Ali came back to US per his schedule. The same day he came back, Irrum called him and asked him if he had gotten married. Ali told her that he was the same as he was before going to Pakistan. She also asked him if he had gotten engaged in Pakistan. Ali said, “No, that has not happened either. May be we are meant for each other.” What a relief Irrum had gotten from Ali’s answer. She was overly pleased and happy. She told him how much she had missed him and how she could not stay away from him anymore. She expressed her desire to relocate to New York so that he would not mistrust her anymore. Ali wasn’t too sure about that so he told her to relax and not to rush into it. He did not know if he could commit himself with her. She kept on insisting in her every call that she did not want to live in Phoenix anymore and wanted to move to New York right away.
It was summer of 1994. She was not taking any classes instead was just working at Albertson temporarily. She did not want to register for the fall semester at ASU anymore. She told Ali that she was moving to New York on her own if he could not help her to do so. She really wanted Ali to come to Phoenix and accompany her to drive from Phoenix to New York. Ali finally agreed to go to Phoenix to bring her with him. It was towards the end of summer when Ali flew to Phoenix and spent a night there. He had planned to leave for New York early next morning by road. He was surprised to find out that Irrum’s car’s registration as well as insurance was expired and she had been driving around with expired license plates. Next morning, they started the day early, got the car washed, went to the Jiffy Lube for quick oil change to make sure that the car would make it for the long drive ahead. Checked and topped off all the fluids in the car. They packed all of Irrum’s personal belongings and stuffed them in the car and left at about 10:00 AM.
Irrum was excited to leave with Ali and had not even told her mother about this big move. When Ali found out, he got upset and told her to call her mom right away. They stopped at a service area and called her mom from the payphone. Her mom was all surprised and angry at her strange decision. She asked Ali to do her a big favor and not to take Irrum at his place, rather take her to at her brother’s home. Irrum had 4 uncles (mamoN) who lived in New York and one of them was not married yet and her mom wanted her to stay with him temporarily until further plans. During their long drive, they spent only one night at some motel on the way. Towards the end of their road trip they were extremely lucky to survive a horrible accident. They had stopped at some rest area in Pennsylvania at about four in the morning for a little nap and two hours later, Ali woke up and realized it was getting late in order to reach New York City early in the day. He took off while he was still sleepy and Irrum was also asleep on the passenger seat. Within 30 minutes, Ali fell asleep on the steering wheel and went off the highway on the uphill. From the trembling and noise he woke up and steered the car all the way to the left, car came down and went back on the highway and hit the divider while spinning backward. Now Irrum was awaked too and started screaming. Car finally landed on the shoulder facing backward. Irrum thought, car had jumped from the other side of the divider. There was some damage to the sides of the car, but it was still movable. Luckily at that early hour of the morning, there wasn’t any traffic on the highway; else they would have gone to some absolute rest.
When they reached the city it was about 10:00 am, Ali went straight to an Insurance agent and got the insurance. Then he went to the DMV in order to get the car registered. After getting the valid registration and new license plates, he felt much better. Then he took Irrum to her uncle’s home and met the guy for the first time. Her mom had already spoken to him and told him that Irrum was on her way to come stay with him temporarily. Ali was pleasantly surprised to meet this guy who was really a kind gentleman. Within a week, Ali took Irrum to his college and had her registered for the fall semester. This was Ali’s last semester at college. He was happy that they both were going to go to the same school.
Ali had come back from Pakistan with a cleaner heart and somewhat disappointed with his parents towards that Nikah arrangement they had made and how it was ended. He took the whole thing in its context and considered it was meant to be that way. He further thought that he was probably meant to get together with Irrum. He was trying to forget about their past and move on with a fresh start. He was considering marrying her in the coming months after making sure that things between them were going in good direction. He had soon announced to his parents about his plan. They were definitely not happy and started persuading him to give up the idea. His father came to visit and talk to him in this regard. Ali was very persistent and told his parents how they had failed to do his arranged marriage and that was probably in his best interests. He brought Irrum home to let his father meet her. His father refused to accept her just for the matter that she wasn’t a Pakistani girl. The family was persistent that he should marry only a Pakistani girl. Ali kept trying to talk to his mom in Pakistan on daily basis and tried to convince his dad. Nothing seemed to be working out for him.
This was fall 1994; Ali and Irrum had started their school and were quite happy to be together. Ali would pick Irrum from her uncle’s place and take her to school and then drop her back at her place in the evening. This arrangement went on for two months. Irrum kept asking Ali to decide on marrying her as she was under a lot of pressure from her family not to stay in New York anymore. All of a sudden Irrum told Ali that she wanted to move back to Florida, as her mom wanted her to do so. Her mom was suspected of Ali’s intentions and told Irrum that he would probably have not married her as long as he was getting a free ride with her. Irrum decided to drop all her classes at the college in New York and requested Ali once again to help her to move to Florida. She also asked him to do some solid commitment in form of engagement or Nikah. It was a tough choice for Ali. His family was in total rejection of the idea. He himself had enough pain from Irrum in the past and wasn’t sure whether Irrum would be a right choice for him. He then decided to take her back to Florida and do Nikah during the trip. He was going to try to convince his parents in the meantime and do the proper reception for their wedding and move her back to New York in few months.
Irrum informed her family about the plan. They arranged a small function for their Nikah to be held in Florida. Towards end of October 1994, Ali took Irrum to Florida, did the Nikah in the presence of about 50 guests, all from Irrum’s side. He did not tell a single person from his family or friends other than Zaki. Zaki could not make to that functions either hence Ali did it all by himself. They were now Islamically married. He spent a night at their home and flew back to New York the next day.
