She might be following Islam as much as she ‘can’ but that doesn’t mean she is any authority on Islam.

They cant do zilch about her or anyone wearing minis thats a fact so why the headache. Lets stick to her achievement in sports instead and not involve religion.

MM-kay...people want to keep Islam out of it...then STOP putting forward the view that her wearing the god-damn mini is a-okay or even laudable. If you put forward such a view (and yeah, her doing so in public pretty much does that - thus requiring her to somehow distance herself from it), then expect the backlash.
Now, keeping her dress out of it...why is she getting this award? Is she in fact the best athlete in India? Or is it because she's making progress (albeit only top-100 progress) in a white man's sport? Cause I don't see African-Americans making a big hoopla over the few homeboys in Hockey...and those guys are kinda good...
Is being an average pro-athlete cause for celebration? The assumption here is that there are other Indian athletes who actually excel in their sport...

its the muslims who fatwa'd against her dress that are responsible for her getting so much attention. If you show your weakness to an enemy (general statement), then why shouldnt the enemy use it against u?
and her putting forth her views on islam is only because she is being targeted. Again if threads like this were not opened up, so much media attention wasnt given to her....most girls (me included) wouldnt even know who she is and according to u guys, wouldnt be looking up to her as a model....
now if u open a thread saying its wrong to wear a skirt while playing tennis be prepared to hear other voice their opinions on what they think is right.
if u treat her view as authority and flame it even more..people stand up and take notice. it shows insecurity on your part about the whole issue of your daughters/sisters not having not good enuf imaan so as to be influenced by sania mirzas ideas.

How is it a weakness? In fact, doing something that clearly contravenes societal norms and staying mum about it is the wrong thing to do. That is true weakness as it marginalizes your influence.
imho, causally speaking, she started it...I mean, it really doesn't take a rocket scientist (or a tennis player) to realize her particular mode of dress would be looked down upon...even vilified...by segments of her society. Again, it's not like she had her picture taken in an otherwise private gathering.
If she intended to be a rebel or not only she knows...by her own statements invoking the "woe is me, can't do nothing about it"...she does seem to care what society thinks. Smart girl.

Assumption being females are silent on the issue, or that no female agrees with the mullahs? I may be going out on a limb, but I would say that statistically, the Mullahs are probably an accurate reflection of attitudes towards her dress...across sexes...a public criticism is required to send out the message that "we don't condone this...".
Double standards with respect to Indian actors? You bet. But hey, being half in-the-right is better than being totally in-the-wrong. Double standards can be addressed whenever they get backbone. Better be sooner than later, otherwise the results will completely backfire...but that's another story.

again my point was that you are again giving the world a reason to boo muslims by giving the case way too much attention. Its not like pakistanis are "doodh ke dhullay" or other muslim models/actresses do not wear revealing dresses....not to mention movie actresses... In this case the reason to me seems more like she is a sportsperson which is traditionally a male dominated area....

Dress code, being a restriction on possible modes of dress, typically are enforced with respect to social norms. Religion heavily influences these.

I don't think it's anything new. The Indian media chose to make a hoopla out of this. Needless to say, the world can go screw itself when it comes to issues of faith regarding Muslims. That's exactly their attitude towards us. I don't hear anyone saying "gee...maybe we should dump the mini...we look bad to Muslims".
The bottom line is, Muslims will be boo'd untill we drop our value system and way of life. Can't pay too much attention to that. It's not important.

They do, and they certainly do get an earful...thing is, once a backlash is evident these type are the first to throw on a Hijab/topee and fall in line.

I dont' think the game works that way... it's a bit different with individuals committing minor infractions...if she recants, then she vindicates their point of view. If she says "screw you" and walks off, then she's pretty much written off as a sell-out who turned her back on the community. That's enough to eliminate any kind of influence they imagine her to have. Mission accomplished either way, but in either case it requires her to react on their cue.
