Persians

Does anyone know why persians, in general, do not observe religious (islamic) practices? I know alot are zorastrians and ba’hai but majority are shia muslims yet i often hear of them drinking, clubbing, etc.
And when we get glimpses of Iran on the news channels it looks like a conservative society but its expats are anything but.

Re: Persians

sense of insecurity!

Re: Persians

persians are fine. nou roz is one.
they celebrate eids as well.

Re: Persians

I didn't necessarily mean celebrating the islamic holidays; but more so on how they carry themselves. Perhaps because Iran's view on islam is a theocratic one; yet when one views images of tehran for example the oppisite picture is displayed. One of a more conservative society but this is definitely not evident from the many iranians i've met.

Re: Persians

They are "khulay dhulay" people... almost everybody ruled them or they passed through them, leaving Persians with precious gifts such as other traditions and cultures.

Re: Persians

most of them who are not in iran are the ones who ran away from the conservative islamic government long time ago... so how do u expect them to be

Re: Persians

i think its hard for one person to make a judgement call like that...to make a statement like that is a bit ignorant in my opinion...no offense

i also think no matter what nation you go to you will find that there are religious people and non-religious people...it doesn't really pertain to everyone that is part of that culture

i've actually been to iran and there are PLENTY of both types of people...

Re: Persians

I'm not talking about iranians in iran. I'm talking about the ones that have come to the west.

I've grown up with persians; most are really good friends of mine. But I've noticed they couldn't be bothered to fast or pray or not drink etc. So I was wondering if it had to do with the persian culture; like i said their view is a theocratic islam perhaps that is the reason for their laid back attitude?

Re: Persians

I dont know which persians you know, but most of I know including my ancestors did a lot of islamic religious practises. And most of who I know here are either christians or parsi. So these have hardly anything in common with Islamic practises.
And yes there is a minority, who has been "de-railed", but those we find in every tribe, culture, nationality.

Re: Persians

most of the persians you meet in America are Iranians who fled Iran when the Shah was deposed----they are the elite who weren't really into islam anyways...that is why they call themselves Persians NOT iranaians b/c they want to identify with their cultural heritage and not the current iranian country.

If you meet Iranians who are from iran you'll meet more religiously observant ones or rather ones who celebrate the holidays though how religious they are or are not is as varied as everyone else.

Re: Persians

Geography maybe ...the European influence for the Turkish atleast..

Re: Persians

phir app ko avatar may prince of persia rehkana chi tha, snake nahi :mocking:

Re: Persians

cannot judge them all...but one thing that I have seen 99 percent of the time is that...they celebrate zaorouz with full hulla gulla and wine etc etc, but could not bother much with Eid calabration. I have been told by my iranian collegue that they were so much oppressed in Iran by the government....like all women must take hijab by law and all children must finish reading Quran by law also. So her theory she absolutely hates the islamic ways and doesn't wanna follow them once they moved here 5-6 yrs ago.

Re: Persians

Most of the Iranian expats are the people who weren't happy living "Islamic" lives in Iran. People who are happy with that lifestyle don't emigrate.

Re: Persians

I would have to disagree with the idea that the only reason they would emigrate would be because of the religious nature of the government. Education or better quality of life are also factors, no?

Re: Persians

So what abt Albanians/Serbians/Balkan ppl?

Re: Persians

my ancestors were Persians

they were Persian Jews who had converted to Islam who fled Persia in the 15th Century after the Sunni-Shia war and settled in Kashmir

They were from this region called Bayat or something, when the British came, they send a Scottish Administrator to run Kashmir, and he misspelled Bayat, into a Scottish last name, which is Butt

That is why Butt, which is a Scottish Last name became associated with people in Kashmir

Re: Persians

persians have nice rugs

Re: Persians

Actually people, ive noticed, find a way to fuse culture and religion together.

The SouthEast Europeans and Turks fuse their religion within the confines of Western Culture and produce a more organized, disciplined, and personal religious experience. The Arabs use religion to control their women folk. The Indians-Pakistani-Bangladeshi community uses religion and fuses it into dominant Hindustani Culture.

Re: Persians

Albanians are hated most in that region.
