Pakistani scientist in Nobel team

By Our Correspondent

WASHINGTON, Oct 13: Pakistani professor Adil Najam, now teaching at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, US, is amongst the team of scientists and experts in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that shares the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former US Vice President Al Gore.

The 2007 Peace Prize, announced in Stockholm, Sweden, on Friday includes a gold medal and $1.5 million, is to be shared between Al Gore and the IPCC for enhancing the understanding of the science of climate change. The IPCC is a panel of the world’s most eminent and leading scientists working on global warming and it produces its scientific assessment every 4-5 years.

These assessments, especially the most recent one, have been influential in moving global climate policy, including changes in US and other country positions on the subject.

Prof Adil Najam has served as an expert on this prestigious panel for eight years, and as a Convening Lead Author for its most recent report. Along with other scientists on the panel he helped shape the findings of the IPCC, especially on issues related sustainable development and other developing country interests.

Dr Adil Najam holds a doctorate and two Masters degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a specialisation in negotiation from Harvard Law School, and an engineering degree from UET, Lahore.

He has taught at MIT, Boston University, University of Massachusetts and currently at Tufts University. He is author of more than a dozen books.

Re: Pakistani scientist in Nobel team

MASHALLAH very good news thx for sharing

Re: Pakistani scientist in Nobel team

How is he a Pakistani scientist? He is an American. What is Pakistan getting credit for?

Re: Pakistani scientist in Nobel team

Is he pakistani born?

Re: Pakistani scientist in Nobel team

Mr. Adil Najam used to be host on a ptv show, started right after Benazir Bhutto was elected prime minister in 1988. The show was very pro-Peoples party and against Zia’s regime. Adil himself was a very staunch supporter of PPP, later moved to Boston MA. He also appeared in local news and media discussions in boston many times, specially after 9-11.

Re: Pakistani scientist in Nobel team

He is. Please check his website I mentioned above

Re: Pakistani scientist in Nobel team

Even if that was the case, he probably gave up his Pakistani citizenship long ago. So, now he is an American citizen working in US, and was honored for his research work in America. It baffles me how people try to get credit for things they have nothing to do with.

Re: Pakistani scientist in Nobel team

His alma mata is UET Lahore. Pakistan does not take credit, but they should as India does. BRAVO! Good work Adil!

Re: Pakistani scientist in Nobel team

You don’t have to give up Pakistani citizenship to gain US citizenship.

Good job Adil and good luck :k:

Re: Pakistani scientist in Nobel team

He runs the blog site: http://pakistaniat.com/

Re: Pakistani scientist in Nobel team

I saw him in 90s on few talk shows on ptv. He comes across as a very sensible person.

Re: Pakistani scientist in Nobel team

good to know. media should have coveraged it, n govt must recognize the need of these gemz.

Re: Pakistani scientist in Nobel team

Is he the fellow who was the host of SAF Games in 1989 on PTV?

Re: Pakistani scientist in Nobel team

Dr shaaib, what kind of logic is that? If all the Indians (1 billion +) decided to jump of the cliff.... should follow them?

BTW, this is nothing more than feel good story. Kind of like "aww we won something" when in reality "we" we haven't won anything. The guy deserves credit for his work, and he was horned for it, but why are we linking him to Pakistan?

Also, Pakistan one and only Noble Peace Prize winner Dr. Abdus Salam never got the respect or the credit for his work in Pakistan b/c according to some he was not sufficiently Muslim.

Re: Pakistani scientist in Nobel team

I think he should run in Pakistani elections

Re: Pakistani scientist in Nobel team

Shamraz khan, If a Pakistan does anything well abroad, its recongnition to Pakistanis and Pakistan. you can take it away the credit that if that very same pakistani get enviroment to create or contribute well to society. it certainly the oppertunity providers host countries and institutes.

But that is wide available to all local americans, however if a Pakistani avail the oppertunity and excelled credit goes to Pakistan for produing such person as well.
If Adil najam has never been graduated from Pakistani schools and University he couldnt have gone to any uni in US at all.

If I done something amazing here in UK, it will still be a credit to Pakistan.

Re: Pakistani scientist in Nobel team

Depends on his 'desparation' and greed level.

Re: Pakistani scientist in Nobel team

When "British & US born, Pakistani Origin" terrorists can be called "PAKISTANIS" (only coz their Fathers and Forefathers were Pakistani), I wonder whats stopping you in accepting a "Pakistani Born, Pakistan's Educated" guy who moved to US for better future a "PAKISTANI"?

*NAJAM holds DUAL nationality and can be called a US citizen and a Pakistani Citizen at the same time....legally that is! *

Re: Pakistani scientist in Nobel team

^^^ excatly, if something bad, bran them Pakistanis even they are born and bred abroad. if something good dont accept them PAkistanis at all. cause it may create a good image for Pakistan as a nation!! thats what all the world media is about so these people
