Ali was talking to Irrum almost everyday. He also started convincing his parents that he was set to marry Irrum so they should simply accept it. His parents had their firm stand that they would not accept Irrum for him. Ali and Irrum started planning for their wedding as well. Irrum wanted the wedding to take place in Florida while Ali wanted to do that in New York. Irrum’s mom was also in favor of wedding to take place in New York as most of her family lived in New York. Irrum was being stubborn and insisted to do the function in Florida. She even had some arguments with her mom and told her to go ahead and marry Ali herself if she wanted to do the function in New York. Ali definitely did not like Irrum’s attitude in this matter. He was upset with her and told her his clear stance that he was doing the function in New York only.

He was having serious talks with his parents in the meantime to convince them. His sister with her husband came to US for visit and he had them meet Irrum. It seemed that his whole family was set on "No" for Irrum. Ali went to Florida on thanksgiving weekend and spent few days with Irrum. After he came back to New York he started having some weird feelings towards her. He had gotten the feeling that he did have rushed into doing Nikah with Irrum. During Christmas time, he went to Florida again and spent few days with Irrum to see if he could sort things out. This time Irrum and her family asked Ali, to plan for the wedding. They decided to do the function in May 1995. Ali went on agreeing with them even though he was really not sure what to do. He wasn’t sure if he really wanted to marry her. He started feeling depressed and stayed quiet all the time. Even at work his colleagues saw change in his behavior. His close friends at work got worried and wanted to find out what happened. He opened up with them and told them how he did not want to marry Irrum while he had already set the date for his wedding. He told them how he was wishing to die in order to come out of that commitment. Being social workers, those colleagues felt sympathy for him and told him to take firm stand and don’t get into this wedding if he did not have feelings for the girl anymore. He did not feel love for Irrum anymore. He told them that he could not say no to her family at that point. It was too late. He could only come out of that wedding only if he died or Irrum died.

Bebe did not know anything about all this as Ali had stopped sharing anything with her. These other co-worker girls who were good friends of Ali, really had some long talks with him. They told him that he was going to ruin two lives by doing that marriage. If he did not love Irrum, he should have not married to her was the conclusion they all reached to, but Ali was either too weak or too nice to say no. He was getting into disastrous marriage just because he had done the commitment to Irrum’s family and had already done the Nikah. He was not sharing his feelings with Irrum on the phone either. He was being distant with her as time was passing by. Irrum was confused and was worried about him. She did not know what was going on with him. She tried to find out but he was not being helpful. Now it was February of 1995 and there were about three months left in their wedding. Irrum took a flight and came to New York in order to do straighten things out and also do preperations for the wedding. She had to pick her wedding dress/jewelry, furniture, other household things for her new home, and more importantly venue for her wedding. Ali went along with Irrum to do all those things even though his heart wasn’t into them. They finalized a hall and menu. They ordered her wedding dress and bought jewelry. They ordered new furniture for the new apartment Ali had just rented. Irrum spent about two weeks in New York staying with her uncle. She had made sure to do all the preparation for the wedding. They got their invitation cards printed as well.

The function was to be held under Afghani culture. There was live music band booked to come from Virginia. Live music is the essential part of Afghan weddings. She had picked a white wedding dress. Ali had now informed his parents that the date was set for the wedding and he had already done the Nikah. This was shocking news for them but they had no choice but to accept it. They either had to disown Ali or just accept his wife. His father and sister with her husband were still here in the US and they planned to attend the wedding. Ali’s rest of the family was still in Pakistan and they were not going to make it for the wedding. Two weeks before the wedding Irrum and her mom arrived to New York. Her mom went to see the banquet hall and rejected it. She asked Ali to cancel it and get a bigger hall. Ali was luckily able to find a bigger hall just two weeks before the wedding. He changed the catering vendor to be an Afghan restaurant. This new banquet hall and food was costing Ali about $60 per person that was on a high side for his affordability. Besides, being an Afghan style wedding, 100% cost of it was being paid by Ali that he did not mind, as he was aware of Afghan culture well in advance. They had informed all their guests with the venue change. Ali did all the preparation with a confused state of mind. He was doing it all yet not sure if this was in his best interest. He did not love Irrum anymore but was hoping to develop the love once gotten married.

Finally it was the Mehndi night and Ali’s family and friends took the Mehndi to Irrum’s place at her uncle’s home. They danced and had good time there. Next day was probably the most important day of Ali’s life. It was his wedding day, Ali entered in the stretched limousine for the first time in his life to go to the banquet hall. He had three more limousines booked for his other guest. He excitedly arrived at the wedding hall along with his other Barratties. Irrum had not made to the hall yet. So Ali took the center stage alone until Irrum arrived. When Irrum arrived, Ali went to the doorway to receive her and then walked her to the stage. Band played a special song in Farsi when they were entering the hall and walking to the stage. It was very sentimental for Irrum and Ali also felt it and got involved in it. They both took few minutes to take their seats at the stage; this was an Afghan custom to be the second one to sit down. So they settled to sit down simultaneously in the clapping of the entire hall. It was indeed a wonderful day for both of them. Irrum looked like a fairy in her white dress and well made up with beautiful hairstyle. Ali had many friends invited to the wedding including Wasif and Bebe. They were all having a good time and dancing on the live music. Afghans must dance on a wedding party, so they were all dancing in their particular style. They all enjoyed good Afghan food as well. There was a nice three-tiered cake that Irrum and Ali had cut. Function ended late at night. Ali brought Irrum his home in the limousine. His friends had made a beautiful Masehri for him. Ali and Irrum both were excited for their Suhag Raat.
