be our concern.
It is Indians who are politicizing cricket by contextualizing, and expecting others to contextualize their words in the dynamics of their country.
hey ravage, i agree with your earlier post about it being tough luck for India if Indian Muslims get targetted. I think the other posters are talking bs. In my house in India, my neighbors are muslim, infact we are surrounded by muslims and we are all good friends. Most of India is literate, and they know, but i guess there are some idiots there as well who might take advantage by i doubt it. But i dont think we should look into that too much.
About the post i quoted, why would Indian fans criticize Irfan Pathan for saying Mashallah? Some of the biggest icons in India are muslims. And maybe you need to understand what Malik said (i think it was a mistake). He thanked muslims all over the **world **for their support which is not the same as Irfan Pathan saying Mashallah before his interview. Hope you understand.
