Shoaib Maliks comments...(MERGED)

:rotfl:
That was pretty stupid. I am sure 2 Pathan in our team wouldnot have liked it.

Re: R P Singh - A vastly improved bowler

Somebody should tell Malik that India has more Muslims than Pakistan.

And that Pakistan is not the sole custodian of all Muslims in the world.

I hope it was just a ā€œcommunication problemā€.

Re: R P Singh - A vastly improved bowler

very soon you will be beaten here. Many people donot like it.Also it is not correct either.

I hope it was the communication problem. But what he said really reflects what common man thinks in both India(unfortunately) and Pak that every muslim that follows cricket is Pakistani fan.

Re: R P Singh - A vastly improved bowler

lol it was especially odd for the group that i was watching it with, as there were couple of Indian muslims. Also couple of muslims in Indian cricket team and + SRK was present lol!

Re: R P Singh - A vastly improved bowler

Some1, do not make a big issue out of nothing…..your typical chankiya antics…..while commenting on an issue, it is always worthwhile to keep things in perspective…. Holy month Ramadan is in its full flow and every Muslim, no matter how irreligious he is, tends to start thinking spiritually in this month (call it our emotional immaturity or whatever but this is a fact). If you have 170 million Muslims in your country (which you guys keep talking about all the time), you should be aware of this factor.

Shoaib had just suffered a big blow and he was fully aware how emotionally Pakistanis were praying to win this match (and I am sure Indians were doing the same back home). He felt from bottom of his heart that in this holy month he had let down his fellow countrymen who were praying so hard for the team and hence he ended up making that comment. In his mind he was addressing pakistanis all over the world who were emotionally involved and of course we have 98% of muslims in pakistan. But to accuse him of taking ā€œreligiosity to the next levelā€ is plain idiocy and you know it very well.

And what are you trying to convey by making this political statement:

"And that Pakistan is not the sole custodian of all Muslims in the world"

A totally unwanted statement for no obvious reason.

Re: R P Singh - A vastly improved bowler

PD, I sincerely hope you are right about sentiments of Ramadan being the reason behind what Malik said.

But an average impressionable Hindu watching the match on TV in India will not connect the dots (if I could not myself)...and there are 800 Million of them. They will immediately paint Pakistan as a "radically Muslim society" who even think of an India-Pak match as some kind of a battle between Hindus and Muslims....and most importantly this kind of perception hurts Indian Muslims most.

In other words, these statements provide ready fodder to Hindu fanatics.

Since Shoaib Malik is a sports man and not a Politician, I feel he should refrain from invoking religion if he does not understand its ramifications.

Re: R P Singh - A vastly improved bowler

We can spin it the way we want it to. But the fact is what he said was the reflection of how common man on street thinks. By default most of pakistanis and Indian Hindus think that all Muslims support Pakistan. Obviously that is not the case.
I was in an Iftaar party last weekend here in USA and I saw the same thing. I was with an Indian friend and for no reasons both of us were assumed as Pakistani supporter. Not that I explained to them.It was fun listining to hat they thought.I think one of them was like Anil Khan.

I totally agree with Some1 that these kinda of statements hurts Indian muslims the most.Unfortunately there are a big section of Hindus who will use this statement to their benefit.

Re: R P Singh - A vastly improved bowler

The statement was nothing less than idiotic in multiple levels.

  1. Why the hell does malik think the match has anything to do with religion? Just goes to show what a cancer religioso have created amongst pakis

  2. Why does malik assume he represents and so has lost some muslim cause?

  3. Why would such an immature person be allowed to represent a national team on tv?

Just stoopid

Re: R P Singh - A vastly improved bowler

Totally agree with PD however unfortunately Some1 has a point as well that an average Indian probably may not be able to comprehend what he said and may get the wrong impression.

I am sure it was one of those moments where words just slip out from your mouth without realizing what they mean. I have heard his post match press conference on several occasions in this tournament and he has been having this problem even there as well. However the guy looks genuine and simple hearted. You have to admit that he is making an effort by taking english lessons right after he was handed over the captaincy. How many Pakistani player have done that before? As I said earlier it will take some time but he will get better and better.

Re: R P Singh - A vastly improved bowler

yar give him a break. He was just apologizing to the nation as he knows that alot of people back home wont be happy because Pakistan lost the final against India. Don't you have an idea about the maturity level of an average pakistan cricket fan who are always willing to burn effigies of the players? He knew that alot of people wwere praying for the team during Ramadan and he was just trying to convery his message.

Re: R P Singh - A vastly improved bowler

I was really shocked when malik said those words. Why bring religion to sport. I dont think, the comment really matters to hindus so much to Indian muslims. How does Malik has the right to talk on their behalf.

Re: R P Singh - A vastly improved bowler

That is my concern. BJP supporters get one more point.

Re: R P Singh - A vastly improved bowler

Fk2 - I agree. In fact I'm faulting the bludy religious ppl a lot more than malik for such things. Momenmt something happens first thing that comes to these youngsters mind (assuming malik didn't do that delibrately) is religion!

Everuy facet of pakistan is getting corrupted with this

Shoaib Maliks comments...

What did you make of Malik's comments about Pakistan playing for Muslims?

I think people are making a mountain out of a mole hill. We all knew that he (probably) meant the Pakistani muslims who were fasting and praying for Pakistan all over the world. It was a slip that was caused because he doesn't have a great grasp of English. (Not that his English is terrible)

Especially now there's an article on cricinfo devoted to criticizing Malik.

Re: Shoaib Maliks comments...

yep... I think it was just a slip of tongue - I think he meant to say something to the effect of Pakistanis praying around the world.

Re: Shoaib Maliks comments...

^^ he should apolgize in next interview. kissa khatam.

Re: Shoaib Maliks comments...

Thats is why I say speak in your own language. Let commentators hire a translator. You can express yourself an there will not be any controversy.
It may be genuine slip of tongue but then every one has this same explanation when in touble.

Re: Shoaib Maliks comments...

just a slip of tongue but obviuosly people will make a big deal out of it. He should just apologize and get over it.

Re: Shoaib Maliks comments...

not apologize but clarify and set the record straight.
no need to apologize, he obviously misspoke

Some people always keep salts in their hands and wait for a glimpse of even a minor wound, seeking an opportunity of adding insult to injury.
