^^^ Painting Tips: for Dummies ^^^

Sorry, I just wanted to use that title for the thread :cb:

Tips taken from my Blog on AD when I made them last year:

Tip # 1 - First and most important, make sure you have the right supplies if you really want to learn painting or improve your paintings skillz.

Tip # 2 - You always wanna start with the objects that are the furthest (in the background). Almost everytime it is the sky so start with the sky.

Tip # 3 - When doing things like Mountain or Grass, make sure that you have a dark color underneath before you apply the light colors on top. Because when you have a dark color underneath, you will be able to see the lighter color when you apply the highlights.

Tip # 4 - Remember one Golden Rule whenever you paint anything, “Light shows against Dark & Dark shows against Light.”

Tip # 5 - When doing night scenes or scenes which doesn’t have too much light, it is best to cover the entire canvas with Black Gesso (a primer that dries within 10-15 minutes & is used to paint canvas before painting) and you will be amazed with the results.

Tip # 6 - To do Rocks instantly, take a small brush (that has small bristles such as the size of your nail) and cover both sides with dark color (usually it is brown or dark grey) and then take one side and simply cover it with a light color (usually light brown or light grey;** make sure** it is same color as dark one except much much brighter). Now, turn the side (with light color) up and the side (with dark color) down and make the basic shape of Rocks (usually the shape resembles the top-half of the letter ‘C’) and instantly you’ll get Rocks with the shadow color (dark color) at bottom and the parts of Rocks where the light hits at top. The same can be done to make the tree trunk except this time you would have dark color on your left or right side instead of bottom. If you have dark color on left side, then you would have light color (on one side of the brush) on your right side of brush.

Tip # 7 - I would suggest that you use Oil Paints as that Paint does not dry even if you were to paint the whole day as compared to Acrylic (which dries within 5-10 minutes). Another advantage of Oil Paint is that it moves like butter so you can move it or mix it any way you want and can even correct your mistakes right at the spot (if you make any).

Tip # 8 - Do not add too much detail to the things in the background such as distant trees or bushes. I find it best to use color such as light grey to make distant trees/bushes as that is a bright color. This does not mean that you just make random things as your background bushes/trees. Have a basic shape but do not apply colors such as green on it if it is far back.

Tip # 9 - When doing water, it is always good to drag a small portion of that same color straight down to make it look like reflection (if it’s a shiny day). For this reason, I say use Oil Paint because it is easier to slide it to make instant reflection!

Tip # 10 - Finally, MOST IMPORTANT, don’t forget to Sign your painting!

Hope you found these tips helpful. If I think of more, I will try to add it later on. For any questions, you can post here or PM me :k:

Re: ^^^ Painting Tips: for Dummies ^^^

would you mind sharing: names and pricing range of all the supplies you use :chai:

ps. kool thread. (i will also contribute to it :shoaby:)

Re: ^^^ Painting Tips: for Dummies ^^^

Absolutely. Each and every of the supplies I use have a different purpose which they serve. Investing money into these will definitely be worth it if you take good care of those supplies. I have invested money into my supplies and I knew they would pay off. Now I don’t have to run to the Art Store to buy supplies everytime I want to paint because I have all the supplies at home and have my own mini studio

Here’s the list (the prices may vary from place to place). I have arranged them in accordance with the numbers in the picture (hence, #1 in list is talking about brush #1 in picture):

#1 - 1" Round Brush - $15+
#2 - Half Round Brush - $10+
#3 - 2" Landscape Brush - $15+
#4 - 2" Soft Blender Brush - $15+
#5 - 1" Landscape Brush - $10+
#6 - 1" Oval Brush - $15+
#7 - Script Liner Brush - $7+
#8 - Filbert Brush - $9+
#9 - Small Fan Brush - $6+
10 - Large Fan brush - $8+
#11 - Large Knife - $11+
12 - Small Knife - $11+

You also would want to invest in things like Cleaning Bucket, Brush Beater Rack, Turpenoid Odorless Paint Thinner etc. DO NOT clean your supplies with water. Use Paint Thinner instead to clean them. As for the oil paints, each tube (1.25 oz) costs me about $4-5.

In addition, I also bought an easel, which is sold for about $200 for under $70 so that was pretty lucky. As for the Pallette, I know a guy near my place who was nice enough to make me one for free and save me $30 :p. I drew the shape and size (15x20 in.) for him and he made it out of clear Plexi Glass. :phati:

Re: ^^^ Painting Tips: for Dummies ^^^

my sibz gift me easel :phati: (it is made up of wood :@:)…and i love it :yahoo:

for the brushes…i got for $35 (as a deal from painting class :phati:)…which i think is also a good deal…7 brushes

where as for palate knives…i went with the disposable ones. i think the package have 6-8 different shapes knife. (except for the squarish one. its a metal one)…25 dollars

for the palette, i actually bought a palette book (you dont have to do the cleaning :phati:)…$12-15 (25 pages i think )

for my paints. i actually bought it from direct retailers-manufacturers and it cost me around ($200 for 17-19 tubes)…which i also think is a pretty deal :phati:

and lastly my course…$850 (i think…but its around that :hinna:)

Re: ^^^ Painting Tips: for Dummies ^^^

Tip # 11 - Always take good care of your brush and clean them with Paint Thinner when you are done painting. Paint thinner can be purchased from any local art store and is used to clean brushes but also can be used to make paint a little thinner (as thin as ink to make things like tree trunk etc) AND can be used to clean ur clothes if paint falls on it.

Tip # 12 - Buying 2 or 3 of the same brushes will save you a lot of time and paint because you will not have to clean the brush everytime you want to use it for a different purpose on the same painting. For this reason, purchase atleast 2 of the same brushes and simply clean them at end of painting rather than in the middle to use it again and again.

Tip # 13- There is this thing called Cleaning Bucket and Screen. The screen is placed at bottom of paint bucket and then Paint Thinner is poured in it. Now everytime you clean your brush against the Screen, it’ll trap the paint in it. When you are done painting, leave the bucket overnight and look at it the next morning. All the paint will sink to the bottom, thus, giving you relatively new Paint Thinner to work with. You can do this many times before you clean your bucket and pour in new Paint Thinner. To save money, you can also use a normal metal can or any other bucket but make sure it is not too big but** is** big enough to hold the screen at bottom.

my sibz gift me easel :phati: (it is made up of wood :@:)…and i love it :yahoo:
hehe that’s nice. Mines is made out of metal and is much better than the $300+ ones out there. that is why I was quick to reserve it and buy it the next day because that easel costs a lot of money and I didn’t want to miss out on the chance because they only had one and it is rare to find.

where as for palate knives…i went with the disposable ones. i think the package have 6-8 different shapes knife. (except for the squarish one. its a metal one)…25 dollars
Don’t buy the disposable ones. You could’ve bought nice permanent metal ones with $25.

for the palette, i actually bought a palette book (you dont have to do the cleaning :phati:)…$12-15 (25 pages i think )
Again, go with the real one. You may think you are saving money right now but in long run, you are actually losing it. Just buy a real one or go to your nearest lumbar yard or something and tell them to make you one out of plexi glass. I say Plexi Glass because it lets you see the colors easily and is really really light.

for my paints. i actually bought it from direct retailers-manufacturers and it cost me around ($200 for 17-19 tubes)…which i also think is a pretty deal :phati:
That’s nice. I have my tubes right now and the colors which I don’t have, I just mix the other ones and make them. But I think I am gonna purchase a whole set one more time very soon :hmmm:

Re: ^^^ Painting Tips: for Dummies ^^^

^ have you use palette book :smack:

i have used all these wood bla kinda…palette books are the best one! :snooty:

-nah—i gonna go with disposble one cuz i never used them so far :@:. let me practice with them and then i gonna spend more bucks.

ps. besides this is not the only course i am taking :smilestar: "dont ask me about photography supply :hayaa: :hinna:…i just bought 10 ***** photo papers for $30 on discount "

  • I AM NOT ONLY GHREEB (poor), BUT ALSO BAYROZGAR (unemployed)…so not as rich as you are :snooty:

Re: ^^^ Painting Tips: for Dummies ^^^

And that $12-15 could’ve bought you a real one instead of the book :smilestar:

And if you are going to use Oil, please do not use wooden pallette :smack:
