No idea. Women were actually degraded in all societies throughout centuries.
I can only tell you which societies are not stubborn against the idea of freedom and equality for women (in our age).

I believe he is talking about religion, and not societies. Societies do change from time to time, however, religious priniciples do not.

I think we have discussed to some extent about role of women in one or two religions.
My query is to sort of finding contrast or similarities in different 'religious' teachings among major religions in the world and why. So why part is also important in the question.
Like Ma Mooli said I wanted it to be a religious discussion and not on societies. There is significant overlap of social taboos over religion everywhere and I personally think that when we see women 'free' and 'opinionated' 'independent' having 'equal' 'rights' its not because of the religion rather societies making their decision against their religions.

I believe that Islam directly allows for a woman to go out and work alongside man in intellectual pursuits.

Well can only comment on islam and women have great role in islam despite the western propoganda where they will highlight certan stories and slander entire muslims based on these stories. I would say women are greatly underestimated in islam and when non muslims investigate islam they would be surprised. Women and mans have different roles in life but does'nt mean one is superior to the other.

I think in all religions women are considered equal. In those times, men go out and work or fight and women stay home and feed the kids. So, mostly you'll see that men are told to respect their wife and kids and women to be good housewives. Altough in all of the three major religions, women are not allowed to be the head of a particular place of worship.

Whichever religion is a hindrance in progress and open thinking women are the first target to suffer.
Whatever excuses, explanations they offer, or glorify their religion they cannot run away from the reality.
Yes, I agree with AK that woman is greatly underestimated in Islam in a covered Burqa.

i did’nt mean islam underestimates them i am sayin with the western propoganda and behaviour of certain people underestimates them,you should take all my comments into context not just one sentance. Islam gives the women a great role in islam which many people don’t realise.

(BTW, personnaly I am all for loose clothings (not revealing the shapes and curves or covered by a nice robe or long coat) and also for the face to be open but without overwhelming and alluring makeup. Besides Burqa in its current shape or form is not really proscribed in Islam as far as I know)
