Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

Actually there is one question that comes to mind if Scotland becomes Independent, what will happen to the Duke of Edinburgh i.e. "Mr Queen Elizabeth" will his Title take him to Scotland, or will the Queen give him a new Title?

Does anyone know?

I vote for calling him Duke of Whales! :) just like his son is called the Prince of Wales!

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

I never thought Margret Thatcher could be responsible for Scotland becoming Independent:

If Scotland votes for independence next week, it is the British establishment — and the establishment alone — that is to blame. The yes surge is not being driven by blood-and-soil nationalism, by dewy-eyed Celtic nostalgia or the resurrection of a Braveheart spirit.
It is a defiant protest at a bankrupt order built by Margaret Thatcher and then preserved and entrenched by New Labour. David Cameron’s Conservatives will bear most responsibility for the break-up of the country, but the last government and a hollowed-out Scottish Labour party cannot escape the blame.
Most Brits voted against Thatcherism, but the Scots — like the northern English — voted more passionately against, and yet suffered some of the worst consequences.

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

Salmond plans on leaving the Royal Family with all their existing Scottish titles plus restoring the separate titles of the Kingdom of Scotland.

Th other, lesser possibility, is to undo the "Glorious Revolution" of 1688 when the Scottish-descended and Catholic House of Stuart was overthrown as Kings of England by a rebellion which imported a Protestant Prince from Holland to be the new King. However, the current inheritor of the Stuart claim to the British Throne is the German Duke of Bavaria, who states that he currently has no plans to try and take over any of Queen Elizabeth's titles....

Looks like separatists have an edge at the moment.

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

Any survey for Pakistan?

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

It will be interesting to see. I was reading an article about how the Chinese are keening observing this referendum, it may cause a ripple effect in western provinces of Xinjiang and Tibet.

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

Hong Kongers were not treated the same as the Scots and all of us Hindustanis or the American Colonies!

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

The whole of Scotland (and Britain in general) is energized and engaged with politics after such a long time! It is a huge change, and it is an absolutely thrilling and an inspiring change, similarly to what is currently happening in Pakistan. It's wonderful to see people standing up to parasitic status quo and challenging the system to demand greater change. No matter what the outcome will be, full credit to the Scots for starting the debate and turning it into a much needed movement for more accountable and representative democracy, for the people and by the people.

Political apathy in this country was touching new lows, but now, it feels like the whole nation has awaken to re-write the consensus on democracy and equality. It's a proud moment indeed for people who genuinely care about social and political change that comes through empowerment of people at the grassroot level.

I genuinely hope and believe that success of Scottish referendum will give birth to many progressive and ideas based movement all across the UK and in Europe. After all, rights are tirelessly fought for, they're never handed over on a platter!

All the best to Scotland. I hope the Scots seize the moment!

Next step: End of Monarchy and Parliament for England!

^ lol, dream on.....

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

Pakistanis shouldn't be excited about Scotland breaking away from the UK, the same could happen to Pakistan......

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

Good luck to Scotland. Down with the monarchy! End tyranny! :D

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

The independence of Scotland will mark a historic triumph of (real) democracy. A centuries old, deeply entwined Union will come to a peaceful end on the basis of people's vote, without a single drop of blood or any hint of potentially awaiting civil war. This chapter will simply add another feather in the cap of Western civilization. It might very well help if pseudo-democracies where a mere suggestion to create more province for better administration purposes and equal distribution of resources is akin to 'breaking the country'. Perhaps it's time that dynastic politicians stop treating provinces as their daddy's private estate and let people decide their own destiny.

I'm really interested to find out how this movement is being received in Spain, especially in Catalonia.

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

Catalonia is now demanding a similar referendum. I think that this will push Spain into actively blocking Scotland's membership into the EU since they will want to prove that separatism cannot be successful.

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

Spain made it clear from outset that they won't support Scotland's EU membership. But it'll be interesting to see how the independence movement in Catalonia is picking up pace and character. The independence of Scotland will certainly have a knock on effect on European social and political structure in one way or another. It'll reaffirm the importance of politics of referendum as true and ultimate democratic solution to end the stalemate situations created by politicians at the expense of suppressing and distorting public opinion.

At this point, Yes campaign doesn't care about global opinion. Their goal is to win the Yes vote for now, and then secure the best possible deal.

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

So do you support that for separatists in Pakistan too?

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

I generally support referendum as the last resort to break political deadlocks purposely created by politicians. Or when politicians cannot decide and genuinely want the public to make the decision, i.e, EU membership referendum.

As with Pakistan, the separatist movement or sentiments exist for a reason(s). It would help if Pakistan start addressing the root cause now and do everything possible to reclaim the public's approval, support, and trust. Unfortunately, the Westminster village was too late to realise this.

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

depends if the Votes are rigged or not...........:D

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

According to this article,

“About 97 percent of eligible Scots had registered to vote… [and] [m]ore than 4.2 million people are registered to vote in the country of 5.3 million people.”

If all or most of these voters did indeed cast their ballots, that’s a lot of people! So now I’m really wondering what the outcome of the referendum will be.

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

Reading all the recent analysis on what the outcome will be, seems 53% of the Ladies vote is "No" and 14% of all the voters were still undecided til the last hour!

we are not going to know how this will end up polls or no polls.

The big question is will Scottish Pride win out over Scottish Frugality!

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

NO winning by a big margin...53 to 47...
