Sorry, I just wanted to use that title for the thread ![]()
Tips taken from my Blog on AD when I made them last year:
Tip # 1 - First and most important, make sure you have the right supplies if you really want to learn painting or improve your paintings skillz.
Tip # 2 - You always wanna start with the objects that are the furthest (in the background). Almost everytime it is the sky so start with the sky.
Tip # 3 - When doing things like Mountain or Grass, make sure that you have a dark color underneath before you apply the light colors on top. Because when you have a dark color underneath, you will be able to see the lighter color when you apply the highlights.
Tip # 4 - Remember one Golden Rule whenever you paint anything, “Light shows against Dark & Dark shows against Light.”
Tip # 5 - When doing night scenes or scenes which doesn’t have too much light, it is best to cover the entire canvas with Black Gesso (a primer that dries within 10-15 minutes & is used to paint canvas before painting) and you will be amazed with the results.
Tip # 6 - To do Rocks instantly, take a small brush (that has small bristles such as the size of your nail) and cover both sides with dark color (usually it is brown or dark grey) and then take one side and simply cover it with a light color (usually light brown or light grey;** make sure** it is same color as dark one except much much brighter). Now, turn the side (with light color) up and the side (with dark color) down and make the basic shape of Rocks (usually the shape resembles the top-half of the letter ‘C’) and instantly you’ll get Rocks with the shadow color (dark color) at bottom and the parts of Rocks where the light hits at top. The same can be done to make the tree trunk except this time you would have dark color on your left or right side instead of bottom. If you have dark color on left side, then you would have light color (on one side of the brush) on your right side of brush.
Tip # 7 - I would suggest that you use Oil Paints as that Paint does not dry even if you were to paint the whole day as compared to Acrylic (which dries within 5-10 minutes). Another advantage of Oil Paint is that it moves like butter so you can move it or mix it any way you want and can even correct your mistakes right at the spot (if you make any).
Tip # 8 - Do not add too much detail to the things in the background such as distant trees or bushes. I find it best to use color such as light grey to make distant trees/bushes as that is a bright color. This does not mean that you just make random things as your background bushes/trees. Have a basic shape but do not apply colors such as green on it if it is far back.
Tip # 9 - When doing water, it is always good to drag a small portion of that same color straight down to make it look like reflection (if it’s a shiny day). For this reason, I say use Oil Paint because it is easier to slide it to make instant reflection!
Tip # 10 - Finally, MOST IMPORTANT, don’t forget to Sign your painting! ![]()
Hope you found these tips helpful. If I think of more, I will try to add it later on. For any questions, you can post here or PM me :k:
