Re: PCB tamasha - PCB plans action against Afridi -
I think it is more about Butt than it is about Waqar or Intekhab. Waqar’s report was used by Butt to sack Afridi without even asking him a single question.
Waqar’s spat with Afridi was about selection. And it was Afridi’s right to be involved in selection of the team.
Problem is Waqar’s attitude. It is not only Afridi who got upset with him. Look at Mohsin Khan and other senior players:
Interestingly the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt also had to hold a meeting with chief selector Mohsin Khan on Thursday to convince him to not resign after the latter blamed Waqar for interfering in the matters of the national selection committee.
Mohsin had made his displeasure clear when the PCB changed the squad for the tests in the West Indies submitted by the national selectors on the insistence of Waqar Younis. “Waqar apparently has rubbed Afridi and some of the other players the wrong way with his growing control and authority in the team.”
You should know that even Miandad refused to be a batting coach in his presence. So there must be something about Waqar.
Re: PCB tamasha - PCB plans action against Afridi -
^^ Agree 100%. thats what i said few weeks ago.
In american football usually the coach is the star of the team. he is highest paid usually, makes all decision, gives all the interviews and gets sacked if the performance is bad.
coach should not be the one who just teaches you how to bat or ball, he should be using his experience in driving the team.
IF you look at the success story of indian team, peter kirtsen was as respected and important as dhoni and was given equal credit for the good performance. Sadly even the best south asian cricketers dont make a good coach. coaches are made of different soil. we need foreign coach to bring its work ethics, management, professionalism and unbiased judgement in our teams.
Depends on who you have as a coach. Wasn't it the coach against whom the French football world cup team revolted?
dhoni makes every decision in team, kristen was just backing him up and helping players like ghambir, look what happend with chappel,i don't think on field coach can do much it's captain
Re: PCB tamasha - PCB plans action against Afridi -
See most Pakistani cricketers are not used to the authoritative behaviour of coach, which he should have, as he's the person to drive the team. Pakistani cricketers want their autonomy. When coach restricts them, he becomes a bad guy. And then they start complaining of his strict attitude.
In indian cricket team also, Dhoni is the person who decides on the ground, but off the ground, its all coach's planning and decisions. I think all indian cricketers pay a great respect to whoever the coach is, one of the reasons of their success.
Once I was flying on my way to US and there was a soccer club team sitting next to me who jumped in from Dubai, I observed them very closely and their respect for the coach was exemplary. I think the coaches deserve this kinda respect.
Regarding Miandad, he didnt want to be a part of coaching team with waqar, not becuz anything is wrong with him, rather miandad wants to be the only coach with all authority. Again, point being the same, that coaches should have that authority.
And that reminds me of the similar conflict that Afridi had when Miandad was coach. And I'll try to get his vid when during one man-of-the-match ceremony he stated during interview, "nobody should try to teach me cuz I already know what I'm doing".. Ofcourse he was referring to Miandad. Now how can you expect such cricketer that he'd not have problems with other coaching staff??!!
Re: PCB tamasha - PCB plans action against Afridi -
^^ you are dead wrong. In this game of cricket it is a the captain that leads the show in the field. His say in selection should not be challenged unless he continues to show bad selection and as a consequence keeps losing matches.
When all of this supposedly took place, Afridi had already won the series 3-0 and there was no reason to not allow him final say in selection again.
Do you think Strauss, Ponting, Clark, Dhoni will be dictated by a coach on who they select for the final 11.
The coach's role is maybe advise on a certain player's ability based on their current shown form or lack of it. They should be an adviser not master of selection.
Re: PCB tamasha - PCB plans action against Afridi -
Don't argue, show the evidence.
Every team other than Pakistan is a proven evidence on its own. Look at the 1996 win of Srilanka. Do you think it was Arjuna Ranatunga behind that great success?? Talk to a srilankan and he'll give you few hours lecture on it.
Cricket is not like soccer.
This is one of most ridiculous reason to be given for any sports. Its the same opinion that some ppl used to give in 90s that cricket dont need hi-tech analysis cuz "its cricket, not any other sports". Later when coaches started using laptops and computer analysts become a part of squad, everyone got convinced that "yes, cricket is also a sports just like others". Period.
Re: PCB tamasha - PCB plans action against Afridi -
Absolutely wrong. Cricket is different from every other sport. It is captain who wins the matches and it is captain who leads the team. Everyone says that Pakistan won the worldcup because of Imran’s leadership, while no one even remembers who the coach was.
This is what Imran said on this spat between captain and coach:
“A coach’s role is subservient to captain. Cricket is the only game where the captain’s role superior and no coach can take the lead. The PCB should have defined the roles of the captain and the coach,” said Khan.
“Look at India where captain (Mahendra Singh) Dhoni is the man in charge. Ricky Ponting used to take the lead in the Australian team and the coach sits behind the scenes. It’s quite clear.”
Re: PCB tamasha - PCB plans action against Afridi -
Wow...people come to cricketnama defining coach's role and comparing with other sports. Its says all about your cricketing knowledge. Have you ever played a real competitive cricket match yourself. Its captains who calls all the shots on field, not coach. Coach has no authority once the coin is in the air. Coach can advise captain on selection for final IX and help him laying out the game plan. But the final selection and execution of the plan is captain's responsibility.
Re: PCB tamasha - PCB plans action against Afridi -
“Look at India where captain (Mahendra Singh) Dhoni is the man in charge. Ricky Ponting used to take the lead in the Australian team and the coach sits behind the scenes. It’s quite clear.”
And what do you think the coach is doing "behind the scenes"??? He's the person holding all the threads via which the captain makes its moves. Or do you think he's one idiot person who is hired just to get a lavish salary while captain does it all??
I know what Imran Khan says but that's not the modern cricket is based on. Do you know how crutial the role of aussies coach is, in their entire series of success?? Thats why I gave the example of srilankan cricket which blossomed out of nowhere in 96. If you see the 2011 final again, you'll hear how all the cricket experts dedicated the success of India to the coach Kirsten. Yes, dhoni was a part of that machinery, an important part playing a very crucial role but behind all what happens lies the coach's planning.
And who do you think should be blamed for not taking the final power play in the quarter finals v/s India?? Its the damn coach not the captain. It was his responsibility.
And that's why instead of beating the same drum, you should talk to any of the persons from the country who have success due to their coaches. When you are ready to give them blame for the failures, you should also be ready to assign them the due authority. Thats all!
Re: PCB tamasha - PCB plans action against Afridi -
Looks like we have bigger experts on cricket here then the cricketers themselves. Sorry Imran Khan. Your opinion does not matter to "experts" here. :/
Both coach and captain are important. And no one should try to step on other's toes. But comparing cricket coach to soccer coach is injustice to the role cricket captain plays in a match. Coach can make strategies but in the ever changing match situations, it is captain who has to make amendments to that strategy.
As far as Waqar is concerned, it was not only Afridi who was pi**ed off at him.
Someone also mentioned Miandad refusing to be the batting coach. The reason he refused was again due to Waqar's arrogance and dictatorial style. Miandad, being a much senior player than Waqar, refused to accept his dictations.
But in the end it is Butt who is the racist nincompoop. He is the one who should be kicked out. He has thrown Pak cricket in a ditch.
