Pakistan military ordered to return fire if attacked by Nato forces

I don’t think we have the capabilities to take on the NATO/the US.

Pakistan’s military commanders have ordered their troops to return fire if they come under attack from Nato forces, raising the prospect of further deadly clashes along the country’s border with Afghanistan.

General Ashfaq Kayani, Pakistan’s army chief, gave the new order in response to the recent deaths of 24 soldiers when their border posts came under fire from Nato helicopters.

Kayani is under immense pressure from within his own ranks over the two-hour bombardment by the helicopters of an ally, to which the Pakistani air force did not respond. The incident piled further humiliation on a military still stung by the US special forces operation in May that killed Osama bin Laden deep inside Pakistan.

**“I want to emphasise and leave no ambiguity in the rules of engagement for everyone down the chain of command,” Kayani said in a letter to his troops. "When under attack, you have full liberty of action to respond with all capabilities at your disposal. This will require no clearance at any level.

“I have very clearly directed that any act of aggression will be responded to with full force, regardless of the cost and consequences.”**

The communique, issued in Urdu, will be read out by local commanders to their soldiers.

Kayani also said that the air force did not respond to the Nato attack “due to breakdown of communication with the affected posts”.

The move effectively transforms the role of more than 100,000 Pakistan troops deployed along its western border from counter-insurgency to border protection duty.

The Nato attack happened on the border between the Afghan province of Kunar and the Mohmand part of Pakistan’s tribal area. The border posts were 300 metres inside Pakistani territory.

Pakistan claims the attack was “unprovoked” and continued even after it alerted Nato to the fact that its post was coming under fire. US officials have claimed a combined Afghan and US special forces squad operating close to the border came under fire from suspected militants on the Pakistani side, and that they responded by calling in air support. An investigation by the US military is under way.

In retaliation for the incident, Pakistan has blocked the transit of Nato supplies through its territory, ended the US use of an airbase and is boycotting next week’s high-level international meeting on Afghanistan in the German city of Bonn.

Pakistan’s co-operation is considered vital to stabilising Afghanistan and pushing the Taliban into peace talks.

Re: Pakistan military ordered to return fire if attacked by Nato forces

I believe Army/Air Force have full capability to take down any type of air vehicle deployed in Afghanistan theater. Before forces on western border was more in a role of counter insurgency, after the orders of chief it will fully transform them into border security force.

A member of armed services once told me that forces on western border never have the capability to take down air vehicles, which means they were not authorized to use SAM's & GTAM's. US/ISAF are using HH-60 or Bell 412 helicopters which can be easily taken down by Pakistan made MANPAD's such as Anza Mk 2.

The real problem will be after the "escalation" if ISAF/US send air force fighters what will Pakistan do. Game of nerves, crossing fingers.

This is good and very good move, now i am sure the Jawans and officers of the army will answer all our concern regarding their capability to answer!!!

Re: Pakistan military ordered to return fire if attacked by Nato forces

^^^ I'm not sure we know what we are doing. Pakistan is in fragile state & we should not be taking on a super power with military budget of half of the entire world. Having said that, Pakistan does have the ability to make US/NATO lives very miserable in Afghanistan, but the question is at what cost?

To live a day like a tiger is far more precious than living a hundred years like a jackal.

Re: Pakistan military ordered to return fire if attacked by Nato forces

Troops have been ordered to defend themselves if they come under attack. The order isn't of offensive nature. In any case, the other option is to sit like a duck and get killed.

Wah ji wah what a glorious life of a Tiger/Lion we’ve been living and continue to do so … masha’Allah :smack:

Re: Pakistan military ordered to return fire if attacked by Nato forces

Interesting development, but to avoid any confusion or repetition of this kind of activity in the future Pakistan should ban the American forces from attacking places within Pakistan (through aircrafts or drones) as any miscommunication and confusion would quickly create an explosive situation.

Pakistan to install air defence system at Pak-Afghan border
According to Dunya News, a comprehensive strategy has been devised to counter any future NATO attack from Afghanistan. The communication between Pakistan Army and Pakistan Air Force will also be improved in case of any military assault from western borders, Dunya News learnt.%between%

publicity stunt by military leadership..

Re: Pakistan military ordered to return fire if attacked by Nato forces

We can't take on ISAF that is for certain. The question is what do we do if we can't take them on a fight?

Re: Pakistan military ordered to return fire if attacked by Nato forces

Leave the borders to them and withdraw, because at the moment even the presence of the forces is not working.

Re: Pakistan military ordered to return fire if attacked by Nato forces

That just gives them chance to make us the next Iraq or Afghanistan. Does not bode well for us at all.

Re: Pakistan military ordered to return fire if attacked by Nato forces

Thats probably not a terrible idea, whats the worst that is going to happen? Pak will be blamed for NOT doing enough to control the flow of talibs on Afghan-Pak border?........seems like the same rant as last ten or so years to me.
