Ali was becoming weaker in his resistance against the marriage. He started leaning towards the choice of his cousin Lubna who had recently completed her MS degree in psychology and was more mature among the three prospective girls. He thought that Lubna could have better suited in his situation. He was concerned about his daughter and wanted to make sure that his future wife could get along better with Ayesha. He did not know Lubna much other than the fact that she was his cousin and was doing her masters in psychology. Coincidently he had sent some gifts for her with his mom during her last visit to Pakistan and Lubna was quite excited to get those. He however had no hidden agenda behind those presents as they were purely for the goodwill gestures without any intention of their future relationship.
Ali one day called at Lubna’s home and talked to her for sometime. He wanted to get sense about her views towards life and her current standings. She appeared to be quite neutral with positive approach towards most of the important things in life. It also became eminent that she did not have anybody in her life. Ali did not give her any idea about his intentions in the conversation. He called her again few days later and this time talked more openly to her. He asked her about her marriage plans and if she had anybody in mind. She told him that there wasn’t anyone she had considered but would not mind to accept any guy if he was anything like Ali. Wow! That was a very satisfactory response for Ali. He then opened up further and mentioned to her about his recent divorce and his parents liking of her. She asked him if he was any party with his parents towards that liking. He paused for a minutes and carefully articulated his words. He told her that he had never have to consider anyone along those lines since he was married. And after going through a tough divorce he hadn’t really gotten chance to think about his prospect wife. But as his parents were so persistent to convince him, he gave careful thoughts and chose her over anybody else. He also told her about his responsibilities and liabilities and asked her to think with her cool mind. Lubna was a step ahead of him, she told him how much she loved children and how well she got along with them. She also mentioned how much she had heard about Ayesha and so much wanted to see her. All these signs seemed very promising to Ali and he was looking forward to hear Lubna’s decision.
Ali first wanted to hear Lubna’s willingness towards this marriage and then wanted his parents to talk to her parents. He knew his situation being previously married and divorced with a child so he wasn’t an ideal candidate to be married with a never married girl. He did not want his parents to be disappointed in case there was a rejection from Lubna’s parents. So he wanted to clear the ground first before his parents landed on it. Ali called Lubna a week later and asked about her decision. She told him that she was happy with this arrangement and would not disappoint him on his decision. Ali then told his mother that he was ready for the commitment and she could talk to Lubna’s parents. Ali’s mom made the call right away and talked all kind of sweetness with her sister-in-law, Lubna’s mom. She then showed her interest in Lubna and asked for her hand. Lubna’s mom said that she needed to consult with her husband. Ali’s mom considered that to be a fair deal and asked them to think about it. In few weeks, the verbal commitment was made with the intention to do the proper engagement ceremony upon their visit to Pakistan in coming months.
Rohi called Ali and told him about her possible commitment to someone that her parents had picked. Ali was a bit surprised but then took that as a great thing. She went ahead telling him how she would not be able to love anybody the way she loved him. Ali told her that everything was going to come together for the best. He assured her that love was certain to be developed once she started thinking about him. Fair enough, within few days, she told Ali how she had started to like this guy. Ali also mentioned to her about his cousin and their engagement to take place during his visit to Pakistan in coming months. She started asking all kinds of questions about Lubna. Ali did not know half of the answers even himself. He told her that she wasn’t his love or anything but just as a choice of his parents. They both were cool about these events. Rohi however promised to be always in contact with Ali.
Irrum was living a miserable life once again. She was so much mad at her God that she even yelled and screamed rubbish in her disbelief. She even denied to believe in God. She planned to go visit her husband and asked Ali if she could take Ayesha with her for ten days. Ali gave her permission with the expectation that she would return the same favor when he wanted to take Ayesha with him. She promised to oblige him with the same courtesy. Ali in the meantime decided to go to Pakistan during the same ten days while Irrum was gone to France. He discussed with his parents and also Lubna about the plan. Everybody was in the agreement so they went to Pakistan in March 2003 while Ayesha went to Paris with her mom during the spring break.
Ali and his parents went to Lubna’s home. Ali was going to see her after so many years and was quite curious to meet her. When he saw her, he didn’t get too excited. His parents however set the day for the engagement function in three days. When they went home, his parents also expressed their hesitation towards Lubna. But Ali told them to go along with the function as planned. He did not want to cancel it by hurting Lubna and her family. Engagement took place at Lubna’s house with a simple function. Ali put the diamond ring on Lubna that really had made her day. This engagement was a big surprise for most of the extended family of both sides. No one would have expected that Ali would be divorced and then got married to Lubna. Nonetheless, everybody was really happy for them. They also planned for the wedding to be done in August. Ali wanted to file for fiancée petition and hoped to get her fiancée visa by then so that he could bring her with him right after the wedding. Ali met Lubna once again the day before leaving for the US and then took his flight to sweet home. Ali’s parents stayed back in Pakistan for another month.
