Rivers and their impact on culture

Re: Rivers and their impact on culture

From the tales of Sohni Mehwal and Heer Ranjha

Re: Rivers and their impact on culture

Oh I see

Ghara

Re: Rivers and their impact on culture

But that GhaRa was highly unromantic.

To aap sorahi ka sahara le lijiye ga:smokin:

Re: Rivers and their impact on culture

I think Chen-aab probably mean crystal clear water (Moon like water). The proof of its being romantic and important in Punjab's folk culture are the tales of Sohni Mehwal and Heer Ranjha. Sohni Mehwal has also been sung by Shah Latif and is therefore as famous in Sindh as in Punjab.

Re: Rivers and their impact on culture

Rivers and springs are the life blood of the land.

My people once drifted from river to river and someday I would like to follow that path on a permanent basis... alas I'm a semi nomad today.

Re: Rivers and their impact on culture

Which river is most important in your area?

Re: Rivers and their impact on culture

In the UK its the River Severn and the Severn valley is a stones throw away from my residence. In Pakistan it would be variable... in Punjab it was the river Jelum. But the further North West I went the more important the Attock and Kabul rivers became. While to the hunting grounds in the North East I cant know for sure which river system it was as I never investigated its source and only passed some of the great lakes occasionally.

Re: Rivers and their impact on culture

Waise maine calcutha or bombai mein apna bachpan bitahaya. Calcutha mein Hoogli river - bombai mein koi river nahin. Isliye Ganga maia hi humare liya mahathvapoorna hai!

Re: Rivers and their impact on culture

How is Hoogli now. I read that in 1980s it was facing danger of drying up?

Re: Rivers and their impact on culture

I’m still waiting for a person from Lahore to say something about Ravi… :hmmm:

Re: Rivers and their impact on culture

how is muqaddas Sindhu river.......................?:D

Re: Rivers and their impact on culture

Last time I saw the Hoogli was in 1981 December. It was still allright then. As the snowcaps line in the Himalays start receding and moving higher, I think eventually rivers will start drying up. It is a pity humans are polluting the earth like there is no tomorrow.
