re: Scots voted 55 per cent to 45 per cent against independence
Right now:
‘‘The annual poll, the most authoritative of its kind, run by the independent Scottish Centre for Social Research, found that most voters are in favour of greater devolution for Scotland while remaining in the UK. To the question “Do you think Scotland should be an independent country?”, 30% responded yes and 54% no. However, a separate question found that 34% of voters had still not made a final decision.’’
The fact that England has now refused to provide or bankroll any Scot banks in the event of a disaster and the latter’s hopes of using the Pound i.e. currency union has been rejected I’d be surprised if they separated. There are still around a big% of votes that need to be swung in favor of Scotland being another country, I can’t see it happening. Though then again I wouldn’t be surprised if it did. Salmond is very slick.
Scotland has a different identity, no denying that and has its own history. Interesting whatever happens!
An informal online poll by a Hong Kong newspaper inspired by a recent referendum in the Falkland Islands shows that 92 percent of readers who voted think Hong Kongers would prefer a return to British rule.
The poll on the English-language South China Morning Post’s website was posted after residents of the Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic, voted 99.8 percent to remain under the United Kingdom rather than be handed over to Argentina…

Add to the fact that RBS, HBOS, Virgin, Tesco and others big banks that are headquartered in Edinburgh will pull out and move south. Overall theres gonna be a net loss of jobs

All the North Sea Oil would now belong to Scottland, what ever is left anyways, but there is always more where it came from and Bankers Like Oil!
But going by History as depicted in Brave Heart, The Brits will Bribe em again, actually that is exactly what is happening now **Monetary Coercion!
OK Scotts you walk with Empty Pockets, Plus we will hold the Tattoo in Bradford :)
As a Scot I'm sitting very much on the fence. Another thing to consider is how high an interest rate Scotland would be charged when borrowing money. Cuz they would be a new state they would have zero credit history. On the flip side is the obvious, oil revenues would stay in Scotland, and scots contribute more in taxes per head of population than any other region of the UK.

osborne and salmond heh. i mean we have similar economies so it’d make sense to have that union. snp also believe they could be as successful as the nordic countries economically. the problem though, in terms of keeping the sterling.. if scotland were to end up in trouble with unpredictable oil price drop.. we would be expected to help out. wouldn’t be favourable considering the some 60 billion spent on bailing out scottish banks. the eu won’t accept scotland as a country either so whoopsidoo. i doubt they will get independence.
let’s blame labour, they thought if they gave a little bit of power to scotland, they’d be happy and remain our b!tches. now they want more and more and more. should’ve kept scotland on a shorter leash, i say. and while we’re at it, fix up their accent too. :halo:
i’m just joking if anyone’s a scottish nationalist here. love you guys for the shortbread you’ve given us.

Confused about why most think Scotland cannot survive on its own economically. If I am not mistaken, the rest of UK - their main strength is the financial sector. OK. Astrazeneca Glaxo Smithkline jump out in Big Pharmacy. BP oil. Unilever in consumer staples.
From whatis listed here, the funny accented Scottish (Scott's?) have oil. World still runs on oil. So what if there is some price volatility?
Interest rates probably are a function of ability to pay down debt. If country has assets this shouldn't be an issue. Likewise currency.
