The fact of the matter is being no. 32 in world ranking isn't something special, specially from India which has thousands of young upcoming tennis talents, and already consist of Bhupati & Paes.

As far as her association with Islam goes, that pretty much went down the drain after she made the remarks about sex before marriage.

How come talking about the plight and sufferings of Muslim women becomes a mockery of Islam or Pakistan?
Could Sania achieve such heights if born in an Islamic State? Are you sure if Muslim women are given enough freedom to express themselves?

Off course it is not Sania’ achievements in sport but the Fatwas issued by your some proprietors of religion brought her into the religious controversy.

The initial post is about Sania receiving a prestigious award for her contribution to tennis. I believe it's better suited here than in Religion forum. This particular news article doesn't seem to be having anything to do with any sort of religious verdicts or anything specifically to do with religion. Therefore, I don't see why it should remain in Religion forum.

Feel free to discuss her achievements and worthiness for receiving the award here.

anjjan, do you have any thing better to do than try to tell us muslims what we need to do. Why not start your preaching at home and tell the hindus to stop selling their daughters for $2, get a grass root campaign to prevent women from AIDS....Do I need to go on or do you get the picture yet?
Like I said before, and it is very hard to get it through your thick skull, I dont care if she plays naked...as long as she does not proclaim to be the messiah or some one who is helping the cause of mulsim women. Just shut your mouth and play tennis...if we need to get an opinion regarding a muslim woman, we will ask one.

How is Sania a role model? In several ways -

• focus and hardwork to raise her tennis to top 100 player level
• producing high seed level performance in serious visibility tournaments
• when the fatwarts attacked, keeping her cool and responding with humility of a true professional

If you don't like don't go watch her playing.

Only perverts will view her wearing appropriate comfortable clothing that she feels comfortable in as wanton exhibition.

The same fatwarts are the same perverts that will watch Kornikova on widescreen in slow mo.

Serioulsy i don't think you care about what she wears and what she is. The reason is she doesn't belong to your religion and your religion is not islam. Simple example would be a father and a daughter relationship. If sania was your daughter i am sure you would not speak like what you spoke about here.

And talking about comfortable clothes, don't you think she'd be more comfortable without anything on?

reading through this thread, it is particularly disappointing to see people who otherwise seem to be intelligent, resort to hypocritical arguements when it comes to girls, India and religion.

• People who shed crocodile tears about fate of Muslims in India suddenly resort to they are not good Muslims the moment the Indian Muslims achieve something great. Sania is just the latest example.

• People who cried when the Taleban disallowed the Pak team wearing shorts for soccer are now themselves very concerned that an Indian player is wearing shorts

• Peope who atleast occasionally pay lipservice to the ascent of women in our shared patriarchal society, somehow wonder what's so great about Ms.Sania ranking 32 when Mr.Paes and Mr.Bhupathi had been there before

Nobody starts of playing tennis saying "I want to play tennis because I want to be a role model". They play circuit tennis to win and accomplish. That's what Sania has done. That achievement has inspired thousands of girls in India to take their tennis seriously as something worth pursuing with a future. Inspiration is not limited by religious persuasion.

If instead of resorting to such hypocrisy, encouraging youngsters to strive for similar greatness will be a good first step in regaining lost credibility
