**Power failures in several Durban suburbs have caused havoc over the past two days, with businesses and residents severely affected.
According to the eThekwini Municipality’s electricity fault centre, power to Umbilo and Glenwood was cut on Tuesday afternoon after “a major transmission fault”. Most of the areas had been without power since 9pm on Monday night, with electricity to some areas being restored for only about five hours on Tuesday.
On Monday, Durban North, Umgeni, Springfield Park, Morningside, Overport and Inanda experienced power supply interruptions owing to a problem with the high voltage network at a substation in Springfield.
According to Mohammed Arbee, who runs Sky Envelopes factory in Umbilo, power was shut off about 9.30pm on Monday and was restored about 8am yesterday . Power was shut off again about 1pm yesterday and had not been restored by 6pm last night.**
