Recomend your fav desi resturants in different cities

Re: Recomend your fav desi resturants in different cities

I really want to try Usmania Chinese, bint-e-naeem, does it taste like Pakistani chinese, for instance china town lahore? I went to this chinese halaal place on devon once, had to walk all the way close to the jewish end of devon but it wasnt anything special, neither was that afghan place near it. p.s. where is usmania chinese again, skokie?

Re: Recomend your fav desi resturants in different cities

spock, usmania chinese devon par hee hai...right across usmania restaurant.

Re: Recomend your fav desi resturants in different cities

^ oh yeah my bad :smack: ive seen it! so is it any good? the one in skokie is browns chicken right?

Yup right where the old Usmania used to be. Never had Chinese in lahore. Had it once in Karachi & it was not doubt the best I have ever had. Usmania Chinese has a lil. desi touch to it. Whenever you go there try their Chicken Rangoons, Schezuan Chicken & Sesame Chicken.

The other Chinese place you are talking about was Jumbo. Long gone now. A halal Thai place opened there. Their food is okay I guess. Also the Afghani place has closed now. There is an Afghani restaurant on Montrose Ave. right by MCC in Chicago. They have good food too & the owner is a really nice guy.

Also have u ever tried Inchins Bamboo garden & Hot Wok? Both are in Shaumburg. Not a big fan of Hot Wok (like their Chicken Wing Niblets though) but I am so in love with Inchin's American Chopsuey.

Re: Recomend your fav desi resturants in different cities

Browns was also on Devon. It closed last year. Italian Express is over there now.

Re: Recomend your fav desi resturants in different cities

there is no good desi resturant where I live...we have a nice afghani resturant but not a nice pakistani resturant :(

Ohhhh thanks for reminding me! Actually yeah lemme give credit where credit is deserved… in terms of mithai/snacks Gourmet on CIH in Brooklyn is off the hook. Everything I’ve had from there is awesomeeee! The samosas, bun-kebab sandwich, kheer, mithai, chaat… delicious :yummy: The only thing I dont like is that there’s like no space between teh counter where you pay at and the tables where people sit and eat (ive only seen men eating)… so the “accidental” touches and hushed whispers of nastiness are just so off-putting… Ive stopped going there and just send my BIL if I ever need anything. I remember now, Gyro King on Foster is also pretty good for quick, cheap and yummy fatty rice and chicken goodness. The Village on newkirk where sultan grill is also nice.
They have a mix of middle eastern and pakistani dishes. Not bad at all.

I also loveeee Ali Baba in Queens… they’ve changed the decor up a bit now and its even more beautiful now than before. I love their samboosak and rice platters. Yummmm

Re: Recomend your fav desi resturants in different cities

Bint-e-Naeem, you're making me hungry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JK Kabab House is good, I totally forgot about them.

Hotwok is one of my favorite places...love their chicken wontons! Desi chinese there is so good.

Bamboo Garden is nice but I dont remember the food though. I threw my fiance a birthday party there and recall the customer service being awesome but the food isnt impressionable...kwim?

I havent tried Usmania Chinese yet...I was so disappointed in how they managed to muck up my butter chicken. Its my favorite thing!

You bought back some sweet memories with Jumbo Chinese though...we hung out there a lot when we were kids...good old days.

Re: Recomend your fav desi resturants in different cities

Atlanta, GA:

Sabri Kabob house
Mughals
Kohe-Noor (behind Mughals)

If you like American food (burgers, wings, etc.) but HALAL, then try (all are located around the same area):

Gully's Burger Delight in Lawrenceville, GA
Eat and Take in Duluth, GA
Murry's in Hurry for Halal Pizza, tikka chicken pizza, etc., in Lawrenceville, around RT-316 and Sugarloaf Parkway

In decatur area, try:

Gokuls (indian vegetarian and good Mithai shop)

There are many more in Decatur, in DeKalb county, near Atlanta but I hardly go there.

There is persian / iranian place, Dervaish Baba in Alpharetta, GA, near Roswell. Good food.

I used to go to sultan grill alot, but the food was in all honesty not very special. and overpriced.
i only went once to village the first day it opened up and there was a big group of uncles sitting at the table and they were staring at us like their eyes would pop out, stare when we walked in stared as we walked out. really just ugh.

Thanks, im going to go there, but see here is the thing, after college I dont get to go to Chitown as much as I used to before. We'd literally take off randomly drive for 2 hours in the middle of the night and get to tahoora for halwa poori, cant do all that anymore, so I go like once every 2-3 months and with one meal at Devon I really hope that Usmania Chinese place is good. The menu looks like any other Chinese restaurants here. The ones in Pakistan would most likely not have the three items you mentioned. I guess its more like a Zabiya substitute to other Chinese places here? Btw, you tried the lo mein at Chinatown Chicago! Amazing stuff!

Wow, things have changed! Yep, I just realized I was talking about 2004! Afghani place sounds good! In Islamabad, the famous Kabuli restaurant at Jinnah Super had always been one of my favourite places to go eat.

Nope, but I do goto the burbs more often now to meet friends/family! I'll keep them in mind ia, thanks!!

I haven't dined at the Lal Qila but have seen it, and it would be hard to avoid it considering it happens to be on Wilmslow Road. :D

I have family near Alum Rock. :p

Re: Recomend your fav desi resturants in different cities

In London, it would definitely have to be Tayyabs (mixed grill is too good esp. chomps!) and Mirch Masala in 2nd place...

Salloo's restaurant in Belgravia, London - I have never had lambchops so good - though it cost a mint.

Now they have starting making KATI ROLLS - it's like a puri or paratha with either chicken or lamb with tons of masala chutneys in it - it's greasy but soooo good.

hmmm brumi / mean u get me lives near Alum Rock:D

i might go in half term holidays at laal Qila:p

Re: Recomend your fav desi resturants in different cities

in toronto, lahore tikka house, of course!! its on gerrard street, has a rickshaw parked outside it, and serves up the freshest yummiest butter naan!!! mmm...
i've also heard eddie's wok n' roll in mississauga has amazing hakka chinese food. going there tomorrow night, so i'll fill y'all in.

Aww PSquared if i was in Chicago maybe we could have gone out to eat or something. My treat for making you hungry :)

I m gonna try Hot Wok's Chicken wontons next time I am in Chicago. Oh & their Chicken Manchurian soup is good too.

Inchin's food... impressionable... I kind of agree with you on that. They don't really bother to sprinkle those extras on the food. Lol.

Know what's really weird my hubby loves Usmania's butter Chicken. For me its okay. Its too heavy. What went wrong with the butter Chicken? Another thing I have noticed with Usmania's Biryani is that if you were to eat from a pan like at someone's wedding or some event it tastes 1000 times better like the real deal from Pakistani Dekh ki Biryani. Check out Usmania Chinese some day. Its way different than the Hot Wok & Inchin's. It tastes more like IndoPak-Chinese.

No problemo :) Spock. Chicago has def. gone through a lot of changes since 04. Don't put your hopes up too high as everyone has different taste when it comes to food. In my opinion you won't be disappointed.

The dishes I mentioned are mainly American Chinese dishes. Schezuan is Southern Chinese. Didn't know up till now that even in Chinese food there are different kinds with different tastes. Like how a Karachi Pulao would be way different than a Punjabi Pulao. Thus different names.

Lo Mein at Chinatown Chicago? Nopes. Is this a restaurant in Chinatown or a dish served in Chinatown. There are a lot of restaurants in Chinatown. Got me confused there.

Whilst you're there, don't tell the staff you are from the midlands, they'll charge you extra. :D

wish i knew this when I lived in london......a lot of the restaurants I went to were "fusion" and needed something more authentic:)
