Re: Role of women in world’s major religions and why?
Running after contexts is a defeated mentality. They have nothing, nothing at all, to show in practical.
Iron does not become gold if you repeat thousands of times that by the grace of God it is gold.
‘Can any one count at least fourteen Muslim women out of last fourteen centuries who achieved some goals in public life without any opposition from the religious sector?’
Re: Role of women in world's major religions and why?
I think hinduism really took the lead in oppressing women. Burning women with dead husband, raping shudra women being allowed, no widow could be married etc. are just a few examples. Before Islam newborn girls were buried alive as it was considered shameful to have a girl borne in a family (admittedly not a religious act as far as I know).
Muslims brought new idea of women being considered as honorable figures in the society. This was perhaps one of the greatest contribution from muslims who came into indian subcontinent. It was an enlightening experience for the people in this area to see such a great respect for much oppressed women.
Re: Role of women in world’s major religions and why?
I can agree to all kind of allegations against Hindus, only if he could tell us…
‘Can any one count at least fourteen Muslim women out of last fourteen centuries who achieved some goals in public life without any opposition from the religious sector?’
Re: Role of women in world's major religions and why?
It is always 'what should ideally happen - in theory- according to my religion' vs 'what is happening in your religion' isn't it? My theory vs your practice....never my theory vs your theory or my practice vs your practice....
Sati, dowry, even casteism are social constructs, not religious ones.
Back to topic. Hinduism is essentially monotheistic worship of a formless god, but is probably one of the few, which has godessess. At one level, the female god - Shakthi, is equal to the male; neither can exist without the other. At another level, she is superior to the male gods - a common portrait is of Shakthi standing over a prostrate Shiva.
In ancient Indian society, anybody who is not your wife or sister is a mother. The terms for such relationships in many Indian languages have their root in the word for 'mother'. Heck, only the cow is worshipped; rarely the bull.
In practice, as in ALL other societies, women have had the wrong end of the stick
Re: Role of women in world's major religions and why?
With respect:
I mentioned earlier that my idea of this thread is to see what strict religious teachings tell us about role of women and NOT what societies think of their role.
We unfortunately see commonly that hindus keep denying their own RELIGIOUS teachings when get confronted and they try to make it more of the social values.
We do at times have this apologetic behaviour from every follower of any religion, but perhaps it is much more common in hindus and most common excuse they have is that they never attented religious school or were not aware of women's degraded role or simply, hinduism has many many different versions and I personally do not agree with it!
I can give many examples from hiduism per se that women in this RELIGION has not so good status as it is claimed above.
When God is one then it must remain one as many other religions state. If we say there is female God then it naturally means there are more than one God. Now how could that be considered essentially monotheistic...beats me.
Calling a cow as God itself is debatable (even for some 'hindus') let alone using this example for proving that women have high status in this religion.
It only proves that a cow has respect but not a woman!!
I agree with the last sentence above. All major SOCIETIES have exploted women. It is a male dominant world...perhaps it has some logic and reasong though which is not the topic here.
Re: Role of women in world’s major religions and why?
I repeat, I can accept all allegations against Hindu only if the people of the best religion can confirm……
‘Can any one count at least fourteen Muslim women out of last fourteen centuries who achieved some goals in public life without any opposition from the religious sector?’
(Ps, and I was under impression that the question was very simple.)
Is not Islam a complete ‘male dominating’ religion.
Re: Role of women in world’s major religions and why?
What does this question try to prove? Male dominance in any sense?
The answer is no.
There are areas where women have dominance and there are other sections of human life where male dominate.
Hinduism and other major religions (besides Islam) definitely gave an inferior role to women. Islam brought new thought process to uplift the role of women and gave them respect, dignity and equality (not ‘similarity’ just to remind you) in the society.
Re: Role of women in world’s major religions and why?
Well, a great challenge and no result……
‘Can any one count at least fourteen Muslim women out of last fourteen centuries who achieved some goals in public life without any opposition from the religious sector?’
Equality is great phenomenon…can a woman have a second or third husband for the same reason given to man for marrying thrice and more. Or can a woman beat her man…or can she satisfy herself with what she has under her right hand’ possession?
Why some veil is not created for man?
Re: Role of women in world’s major religions and why?
As usual ignored!
Can you say the same thing for hinduism or any religion???
Can a hindu woman marry more than one man? She would rather get company in burning fire with other woman if her husband dies!!!
Can a hindu woman beat her husband?
Let me know if a woman can and is allowed to do so in any other religion.
The point is that Islam is a NATURAL and FACTUAL religion. While few things in it may be great for ‘oppurtunistic critical person’ such as yourself, the very same things may be explained by Islam very natural way.
On the other hand, many things we find unnatural and even dispicable have been a part in hinduism such as Satti or role of ‘GOPI’ in hinduism. (Don’t even try to say its not in hinduism..we know its its part of the hindu religion and has been for thousands of years)
‘Veil’ by itself is not Islamic and I mentioned we are talking about RELIGION.
I think I must post information from the links to answer these silly questions…
Re: Role of women in world's major religions and why?
Actually I think muslims upholding gender differences are confused about the term "equality" as used by feminists. No feminist means we're exactly alike.
Re: Role of women in world’s major religions and why?
Hindu religion is nowhere stubborn against thought process.
Sati……totally aborted and is not supported by any quarter in India. Whereas death by stoning is still executed and supported by the followers of the best religion.
In India a Hindu can not have more than one wife at a time as per law. No one takes shelter of outdated religious dogmas to exploit women.
(This law is surpassed by Muslims in India.)
A Hindu cannot just throw away his wife….he has to go thru a proper court process for a divorce….conditions are same for a woman.
Now tell me if a Woman can have the same fair life under ‘The NATURAL and FACTUAL religion, Islam’.
I repeat Hindu religion is nowhere stubborn against thought process…can any one say the same for Islam?
‘Veil’ by itself is not Islamic and I mentioned we are talking about RELIGION….asking about the ‘veil’ is silly…..but keeping your women in burqa all the time is not silly. Good logic!
Again I confirm that I am ready to accept all allegations against Hindus…..
‘Can any one count at least fourteen Muslim women out of last fourteen centuries who achieved some goals in public life without any opposition from the religious sector?’
Is this question so difficult?
And for your information ‘a Hindu cannot beat his wife. Religion will not protect him’.
