He did not elaborate on the quotes at all...in fact, the quote itself had little to do with any argument forwrading the point of view that spreading faith by force is irrational...rather, it simply stated that the Emporer thought Muhammad (pbuh) was evil. Period. It did not fit in his overall speech, so it should only be construed as a pot shot...

The idea came from a Chrisitan preist. Wiig and company went along with the idea to secure their release…the idea of conversion did not come from the brigades…OBVIOUSLY. Now, I don’t fault either of the two jouranlists…it was a cunning scheme, and it worked.
The idea was that they would simply tell their captors that they were in the process of converting to Islam. In an attempt at being coy, the captors demanded they make their conversion public. That’s what they did.

No, it had nothing to do with the conversion plan. It had everything to do with saving their arses, because at least one of them (the American) was going to get killed, unconditionally. The conversion idea, in fact, was just the curve ball they needed to secure their release…it was not a condition of it.

Meanwhile, it would be alleged by others that this message represents an unusual and suspect change in tone.
