Pakistan food prices too high: UN

In summary, the UN is saying that it is the present government responsible for extremely high food prices, and it does not want to acknowledge this fact.
Because of high food prices malnutrition is on the rise.

That’s exactly the problem with Pakistanis. We argue politics so much that we overlook what actually matters to people.

GENEVA: Pakistan’s government has pushed food prices too high for its impoverished population and malnutrition is rising despite crop recovery after dire floods, a UN relief official said Wednesday.

Food crops especially wheat in the southern plains hit by last year’s floods were recovering fast with the prospect of decent yields in coming weeks, said World Food Programme (WFP) director in Pakistan, Wolfgang Herbinger.

“The crop outlook is not bad but the food security situation remains difficult because prices remain so high,” he told journalists on the sidelines of humanitarian meetings in Geneva.

The government is the biggest buyer of wheat in Pakistan they are setting the farm gate price and they dominate market,” Herbinger said.

“That’s why the wheat price in Pakistan didn’t adjust when, for example, in 2009 and early 2010 the wheat price had gone back a lot, it stayed high to the detriment of local consumers.”

People paid double the price for wheat compared to three years ago and the food security situation has “changed dramatically,” the WFP official added.

Malnutrition levels in the southern province of Sindh had reached 21 to 23 per cent, according to the agency.

“That is well above African standards. The emergency standard is 15 per cent,” the WFP official said.

A recent survey found that in some flood-hit areas 70 per cent of people were taking out loans to pay for food.

You may have the country full with food but people are too poor to buy it,” he said.

The WFP was “struggling a bit” to get the message across, he said.

“**We are working a lot with the ministry of agriculture to explain to the minister that it is not enough to have enough production in the country if people can’t afford it.”

“Maybe for political reasons he doesn’t always understand it,** that it’s one thing to be nice to the farmers but if your consumers can’t afford it then it’s… So there’s something wrong with agricultural policy,” Herbinger added.

Massive floods caused by monsoon rains in July and August 2010 killed thousands, destroyed 1.7 million homes and damaged 5.4 million acres of arable land, experts have said.

Re: Pakistan food prices too high: UN

On my recent visit meat has become very expensive. Many times I opted for non-meat options to budget. When you eat out not only food prices are more but servings are smaller!

Re: Pakistan food prices too high: UN

Its all Punjab's and N-League and imran khan's fault.......:D

Re: Pakistan food prices too high: UN

Yeah and some greedy sods are hoarding supplies while people starve. It’s not that our country cannot produce enough… Punjab could once provide for all Hindustan so what’s the problem now?

The rich get fat and the poor starve. Same as always… but how long will they push people like cattle, wont take much for a stampede even a rare lightning bolt has just the right power to cause a revolution. :jhanda:

Re: Pakistan food prices too high: UN

Catch 22 - world bank and IMF says "increase tax collection and end subsidies"; UN says food prices are too high.

Let's just ask UNHCR to draft a "final solution" for poor.

Re: Pakistan food prices too high: UN

This is the kind of mentality responsible for economic woes of the country. Racist provincialism. Focusing more on political parties rather than sufferings of common people.

There are some people who live outside of Pakistan and care less about poverty in Pakistan. When someone even mentions these woes then their response is sarcasm and laughter.

Re: Pakistan food prices too high: UN

IMF and world bank will say this because they invested money in the country and now they want it back one way or another.
By the way, I don't think increased tax collection has anything to do with rising food prices.

Re: Pakistan food prices too high: UN

Problem is that such greedy hoarders are present in both major political parties. Be it PPP or PML.
So it does not matter whose government is there. These people work together to create cartels and artificial food crises.

Re: Pakistan food prices too high: UN

What I noticed was that prices of many commodities are very close to prices in the US, after converting from Rs to dollar. Which is scary because people in Pakistan obviously earn much much less than those in the US, and yet have to pay similar price.
Even after paying price comparable to a developed country, the quality is still much inferior. So it is a double blow.

Re: Pakistan food prices too high: UN

Ironically, we had more rule of law in domestic matters with a dictator who was not answerable to people compared to a democracy. Since dictatorships don't work in Pakistan, it is time people buckle up for bad times as democracy takes its sweet time to fix things.

Re: Pakistan food prices too high: UN

you forgot MQM..eh??

Re: Pakistan food prices too high: UN

Lets be fair that sugar mafia or wheat mafia is not the voting block for MQM.

Re: Pakistan food prices too high: UN

Idiots in Pakistan never plan for food security. They have no guidelines & proper framework apart from before partition blue book rules setup by British, it's high time someone grow balls and try to change it.

On a serious note, i believe MQM is behind it. Just like after the "bahaali of Chief Justice" the law & order situation is corrected and all the talibanic menace is gone. Same way if Military operation starts in Karachi and all the MQM-goons can be publicly hanged, food prices will be improved.

Re: Pakistan food prices too high: UN

:hehe:

Re: Pakistan food prices too high: UN

You don't seem to have any idea of Pakistani society. tsk tsk.
What does MQM, an urban party, have to do with food cartels and hoarders?
Such people are mostly landlords and industrialists dealing with food commodities. And they are mostly the members of PPP and PML.

Re: Pakistan food prices too high: UN

U might have posted this as sarcasm but fact is that PML(N) has Punjab's govt so you can not free them of responsibility. Any party that is either in Govt or in coalition is responsible to some extent.

As for Imran, uss becharey ki koi haisiyat nahi hai k he can do good or bad ....

Re: Pakistan food prices too high: UN

yaara aap ney phir aag laga di :hehe:

now watch, how PTI keyboard warriors will solve the food security crises, guess what the solutions will be found directly inside the speeches Imran Khan made before & after the cricket matches in 80s, beat that … - this man posses some supernatural powers, Imran Bahi was flying over the land of Pakistan as an angel/spirit even before the partition, my gs friends he knew all the problems & troubles we are going to face with the existence of that fat cartoon known as Altaf Bahi .. but oh well …

Re: Pakistan food prices too high: UN

BBC reports that the Pakistan governnment argues that if it cut the price at which it buys wheat, farmers would switch from wheat to more profitable crops instead.

And on top of that, smuggling would increase as smugglers could make bigger profits sneaking out cheap Pakistani wheat to other markets where prices remain high.

Both of these would worsen food shortages in Pakistan.

Re: Pakistan food prices too high: UN

Controlling smuggling is the government's responsibility.

Re: Pakistan food prices too high: UN

It's Pakistani democracy at work.
