Our Ironing Board - The Dearly Departed

I loved our old, simple but very useful ironing board. It served us for well over a decade. In fact, maybe longer because I don’t even remember when we purchased it.

Recently my daughter tried to use it and while putting it away something didn’t quite work and now it’s all bent out of shape; stripped of it’s padded cover, waiting for the next waste collection day to be put in front of the house on it’s final journey to ironing board heaven.

I assumed that my grief would be mitigated by a quickly resolved search at the local WalMart…but no. I was completely floored to find that the only model at my local store was a super-duper, deluxe model that is extra-wide and has an iron stand attached to the side. It’s heavy and cumbersome to store and to top it off comes at a cost of $49.99 plus tax. Add to it the fact that the old but perfectly useful cover from my dearly departed model will not fit, so a new one will need to be purchased at an additional $34.99.

Really? Is replacing an ironing board really that expensive now? Am I just being dramatic?

I decided to do some research. Believe it or not I found an ironing board online for $399.99. Okay…so it has features…but $400??? Who buys this stuff?

Tell me about your ironing board.
Help me deal with the grief. I have accepted but I still feel pangs of anxiety when I go to the store to purchase a new one…

Re: Our Ironing Board - The Dearly Departed

^ Same ordeal happened to us but 3-4 months back and actually it was hubby’s university days ka ironing board, and off we went looking for another one thinking 'how much can be an ironing board possibly cost? and to our surprise there were only two one was $34.99 and another for $119.99 :open_mouth: Didn’t have the energy to look to shop around with the crying kids and naturally we came back with the $35 dollar + the $20 padding cover (since hubby told me he never knew what a padding cover was so never bought it for the old ironing board) and all along I was using a bed sheet all this time give it a lift :hehe:

We bought ours at Bed bath & beyond. Here is to another 15 years :biggthumb:

Re: Our Ironing Board - The Dearly Departed

^ true! we had the same dilemma a few years ago and were flabbergasted at the prices! i guess its a long term investment

Re: Our Ironing Board - The Dearly Departed

I got mine for $30 at Ikea a few months ago. It’s well built, folds easily.

Re: Our Ironing Board - The Dearly Departed

yeah have you tried ikea? I haven’t bought a board but I bought a very nice cover (with the foam padding INCLUDED) for £4.99 from there - very cheap!

Re: Our Ironing Board - The Dearly Departed

IKEA is a great idea! I haven’t checked them out.

That video is funny Cheegs…leave it to you to know of a comedic video on this subject. :smack:

Re: Our Ironing Board - The Dearly Departed

Was it the old one that had the criss cross legs?

We still have ours…Allah Tala usko lambi umar ata karein…Ameen.

Please don’t tell me they don’t make them anymore :frowning:

Muzna, I replaced my ironing board with the 79 buck wide yet light ironing board and put a heat reflective cover on it. Over time the convenience far outweighs the initial cost difference.

I was going to get one of them steam press ones for a few hundred but I did not, only because I am lazy and could t be bothered and often start things that I don’t get to

You guys are crazy if you’re using more than thirty dollars.

I can by an expensive iron, but not an expensive ironing board.

Re: Our Ironing Board - The Dearly Departed

Walmart has one for $22. I wouldn’t pay more than that. It’s going to get stained and burnt over time, anyway.

Re: Our Ironing Board - The Dearly Departed

What about istaris? how much should those cost?

We have a panasonic ki istari that cost a couple of bills and a steamer for $100…but ever almost 7 years later they are going strong :k:

What do you use steamer for rg?

Dekho TLK baqordaar,(yes I am channeling qazi wajid..desi wilford brimley) not everything needs to be burnt to a crisp on ain ironing table. Some things of better with steaming, not just for delicate clothing, or things with a little nap of velvet fabric, or felt, or cashmere or angora, but even heavier fabrics like tweeds and cords do better with steaming and the steam to be the only heat rather than steaming with an iron.

Plus many gandee badboodar aunties to be (real soon) don’t wash their clothes like you or I, hell half the clothing by bunto and deepak and dr darzi and fulani B and Fulani c…can’t be washed…can’t be dry cleaned, and sweating after dancing like bandaryaas at some run of the mill mehndi and living Bollywood dreams that way, then attacking biryani and tikkas…the clothes smell baaaaad.

So one way to sort it out is to air them, in direct sunlight and pray they don’t fade…because yet again, desi designer crud is just that…crud. So steaming is one of the only options.

And with that I have painted a target on my head for all GS ladies, but the truth shall not be silenced!!! Attica!!! Attica!!! (No it’s not atiqa ya fobs… Context context)

Plus I will be busy and by the time I home back they would be infighting as usual anyways.

Why? If the water in the iron is clean, the iron is a quality iron that will not spill water, and the clothes are ironed properly why would it stain or burn?

Muzna I have used sturdy less wide tables as ironing boards with those thick bedsheets and it has worked like a charm.

TLK bhai, pls share what reflective cover you have bought and from where.

Also I’m already contemplationg buying a third iron. I’m just very very dissatisfied with north American isstaree. The clothes just don’t come out sharp or crisp enough.

Chacha jaan X2, I agree with what you said about steaming, but almost any iron over 40 has a feature that gives a steam burst that you can use on a fabric without letting the iron touch the fabric, and it works great. I know because that is what I use on my suits, especially on the sleeves of the coat if it’s wrinkled. I just hang the coat and take my iron and few burst of steam later, it’s done. I dont see the need of a dedicated steamer
