Two surprise inclusions as Inzamam returns: Probables for Bangladesh series named

LAHORE, Aug 5: After a lengthy absence star batsman Inzamam-ul-Haq was finally included on Tuesday in the list of 20 probables for an eight-day national training camp at Gaddafi Stadium from Saturday.

The selectors finalised the list for first two Tests of the home series against Bangladesh. However, chief selector Aamir Sohail indicated that it was not a final list as any other player, from those who are playing in England and touring South Africa with the Pakistan Academy team could also be considered.

**"We have tried to persist with almost the same players who have been in the team for the last four months. But that doesn’t mean that we will restrict ourselves to these 20 players only.

There are some other players, mainly the Pakistan Academy ones, who are in our mind. If situation demands and there are some exceptional performances from Academy players they will certainly be considered for selection," Aamir said. **

This clearly points to a possible Test cap for controversial medium-pacer Junaid Zia, son of PCB chairman. Junaid left early Tuesday morning for South Africa with the Academy squad.

Inzamam was widely tipped for a recall after being sidelined since the World Cup in South Africa, where he mustered only 19 runs in six matches.

Aamir pointed out that Inzamam was never dropped after the World Cup but only rested. **“People might say that we have recalled Inzamam. But we never dropped him and instead rested him so that he can regroup and recompose himself. The layoff must have surely increased his appetite for international cricket,” **

Asked why the committee continues to follow the policy of pick and drop without giving proper chances to players, Aamir said that “we want to give chances to more players in the home series”.

Faisal Athar, Bilal Asad, Naved Latif, Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan and Mohammad Zahid are some prominent names who missed out without getting proper exposure. Faisal, Bilal and, Naved Latif are in the Pakistan Academy squad.

**Asked about the omission of opener Imran Nazir and all-rounder Azhar Mahmood, Aamir said that both could be considered for the one-day series. **

Asked if wicket-keeper/batsman Kamran Akmal will get a place in th team or he was only called from Ireland to attend the seven-day training camp, the chairman selection committee said that the player was willing to join the camp.

Kamran is currently playing in the Irish league for LeemaVadi CC. If not selected, the player will suffer financially as he will be here on his own expenses after cancelling the contract.

**About the surprise inclusion of left-arm pacer Mohammad Khalil and left-arm spinner Abdul Sattar, Aamir remarked that Bangladesh appeared weak against left-arm bowling and therefore they both had been inducted.

“We have included two rookie bowlers - Khalil and Sattar. They have shown that they have the talent to excel at the highest level. We have invited them for the camp so that they can improve and learn but while saying this I am certainly not ruling them out of contention for the series,” he said.

On the contrary, both Khalil and Sattar had performed with moderate success in whatever competition they had played. Khalil, 20, has represented Pakistan in the Under-19 World Cup. He has appeared in six first-class matches some four years back for Redco and Lahore in which he had picked 16 wickets at 25.81.

Sattar, 19, bagged 24 wickets in five Cornelius Trophy matches last season for Larkana. Aamir further said that Saqlain had not been considered because his county was reluctant to release him as were Mohammad Sami and Younis Khan for other reasons. **

“Fast bowler Sami is certainly out of the first two Tests because of sprained ankle while Younis requested not to be considered because of domestic commitments. As regards Saqlain, he requested us that he may be allowed to complete the season with Surrey which we accepted,” Aamir added.

Middle-order batsman Hasan Raza also got the selectors nod after a long period.

Hasan was not picked for the three-nation tournament in Sri Lanka also involving New Zealand despite good showing in the preceding farcical trial matches at Gaddafi Stadium.

On the other hand, Shoaib Akhtar will be available only for the first two Tests. "We have talked to Durham (Shoaib’s county) who have agreed to release Shoaib Akhtar only for the first two Test matches.

"Initially, we had agreed to release Shoaib for the entire series. But with the unavailability of Mohammad Sami, we have been forced to call our premier strike bowler. "Nevertheless, we will also fulfil our commitment with Durham and will permit him (Shoaib) to complete his season with them.

“We hope that by that time, Sami would have regained fitness,” commented Zakir Khan, the PCB general manager cricket operations. The squad for the first Test, starting in Karachi from Aug 20, will be named on Aug 16.

I think it just might be.
Former players shouldn’t be in the selection commitee.
Their personal problems always get in teams interest.
Though I think recalling Mushy won’t be a good idea, as we already have another first class legy in the team, Kaneria.
Saqlain is an idot, this is his rare chance of setting foot in the team, if some youngster does well, then he can kiss his international cricket career bye bye.

Wat an idiot Saqlain is...County Cricket is more important for him than playing for his country...what an ass.

inzimama is back :stuck_out_tongue:

Inzamam back in the reckoning
Wisden CricInfo staff - August 5, 2003

Inzamam-ul-Haq, who has been out of favour with the selectors since the World Cup, is back in the reckoning for Pakistan’s home season. He has been included in the list of 20 probables for the forthcoming series against Bangladesh. Aamer Sohail, the former Test opener who is now the chairman of Pakistan’s selectors, said: “We never dropped Inzamam but gave him rest, and hope that this rest will do a world of good to him in the coming home season.”

Inzamam was one of eight players dumped after Pakistan’s disappointing first-round exit from the World Cup in March. But there is no place for Pakistan’s then-captain Waqar Younis, who recently said he still wants to play for the country. Sohail explained: “We are focusing on players who we have used in the last four months in our transition phase.”

Inzamam said he was delighted to be back in the reckoning: “I was a bit disappointed on being out of the team, but now I am ready for the home season.” Inzamam has scored 6214 runs in 85 Tests, plus 8957 in 290 one-dayers. His last Test innings on home soil produced Pakistan’s second-highest score - 329, made against New Zealand at Lahore in May 2002. But Inzamam managed only 19 runs in six World Cup games - a phase he described as the worst of his career. But he explained: “Never in this phase I thought of leaving cricket, I have a lot of it left in me.”

Pakistan take on Bangladesh, who have lost 20 of their 21 Tests so far, in a three-match series which starts at Karachi on August 20. The Test series will be followed by five one-day internationals, before Pakistan host South Africa in three Tests and three ODIs in September and October. New Zealand also visit for five one-dayers in November.

Pakistan had faced a shortage of players for the Bangladesh series after their fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, allrounder Azhar Mahmood and batsman Younis Khan were allowed to skip the series. Then Mohammad Sami, another fast bowler, was ruled out with an ankle injury he picked up playing county cricket for Kent, which forced the selectors to reverse their earlier decision about Shoaib. Sohail explained: “We had to call Shoaib from England where he was playing county cricket [for Durham] to cover Sami’s injury - but we are not taking Bangladesh lightly.”

Farhan Adil, an uncapped batsman from Karachi, is tipped to make his debut in the first Test - the squad for which will be named on August 12 - while two other uncapped players called up are Mohammad Khalil, a left-arm fast bowler, and the left-arm spinner Abdul Sattar.

Pakistan preliminary squad Mohammad Hafeez, Taufeeq Umar, Farhan Adil, Yasir Hameed, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Yousuf Youhana, Misbah-ul-Haq, Hasan Raza, Rashid Latif (capt and wk), Shoaib Malik, Abdul Razzaq, Kamran Akmal (wk), Umar Gul, Shoaib Akhtar, Shabbir Ahmed, Mohammad Khalil, Najaf Shah, Danish Kaneria, Abdul Sattar, Jaffer Nazir.

gd to see the big man bak inshallah he will be back on top of his cricket :stuck_out_tongue:

about saqi ithink its more the fact that pakistan needs a batsman who can bowl and they found it in shoaib maliks so saqi doesnt want to be embaraced by not being picked to put it mildly :p

Yeah saqi is done for good. ACtually bonglas would be looking forward to face saqi than kaneria or any other leggies..Saqi is ineffective and finished. He knows thatt too..why do you think he is reluctant to play the bonglas? His career would have come to an end if he failed to deliver goods against the minnows..Besides that I can't stand him..He is too much of a whinny ass now..always ready to blame the fielders..ah never mind..we have shoaib malik, hafeez and both can bat. So it's realy pointless to let saqlain play..

i think that when someone finishs they start putting them down i mean he has i think nearly 300 or more wickets thats not easy. though i have to say kay i think he is past his prime. he was oen guy i realy admired and started spinning after watching him sigh

**In another development, wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal will be unable to join the training camp as his club boss in England has left for vacations and at the same time has locked Kamran’s passport in his locker. Kamran, in a message to the selectors, has conveyed that he will not be able to get his travel documents until August 16. ** :rotfl: :rotfl: :smack: :smack: :hehe: :hehe:

man get to the next homeoffice + Pak Consulate and solve the matter …

BTW what happens if INZI score like in the WC (Allah na karray) ..... but what kinda scenarios await him then ??????

He will be in the same boat as Afridi.

That’s probably the lamest and most hillarious excuse I have ever heard :hehe::rotfl::hehe:

About Inzi’s performance, Dont worry I guarantee he will be back in Form. Earlier all the out-of-form paki players used to play against India to gain their form now it is Bangladesh. :hehe:

Asif that’s a good one really … but somehow true mate :hehe: :hehe: :hehe:

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

and about Inzi…if he doesnt perform against the bengalis then I think he is done for good.

Personally I think Inzi will be back with a bang. The guy is just too good to be out of form for long. As they say form is temporary class is permanent and Inzi has class.

I agree and have full faith in the big guy to get among the runs very soon. The BD series is a near-perfect net session for him to tune his game before the season gets into gear against stronger oppostion.

I hope Saeed Bin Nasir gets selected in the team.

PCB invite Saeed-bin-Nasir to training camp

KARACHI: The national selection committee on Thursday displayed character in setting a wrong right when they called up promising young batsman Saeed-bin-Nasir for the Pakistan probables training camp starting in Lahore from tomorrow (Saturday).

The 24-year-old Saeed has been one of the more consistent players on the domestic circuit for the last two years but was surprisingly neither included in the Pakistan academy team that has gone to South Africa nor selected in the 20-member Pakistan squad for the Test series against Bangladesh.

But chief selector Aamer Sohail spoke to the youngster and invited him for the camp. Saeed was told by Board officials that he had to report for the camp training today (Friday) to camp commandant Haroon Rasheed.

A spokesman of the national selection committee, in a statement, said: “He was always under consideration but since we restricted ourselves to just 20 players for the camp, he narrowly missed out the original list. But we are glad that he will now be up with the best of the best and hopefully show his potential further.” However, the question remains whether Saeed has been invited to the camp due to the unavailability of wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal or that the selectors believe he deserved to be in the 20 in the first place.

And people were saying Bangladesh should not have test status. Now look Bangladesh is going to take the blame for India to help the Indians keep the ratio (52:30) low between PAK and Inda. :hehe: :hehe:

Sherrybaba, both Malik and Hafeez can't replace Saqlain as the wicket taking test bowler, maybe Kaneria.
Reason of that is because Malik and Hafeez are part time bowlers, who don't really look for wickets but to rather keep the Run Rate down in 50 over matches, they are economical but not good spinners.
I think Saqlain should rethink his plans and play against Bangladesh.
