Nikah is a way better replacement for Engagement.
No legal status
Waste of money
Puts two lives in the middle of have/have not
More chances of committing a sin
Its just an adopted cultural norm.

I was engaged for one year before getting married , I and my wife's family wanted some time to prepare for our wedding. Wedding is a big occasion , those days when this used to be a very simple affair are long gone.

once engagement takes place, expectations start rising up, expectations of partners with each other, of families with each other, and eventually, sometimes either of the party fails to accept the relation anymore... luckily a few percent marriages like this, succeed.

Einstein , how do you know that only a few percentage of marriages after engagement were successful ? Where did you get your percentages from ?
