SGC's Review- Bridal Shopping in Karachi

ok ladies, i just got back from karachi and here is my shopping breakdown!

  1. you SO don’t need to shop designer to get beautiful clothes. i was so pleased with everything that was in the markets. having said that, there’s also a lot of crap to be found, so use your judgement and good taste and you’ll get a beautiful outfit for under 1 lakh.

  2. jabeens and rim jhim are two of the best stores in the city! they’re owned by the same people and they are amazing. jabeens is on tariq road, across from tariq center, and rim jhim is in clifton. i ordered my clothes for my bro’s mehendi and wedding from jabeen’s, two outfits from my sil’s bari and my sil’s valima outfit from jabeen’s. they are well-made clothes, bargain on the price, and best of all, you get QUALITY for your money. it was so easy shopping there. they’ve promised everything will be ready by April iA but generally i found anywhere you went, a bridal jora required 2-3 months minimum.
jabeen’s and rim jhim are priced upwards of 15000 rupees. their bridals are anywhere from 75000 and up, depending on what you want.

  3. we ordered the groom’s and guy’s sherwanis from Royal Silk Palace on Zamzama. Again, super professional people and all they do is sherwanis so they’re very well-versed and know exactly what to make and how to make it. sherwanis can range from 9000 rupees and up, so you can go as affordable or as expensive as you want. i used this form to take measurements for my brother and hubby for the sherwanis- click the Download Order Form button- Naushemian - A perfect choice for your wedding day - Designer Sherwani, Bridal and Kurta.

  4. groom’s khussa’s were from Junaid Jamshed and were very reasonably priced at 4000 rs. they make them according to US sizes which makes life much easier for those of us shopping from abroad- they’re handmade and lined in velvet. very nice!

  5. chooriyan and imitation jewellery- the best place is tariq center which is full of varying prices and qualities, and also gulf.
there is a silver store in gulf where i bought these chandelier-style, kundan and pearl earrings for 6500 rupees that are just gorgeous. they’re made in silver with gold pani on them and the kundan and pearls are genuine. they have a large variety- its one of the better known stores there- i can’t recall the name now but will let you guys know later.

  6. if you are in the defense area, you don’t even need to go to tariq road for fabrics- gulf has everything you could possibly want, including stores that sell mehendi supplies and boxes for wrapping jaheyz and bari. we bought this gorgeous velvet covered box for chooriyan and my sil’s valima outfit from gulf.

  7. kehkashan is full of the good, the bad, and the ugly lol. you really have to be there in person to see the kind of kaam people are offering and to bargain with them re: pricing. some stores are super pricey, down the lane, you’ll find other stores doing the same work for half the price. i was kind of iffy on it- i think Kehkashan is for people who live in karachi and have the time to run around the karigars and make sure their work is done and/or have someone in karachi willing to do the running around for them once they leave. having said that, they copy anything and everything you can show them and have tons of samples of kaam you can choose from. the main key is to bargain, bargain, bargain. get your material from Gulf as it is better in quality and price than what is available in Kehkashan.
the store Designers in Kehkashan was terrible- the service was bad and the quality of kaam they had to show was super paindu. i was not impressed at all.

  8. we went to see Uroosiyat as well. you need an appointment with them before you go. i was very, very disappointed. their stuff was just not impressive in design and they are super over-priced for what they were offering. i’d give it a miss!

  9. we got my sil’s set from Marjaan on tariq road. they have gorgeous stuff, all of it is very contemporary, and it is beautiful. we also went to Nauratan on tariq road and they had traditional and beautiful stuff, but my God, gold is SO expensive! its currently at 36,000 rupees per tola faint
a traditional kind of set with rubies/emeralds/sapphires is around 2.5 lakh plus. the contemporary stuff is less and can be had for under 2 lakhs.

notes:
the light goes off three times during the day and with the hangama situation in karachi, you really need to be on the ball and factor in another 2 weeks to any orders you place anywhere in the city.

bridal orders will take a minimum of 2-3 months anywhere.

definitely check out rim jhim and jabeen’s for bridals and formals as they have a wide variety and know their stuff.

bargain like mad with every store keeper.

for formals, shop around gulf. there are ten thousand stores there and you will definitely find something beautiful for your bari and/or jaheyz.

for saris, we went to banaras silk center on tariq road in dolmen mall for beautiful banarasi saris.

lots of stores are now having sales! this is a new phenomenon for me as it wasn’t really there when i went to karachi last time.

for semi-formals, there is a whole line of boutiques in the last street in Zamzama, in line with Royal Silk Palace that have beautiful ready-to-wear outfits for around 3000-5000 rupees, which is very well-priced for karachi.

tailors are really expensive so make sure you find a good one before you give them any of your work. a gharara is around 5000-6000 rupees just for the stitching, not including the materials and any kaam you might want; farshi’s cost more. suits can be made for around 300-400 rupees per outfit but thats for something very plain- no beyl or piping at all. once you add in beyl and piping, you are looking at around 600 rupees, and for churidaars with gota or piping, for instance, it can even be around 1500 rupees per outfit.

what’s in fashion right now: loooong shirts, wide legged pants (called “ajaars”), dhaka pajamas (basically, these are ghararas with no gote), and hemlines that are a-symmetrical so they’re higher in the front and then bias cut so they’re longer in the back. it looks extremely classy and very nice with long, straight pants, and super regal if you pair it with a lehenga, gharara, or dhaka pajama. the idea is that if you wear this style of kameez with pants, from the back, it drapes all the way down so you can’t see the pants at all.
front open coat-style kameezes are still very popular, as is anything from Needlework Impressions or Threads & Motifs. those two stores have a particular kind of thread embroidery that is really beautiful and very different from what is normally available.

oh also, just a quick note- we got huge discounts from shopping with my aunt, who is a professional shopper in karachi. she has clients who fly in for a week or two weeks and she takes them around to the best places for their bari or jaheyz requirements (jewellery, clothing, whatever), negotiates on their behalf and gets them the best deals. she’s done this for so long that half the store keepers in karachi know her and want to do business with her.
once all the orders are placed and her clients have flown out of the country, she then follows up with all the karigars, boutiques, tailors, stores, etc. and then picks up the orders and parcels them to wherever her clients request. its a super invaluable service, honestly, and we would have been overwhelmed and completely lost without her guiding us through karachi wedding shopping. so if anyone is heading there or is interested in finding out more, drop me a PM and i’ll send you her info.

thats it! if anyone has any other questions, feel free to ask away and i’ll do my best to help out!

Wow SGC, you are spot on with the info...this should be a sticky..

can you please PM me the info of your aunt...

Re: Bridal Shopping in Karachi - Outfits, Shoes

Very helpful post SGC. I totally agree about Rhim Jhim and Jabeens. They are such good boutiques and reasonably priced. Can you also PM me your aunt's info? Thanks a bunch!

Re: Bridal Shopping in Karachi - Outfits, Shoes

SGC I was waiting for your review!!! This should have a separate thread.
So RimJhim and Jabeens for formals...got it! I've been told that by others as well :-) Justa few questions...
What's a good place for clutches and shoes?
Also, other than gulf, where did you see excellent quality fabrics?
Did you go to see any designer work? How did it compare with RJ and Jabeens?
Were RJ and Jabeens willing to copy things for you or do they have their own designs?
Do you remember any specific places in Zamzama that had awesome stuff (other than the one's you mentioned)?

Somegroovychick, this is very helpful! Would u pls pm details of your aunt?
Thanks,

Re: Bridal Shopping in Karachi - Outfits, Shoes

aah nice

please pm also about your aunty :)

thanks !!

Re: Bridal Shopping in Karachi - Outfits, Shoes

Will PM you guys her info, for sure.

One more thing: Barkha is a really good place for blockprints and they have good tailors too. They can be pricey though, so be sure to ask for a quote before you finalize your order. Generally speaking though, if you have a suit with lining and/or piping and/or any other embellishments, you are looking at the 800-1200 range pretty much anywhere in the city. Karachi has become ridiculously expensive! Barkha also make beautiful machine embroidery- really fine and their blockprints are gorgeous for semi-formal needs. They do not bargain on prices though.

Re: Bridal Shopping in Karachi - Outfits, Shoes

do you have barkhas adress ?

Naqsa, we didn't have a designer budget, so we didn't visit any designers. But as I said, what I saw in the markets was so nice that I didn't feel like we missed out on anything. And another thing, this designer-need is primarily from us folks coming in from abroad. I met ONE person in my entire trip who had her bridal made by Mrs. Kazmi and her valima by Dr. Haroon. I was all over the city too - in Defense and in other neighborhoods so it has very little to do with money, I feel. Most people prefer to get their designs copied from places like Jabeens/Rim Jhim or for formals/semi formals, from Kehkashan. And thats another thing- don't get your bridal from Kehkashan. Once you visit, you'll see what I mean. Its just nt the right venue for something thats going to cost you so much money.

Specific places in Zamzama, not really. I'm sorry, I don't remember names, but if you walk around there, you'll see what you like and what you don't.
I know Threads & Motifs is in the Pie in the Sky lane. And like I said, of all the boutiques I saw, the ones on the lane as Royal Silk Palace had the nicest ones.
Oh, and I found the card for them:
Royal Silk Palace
I-C Zamzama, Commercial Lane 9
Tel: 5824150, 5370793
My hubby's sherwani is raw silk and the entire ensemble including the inner kurta and shalwar was 18,000 rupees. Hubby is also extra tall so they needed more fabric. Pricing mainly depends on the fabric you use, i.e. jamavars will be pricier than plain fabrics, etc. They also have lots of kula/pagri styles and fabrics. And did you know they make kula/pagris out of three piece suit materials? Hahaha I found that hilarious! But the guy was like, once you're done wearing it, just unwrap it and make a suit for the Mrs!

Clutches and shoes we didn't really shop for but you won't have a problem finding them. A lot of the shoe stores like EBH and also the independent ones have clutches too. Oh, there was this little stall in the middle of the Forum Mall that had gorgeous clutches, so definitely check that mall out too.

Gulf has a lot of variety for fabric but you can also check Ashiana for that too.
Oh! I forgot to mention this store on Tariq Road- its called Diana Fashions. They're very good for formals too. And they bargain. They're in the same side of the road as Jabeen's, just further up the street, so definitely visit them too.

And yes, Rim Jhim and Jabeen's have a lot of beautiful original styles of their own, but if you take a magazine, you can show them what you want and they'll copy it for you. Just make sure you pick the kind of kaam you want to get copied from their existing outfits so you have a better sense of what you are getting. Thats how I ordered my outfit for the wedding- I saw a shirt style I loved and I paired that with a lehenga and the kaam from another shirt that I saw, and I gave them my colour swatch so iA it's going to end up looking gorgeous! The mehendi jora I saw hanging there and fell in love with it as-is, so I just ordered it as it was.

Re: Bridal Shopping in Karachi - Outfits, Shoes

This is what I found for Barkha- the lady’s name is Shaheena Zubeiri, if I remember correctly, and actually, I think she made Sahar02’s bridals, if I’m not mistaken.

Oh and we peeped into Zardozi too and BLEH. It was NOT nice.

Also, both these places had gorgeous saris- kaam wali and banarasi. One of them is two or three doors down from Royal Silk Palace and I preferred their stuff over the other place. Again, they know my aunt very well, so if you are interested, go with her so you can get a better price.

Re: Bridal Shopping in Karachi - Outfits, Shoes

ooo sgc i was searching the threads to see if you had posted any reviews on ur trip. and ur pretty spot on, on how things are there. i got my valima outfit from jabeens! they do have a lot of nice things, so does rim jhim.

i liked the designers at kehkashan but they usualky charge more than the other stores theres. and i LOVE naurattan. its got gorgeous stuff. i went to the one thats right across the one from the Forum, im not sure if these two are the same (i think they are) but it had amazing stuff when i went.

Re: SGC's Review- Bridal Shopping in Karachi

I was wondering where you were! Glad you had a great time in Karachi. I love your taste, and if I knew you went, I would have loved to give you some money to buy me an outfit.

A professional shopper eh??? OMG that is my dream job!!!

Re: SGC's Review- Bridal Shopping in Karachi

Thank you for the detailed guide on shopping SGC! I love shopping in Karachi....it's very different to shopping in Attock (Punjab) to say the least!
I agree that there is loads of nice clothes out there, non-designer suits/saris/etc-it just takes a while to find them for the untrained shopper.x

Re: SGC's Review- Bridal Shopping in Karachi

Afshi, next time iA!
:)

Sumo, Naurattan was to die for, no? literally. just gorgeous, gorgeous jewellery and if I ever win the Lotto, i'm going on a shopping spree there. we went to the one on Tariq Rd.

another place i loved which was mad-expensive was Chottani's. their store is in the Forum and they had this amazing over 100 years old antique set- it was meena kari and it was reversible with beautiful, intricate work on both sides. it was SUCH a gorgeous piece, uff. I can't even describe how beautiful this jewellery was. it was 9 lakh for pendant, chain and earrings. the guy said he goes to auctions and estate sales all over the subcontinent to pick up these unique pieces. whattalife, eh?

oh also whats in fashion are these huge bell sleeves. they can look nice with the right outfit, but if you are really petite, you might be overwhelmed, so control the angle of the bell.

Re: SGC's Review- Bridal Shopping in Karachi

I want to go to pakistan just to shop. It doenst have to be for myself...I'm itching for SIL and BIL to get married so I can shop shop shop! lol.

Ditto!!! Was thinking the same thing! I mashallah have 1 BIL however he doesn't want to get married for at least 3 years and my SILs (2 of them) and much younger so no hope there either!

Re: SGC's Review- Bridal Shopping in Karachi

yep naurattan is def a place not to be missed. i loved a lot of things at chottanis. one that i liked was similar to the one u described it was pink and green meena with kundan in it, was amazing but yeh theire prices are way too high and just from my speaking to the sales associate there for a few min, it just seemed like i didnt wanna trust them with jewelry but they do have nice things. im glad u had a good time! im going soon too iA :)

Re: SGC's Review- Bridal Shopping in Karachi
