Gosh these Londoners, good for nothing.

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

Scots, independence is independence, dont trade it for some monetary benefits... ;)

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

Can’t believe I’m agreeing with David Cameron, but Alex Salmond is indeed a man without a plan.

It would be nice if they can just have their referendum now, before the ‘yes’ campaign runs out of steam. I personally don’t see majority of Scots voting yes, but it may very well be a closer margin than what Westminster is expecting. Nationalists may have their fifteen minutes of fame and go back to their huts, but it’s a pity that no one will stand up and ask for serious movement to reverse the damages Northern England and Central Scotland had faced during Thatcher years. The toxic legacy of Iron Lady’s odious rule is, in many ways, the root cause of the problem.

Whatever happens, rest assured, it would be a totally bloodless and largely civilised event, and why I do feel most the spectators might end up feeling a bit disappointed and bored.

Keeping with the anti Imperialism spirit of the OP, it is reported that next year when Britain pulls out of Afghanistan, will be the first time in 100 years that Britain would not be at war with anybody. But then again, since proxy wars are the real battles of our time, it may be that the saying “the sun never sets, the blood never dried , on the British Empire” still remain all true and valid.

scottish spending is pretty high too, and they’d struggle with loans. spain all over again. westminster is not in favour of it so they won’t be too thrilled if it comes to bailing them out.

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

In the run up to the referendum on Scottish independence opinions on the likely state of a post-UK Scottish economy are varied. Some commentators believe that a current account surplus would accrue to Scotland (including oil and gas revenues).[SUP][71]](Economy of Scotland - Wikipedia)[/SUP] In response, a spokesman for finance secretary John Swinney referred to “the UK’s deteriorating growth outlook" and noted that Scotland was the only area of the UK outside London to record output growth between 2007 and 2010 and that "among the 12 nations and regions of the UK, Scotland is the third most prosperous in terms of output per head – behind only London and the South East of England.”[SUP][72]](Economy of Scotland - Wikipedia)[/SUP]
Scotland has 8.4% of the UK population, 32% of the land mass and generates 9.9% (£56.9bn) of UK tax revenues, and receives 9.3% (£64.5bn) of UK spending back from Westminster.[SUP][73]](Economy of Scotland - Wikipedia)[/SUP] In 2011-2012, this amounted to a budget deficit of 2.3% of GDP, lower than the UK’s overall budget deficit for the same period of 6.0% of GDP.[SUP][73]](Economy of Scotland - Wikipedia)[/SUP]
The Scottish unemployment rate stands at 7.3% as of April 2013, which is below the UK figure of 7.9%. Scotland’s youth unemployment rate is also lower, standing at 16.1% compared to 20.6% for the rest of the UK.***From the above report seems Scottland will be better off without the free spending English!

Just sale of Scott Towels alone to the English because of indigestion with runs:) after the Division should make the Frugal Scotts Rich!

And what is with the wink, Ali saab. Scarier than a succession.

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

UK is a big proponent of democracy and freedom in the world, I think that should apply on Scotland too. Why double standards? They are threatening scots with financial consequences, and even yes vote won't mean anything.

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

These finacial consequences are reality, not a 'threat'.

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

Maybe Pakistan and India should follow the example and allow referendum for the people in their countries demanding independence.

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

Although, 90% of the UKs oil wealth lies within Scottish territory that doesn't necessarily mean Scotland will keep 90% of revenues. International law dictates that it would have to be an agreement between both countries to discuss how revenue is split. And the UK is in the driving seat and I can see Westminster demanding a far better deal than they otherwise would be entitled to.

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

^ Why is UK in the drivers seat, honourable CEO, sir?

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

They are following the democratic norms and allowing a referendum. There is no army action in Scotland and people are not disappearing never to be seen again. As for currency the £ belongs to UK and all they are saying to Scotland is to have their own currency if you are going to go independent, which is fair.

:rotfl: have you seen the degree of violence over a relatively inconsequential division of andhra pradesh? we wont be ready until people are educated and know how to react without rioting and killing.

re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence

Something to aspire to perhaps.
