Online Saga

A simple, long but true story

Once upon a time a guy came to US for studies at a relatively younger age. He was doing his undergrad in Computer Science while working fulltime to support himself. He had never been in any relationship yet and was very curious to find out how it felt. He was doing well in school and was working full-time to support him.

Being a computer Science student, he often spent time in the computer lab for doing his homework or assignment. In 1991 he learnt about “Relay Chat” and IRC chatting done among VM mainframe. In those days, only college students were using these chat programs. There was no Yahoo Messenger on AIM available for people outside the school system.

On one fine Friday evening, March 13, 1992, he was just looking at the lists of people online in the chat room “Pakistan” and saw a nick “Shehzadi” that really attracted him. The real name attached to nick shehzadi was somewhat strange. It seemed half way Pakistani and halfway different. That made him very curious and he sent a Salaam to her but got no response. He then made few more attempts but all in vein. He did not just give up there yet and went ahead to write an email to shehzadi. He expressed his disappointment about not getting any response back. He also asked her for any particular reason she did not respond and what would it had taken her to simply say she was busy and did not want to chat, or whatever. It won’t be wrong to say that the guy had somehow fallen in love with the name and really wanted to talk to the person behind that name. He seemed to be innocently desperate and was trying to get to know the person. Still no reply and now he became really sad. He started thinking about so many assumptions. He questioned himself and then answered those questions himself too but still wasn’t satisfied. Now it was late in the evening, computer lab had to be closed so he left school in a very confused state of mind. He kept thinking about that strange shehzadi on his way home. He did not stop thinking about her even at night and when he went to bed. His entire weekend somehow was spent in her thoughts.

On Monday, he went to school and as usual went to his computer lab. He checked his emails and was disappointed to find no reply from shehzadi. Two days later, on Tuesday when he was on Relay Chat, in chat room “Pakistan”, he gets an exciting “hello” from shehzadi. With the feeling as if he had hit the jackpot, he responded back with hello. She said sorry for not been able to respond earlier. He still wanted to know how come she had not responded to him before. She said that she was actually not on Relay Chat, instead she was kept logged on by the program, may be in the system. She said that she had only seen his email and knew that he was trying to get in touch with her. He then wanted to know how come she had not replied to his email? She said that after reading the email, she had accidentally deleted it and were not able to reply as did not remember the email address. She however had memorized his Relay Chat nick so was looking for him to talk to him. This made him thinking whether this was the real shehzadi or someone simply playing with his mind. So in order to confirm if she was the real person, he asked her about the details of the email he had sent her. She promptly confirmed with everything he had written her. Now he was sure that this was his shehzadi and was overly excited.

About the half Pakistani name, he found out that shehzadi was actually from Afghanistan. Now he was chatting with her everyday for the rest of the week. It was Friday evening, and while chatting with her, he said, “Khuda Hafiz, talk to you tomorrow”. She replied that it was Saturday the next day and they were not be able to chat on the weekend. She said well there was a way to talk over the weekend if he could call her on the phone. Gladly he took her number and promptly called her the next day. First time to hear the voice of someone he had been so excited about was plain heavenly. She indeed had a sweet voice. After talking on the phone for some time, they hanged up with the promise to talk the next day. He called her again on Sunday and they talked for a couple of hours. They both were sending vibes to each other and were enjoying every moment of them talking or chatting. Even though they were about a thousand miles apart from each other yet they felt to be with each other all the time. The guy was living in New York City while his shehzadi was living in Florida. Now they were writing emails to each other few times a day, calling on the phone and chatting online whenever possible. Emotions were developing and a desire to meet each other was arising. It had been about three months for them talking to each other when the guy decided to go and meet her in Florida. He booked his flight for the July 3, 1992 and started counting days to be in Florida. He could not be more excited to see someone he had already fallen in love with. It was the beautiful Friday on July 3, 1992 when he lands at the biggest city of Florida, all nervous but excited.

....continued from the previous

He was so excited to meet the girl for the first time. They had not even seen pictures of each other yet. The moment plane landed, he rushed out of the gate and started walking towards the baggage claim area. Being the largest city of Florida, Jacksonville had a relatively smaller airport and there weren’t many people around. While he was walking towards the baggage claim/ground transportation, he passed by a beautiful girl who was walking towards the opposite direction. Being nervous and uncertain, he doesn’t stop by the girl, yet passes few steps and then looked back. To his surprise the girl was also looking back. Then they both returned to walk towards each other simultaneously. When confronted, she asked, “Ali?” He nodded yes and asked back, “Irrum?” She simply landed herself into his arms and they surely got lost in the heaven for few moments. He was still looking into her eyes to see the brightness and similar satisfaction that he was feeling. He took her to car rental, picked his rental car and then followed her towards the hotel that was very close to her home. While exiting the airport she entered into an oncoming ramp probably being nervous but luckily there was no oncoming traffic at the time. That made him almost faint but he did not follow her and kept going the right way. Here they lost each other. Ali had a map with him and had already planned his route from the airport to the hotel.

In about 30 minutes he arrived at the hotel and was pleased to see that Irram had already arrived there and was parked in front of the hotel waiting for him. She had also picked her sister on the way. She came out of her car and went along Ali to check-in. After he put his stuff in the room, she then told him to follow her to her home. He obliged and went to her home that was nearby. He was welcome by her mother and rest of the family. Her mother had previously known about the plan and had cooked a grand feast for dinner. They all had dinner and talked about general stuff. Mother assured Ali that he was welcome to the Afghan home. After dinner Ali went to his hotel and to his surprise Irrum followed him to the hotel. At the hotel, they talked about so many things while holding hands of each other. Ali was very respectful of the fact that she trusted him all along and did not show any reservation towards being with him alone. He kissed her on her forehead and expressed his utter satisfaction of the meeting. While they were talking, time flew so fast and before they realized it was midnight. She worriedly wanted to leave at once that he did not mind. Ali spent the night at the hotel probably dreaming about his shehzadi all night long.

Next day, Irrum called Ali at about 11:00 am and told him how her mom was so upset at her for staying with him till that late. She told him that she could not out the house to meet him that day. Her mom had gone to work and she told her not to go out at all. Ali was upset and worried but was hopeful that he could talk to her mom in the evening when she came home. They both did stay on the phone talking to each other the whole day. In the evening when her mom came home, Ali talked to her and apologized to her for keeping Irrum with him till late. He took it all upon him and told her that Irrum wanted to leave but he kept talking to her. He also assured her that she could trust him towards the sanity of her daughter and he would not do cross his/her limits. Mom was pleased after the conversation and invited him over for the dinner. He gladly went there, had dinner and met his shehzadi in the process. He stayed at their home till late, talking to the family and getting to know them. He was really impressed with them and was already feeling very comfortable.

He spent another night at the hotel and next day Irrum was allowed to take him around the city. Her sisters accompanied them and they went to all landmark places in the city. He was enjoying every bit of his tip. Tonight was his last night there and he went to their home again. He assured the mother again that she could trust him and her daughter with her eyes closed and they were not going to do anything wrong. Mother was happy to meet Ali and hoped for the best for him. Being conservative, she was still an open-minded woman and wanted them both to get to know each and see what’s laid in there for them. If they really liked each other and wanted to be together then she had no problem in them getting married. She however explained her expectations based on their culture and family values that were all acceptable by Ali. He told them good-bye and thanked them very much for their great hospitality.

Today was Monday, July 6, and time for him to go back. Irrum stopped at his hotel early in morning while she had left for school. He was surprised to see her early. They were spending their final 2 hours together. He could not be happier than this. She had already missed her 2 classes and she followed him to the airport. She wanted to remain with him till the last second he was there in her city. He was equally sad when he saw her shedding tears at the gate of the plane when he was leaving. They both waved goodbye to each other.

Re: Online Saga

.. waiting for the next part

Re: Online Saga

how can u just trust a total stranger you never seen/met, and bring him into your house. Wow. Is this really a real story?

Re: Online Saga

Yes this is a 100% true story except their names.
A lot more happened afterwards. I am planning to add 1-2 parts a day

Re: Online Saga

More credible than some of the other stories i've read here, but I still doubt it's real.

After reading the first post, I thought it was going to be something like he gets obsessed with the screenname. Over time he would keep harassing the user, then finally gets into some online relationship. After a few months he finds out he was actually talking to a guy but it's too late for him, since he let the relationship take over his life and started failing all his classes and stuff.

Re: Online Saga

if this is indeed real than god help such people...btw y not just throw in the whole story at once...we r kinda curious u c :D

Re: Online Saga

Jadugar you are killing me with the suspense. Is it your real life story or some friend of yours ?

Re: Online Saga

Hey, if its a happy ending, then why is it so wrong :p
I hope this isn't a terrible ending:(

Re: Online Saga

i hope it is a sad ending....i just wasted 2 mins of life reading this!!!!

This is so not real

Re: Online Saga

....continued from the previous

Plane took off en route to New York. Ali was all saddened and had started missing Irrum already. He called her as soon as he had reached home. Life had become more interesting and meaningful for Ali. He could not go to sleep without talking to Irrum on a daily basis. Time was flying so fast. Two months later, Ali made another trip to Florida to meet his shehzadi again. This fall was Irrum’s last semester at the community college she was going to. She had gotten admission to go to Arizona State University at Phoenix staring from spring 1993. By the end of December, she had to relocate to Phoenix that was about two thousands miles away from her home and she did not know anybody there. She asked Ali if he could help her relocating there. Ali gladly accepted it and planned to fly from NYC to Jacksonville, drive with Irrum from Jacksonville to Phoenix and then fly back from Phoenix to NYC. As planned, Ali flew from NYC to Jacksonville and Irrum received him at the airport. They had planned to leave for Phoenix the same day. Irrum’s mom had made so much food for them to take along for their long road trip. When they were leaving, her mom put Quran over their head and asked Ali to promise not to do anything unethical with Irrum. He felt a bit weird but then understood her position of being a caring mother. Ali was 25 years old at that time while Irrum was only 20.

During past five months, they both had spent a lot of time talking on the phone. While talking to Irrum, Ali sometimes raised doubts on certain things that Irrum told him simply for the reason that they did not make logical sense. He occasionally questioned her on things that did not make sense to him but she did not appreciate that. She rather became mad on him for asking those questions. He would then trust her because he loved her. She never doubted him and wasn’t aware of the fact that Ali had a girl friend from school for the past 3 years. Ali was in his last semester of junior year at school and had met his girlfriend Bebe when he was a freshman. He did not love Bebe and never planned to marry her for the reason of her being non-Muslim. His family would have not approved her. He was having this relationship in convenience with her. They both were working together at the same office while going to school together. In fact Bebe had gotten him this nice job as a data analyst at Columbia University where she was already working as a data manager for a research department.

Ali and Bebe both had realized by now that their destination was not the same yet they were together probably because they had gotten used to each other. This fact that they were leading to different routes had caused some bitterness in their relationship lately. They were arguing with each other almost every week but then would get back to each other the same week. They had a very strange relationship that none of their friends could understand. Even they did not know what kept them together for all these years. They did have few common things though. They were both smart, missed their classes together yet got good grades. Bebe did not know that Ali had fallen in love with some other girl but sensed that he was getting distant from her. She in fact had tried to meet other guys too but still had not let go off him.

Ali had not told Irrum about Bebe at all. She never asked him about his past and he did not feel like volunteering the information. He had his full focus on Irrum. He had this magical pull towards her and never once felt any physical desire towards her. He was more than satisfied to know her, to talk to her, to see her those few times he was able to meet her. He was already seeing her to be his life partner. The fact that she was a Muslim and could speak fluent Urdu was a real attraction for him. Once in a while she talked to him in Urdu and he would have been blown away on that.

They had packed her the car with all the stuff she was to carry to Phoenix and left Jacksonville late afternoon. They had planned their entire road trip well. They knew where to stop and how far drive before taking the rest break. Ali started driving while holding her hand firmly. This was probably the best road trip of his entire life. Irrum would sing along the tapes they were playing in the car. She was playing with him and he was enjoying the every move she was making. They drove like 600 miles and then decided to spend the night at the motel. Ali got a room with two beds and they spent the night sleeping on their separate beds. Next morning they started early after having their coffee. They had enough food like chicken patties, samosas etc. to eat in the car. They were really enjoying this road trip. In about 50 hours they finally reached Phoenix at about noon. They went straight to the registrar’s office and did the basic paperwork. Then they went to the private housing complex across from the campus, she had done some communication with. This housing complex was dormitory style but private and catered ASU students only. After doing the necessary paper work and paying deposit, they got the key to the unit. This unit had two bedrooms and was to be shared by two other girls. Because school was off during Christmas break so there were no other students present at the unit. Ali was able to stay with Irrum for two nights, sleeping on the couch though. After spending two nights there, it was time for Ali to leave for New York. This was sad time again but surprisingly Irrum wasn’t much sad this time. She was really excited to be away from her home.
