Sharjah April 2003

Right before Ind pak match? Ouch!! Atleast I got to see Pakistan win against Namibia and Holland. Kuch to wasool kiya paisa. :stuck_out_tongue:

Shuhada muskara Ya habibi ;) Yes I lived in UAE for 16 years.

So I can confidently assure everyone including the south africans that UAE is one of the safest destination in the world. I also witnessed the gulf war and during that time Iraq had alot of biological and chemical weapons. Even then UAE wasnt at all effected although some ppl took precautionary measures.

I heard Saddam will make a guest apperance at Sharjah for the games?

So basically this will be a handicaped affair of cricketing nations - Battle without the Stars.

Cricinfo - UCBSA calls off the scheduled tour to Sharjah :rotfl: I guess they are also not interested in playing the paki team. I hear they are going to Dhaka to play the Bangali brothers

South Africa pull out of Sharjah trip amid safety fears

*South Africa pull out of Sharjah over Gulf fears *
Reuters - 24 March 2003

South Africa have withdrawn from next month's triangular one-day tournament in Sharjah because of fears for player safety following the outbreak of war in the Gulf region.

South Africa had been scheduled to play in the competition with Pakistan and Sri Lanka from April 1 to 10.

"We value our players and officials and we cannot continue with the tour when there is concern about their safety," Gerald Majola, chief executive of the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA), said in a press statement.

"We received an advisory from the Department of Foreign Affairs informing us not to travel to the Gulf region under the current circumstances prevailing there.

"We are, however, engaged in discussions with the tournament organisers as to possible alternative venues and or dates for the tournament to be held," Majola said

This is a clear case of hypocrisy. SA was threatening to pull out of the England tour if England refused to play in Zimbabwe due to safety fears. Why didn't the South Africans support England's stance then? Maybe because they are big trade partners with Zimbabwe?

As I said before, they should pull the tournament completely. With a savage war going on in the area, this is certainly not the best of time to be enjoying a cricket tournament. But then again, I am sure there are some who will want to put cricket above ravages of war. How far is UAE from Kuwait, anyway?

To be honest, i wouldn't want to be playing cricket so close to Kuwait. With all those scuds fired by Iraq and coalition forces accidentally blowing up wrong targets, who knows, one might be mis-fired at Sharjah Stadium. That would beat all 100 MPH deliveries, I bet.

Here you go, I dont know if this helps much.

Its probably not worth it.

I am not surprised and I agree definitely, tournament shouldn't go on no matter how near is Iraq or Kuwait. Its too late to switch to another venue, and I doubt that it will be replayed.

faisal bhai and umair. UAE is a safest destination. Even in Gulf war UAE was far from getting effected. It was safe back then and its safe now.
It sounds dangerous just because war is in "middle east". Infact I don't really feel secure here in states. Anything can happen. When it comes to security I would rather live in UAE.

** COWARD SOUTH AFRICAN**

Sorry for side-tracking the discussion. Its not so much as a danger of an errant missile landing in Sharjah (though by the kinds of "mistakes" happening in "Coalition" forces, this ain't totally off-base), but more of the "atmosphere" in the muslim countries.

With the possible exception of Kuwaitis, the whole muslim world is deeply anxious about whats happening in Iraq, and in coming days with more images of wounded and dead Iraqi children and women, these sentiments will get stronger and stronger. Its just not the kind of world environment to be hosting a cricket tournament in Sharjah. One should keep the sensibilities of their audience/viewers in mind.

Sri Lankans are probably a different case. They had to deal with so much misery in their own land, plus they probably already have all the shopping lists ready for trip to Dubai.

Hypocrite - double standard for Goras :disgust: . How long you are going to lick their Bums man ? COWARD South Africans.

Sherybaba - I agree UAE is safer than SL, Pakistan and many other Countries.

SB, not only for the security fears but should we be playing anywhere around the world while our innocent brothers and sister are dying in Iraq for a lost cause.

Playing sports is a way of celebration, and would you want to be happy if Pakistan wins while innocent people are getting killed.

Br Umair, Pakistan has never considered "brothers being killed" to abondon games, have we? While Afghanistan was being bombed, I think we were still playing with NZ, Aus and other tournaments.
