Re: One more pain added to my list of experiences...
Miswak is just a herbal/natural substitute for a toothpaste and toothbrush. Just like people sometimes use oils and eggs to condition their hair instead of regular shampoo conditioners or people drink chicken soup or joshanda for their colds instead of medicine. It doesn't necessarily mean one method is better than the other, it's a matter of personal preference. In the case of the Miswak there is the motivation of it being a sunnah too.
Next thing you know we will be arguing over why we sometimes use open camp fires to cook food when we have ovens! Some people need to pull their heads out of the ground.

^ :k:
So much immaturity.
I think it is quite hard to grasp the commands, or we are so numb ?
It is sunnat-e-moukada (just a little less than obligation) to brush teeth five times a day. For us muslims it is higly recommended to follow this beautiful sunnah of holy prophet (pbuh) along with all other sunnah regarding personal hygene. Because he was a hygenic person and advised muslims to remain the same all the time.
A good Muslim does not need to pay any heeds to advice of dentists Re: brushing teeth twice a day as he is doing it 5 times a day already; religiously. ( and lots and lots of muslim actually do this)
Regarding choice of tooth brush I think it is personal preference… any person can decide after examining booth kind of tooth brushes, that which one is better for teeth.
The one made of wood (miswak ) or the one made of sythetic plastic. But if a person gives judgement after only using one type, then he/she wont be any different than a frog who never ventured into world, outside his pond.
Re: One more pain added to my list of experiences...
Its not about what you personally prefer. If someone says they personally prefer the miswak, then no problem. That is a personal preference, and you can't argue against that.
But it is when people include personal habits as part of the "sunnah" which is to be followed, that I just don't understand. Exactly WHERE does it say that if you use the miswaak, you will get bonus heaven points for it?? Exactly WHERE does it say that God likes people who use miswaak?
Gimme a break people. I have no problem with the miswaak. I have a problem that people think it actually makes them more religious than others.
Re: One more pain added to my list of experiences…
bhai jaan the sawab is not associated with using a particular tool but in observing hygiene which is a necessary part of developing spirituality…since a toothbrush cleans your teeth and fulfills that very need, it will give u sawab too…
Re: One more pain added to my list of experiences...
No, I absolutely don't have a problem with the Prophet, and you ought to be able to back up that claim of yours with some quotations of mine. Which you will find difficult to do.
I have a problem with mullahs who claim that the Prophet and God want muslims to do things that were never asked of us in the first place. I have a problem with mullahs who put words in the mouth of God, and words in the mouth of the Prophet.
The real message, like sweetdreams says, is hygeine. You need to keep your teeth clean. A miswaak did that at the time of the prophet. A miswaak is nothing less or more than a toothbrush and mouthwash. Therefore, using a miswaak doesn't bring you closer to God. Rather, its good hygeine that brings you closer to God. Pick whatever tool to accomplish that you want, it makes no difference.
Can you really assume that if the Prophet lived today, he would not use a toothbrush and toothpaste, and mouthwash?
Re: One more pain added to my list of experiences...
ashtray-yes i do...
do u know that a toothbrush is just as good.
heard of floss? its fantabulous too.....prevents periodontal disease.
heard of the whole root canal procedure...? although they didnt have it back then...it really IS a cool thing.
can u please QUIT trying to prove that SINCE a miswaak was the only tooth cleaning thing available in that century, it MUST be the best possible one. wouldnt it be freaky if the prophet had said that using a toothbrush and a REACH flossing brush is sawab? the arabs woulda been like "whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?"
Re: One more pain added to my list of experiences...
PCG the way you question the Prophet is very crude, and I have read it several times in religion, it feels very disrespectful. I cannot be bothered with posting any links, you know it, I know it and others know it here as well.
SD, you are making assumptions, the arabs (and please note that there were a lot of non arab muslims during prophets time, but you enlightened Muslims always associate only arabs to Islam) didnt go whaaaaaa at a lot of revelations in the quran, that modern science is only just discovering.
I guess it is up to every ones faith, I keep my Islam simple, you need everything explained to you in light of the limited knowledge humans have been given up till now. If tomorrow J&J or PnG starts promoting miswak on TV you will readily go to the market and buy tons of it, never questioning how it works, but oh if the prophet has done it you want a 1000 pages scientific paper before you try it.
Again no one here forced anyone to use miswak, some people like creating issues and I am getting sick of it.
Re: One more pain added to my list of experiences…
yeah but u dont get my point do u? he didnt talk about an instrument that was not yet invented…even the revelations that were revealed were something that people in that era could relate to.
blueberries are deemed the healthiest fruit in the world…why are only olives mentioned in islamic texts? could it be that the middle east HAD no blueberries?
who said we want a hundred pages of scientific paper written on its benefits? no body is talking about its health benefits…but rather we are discussing the fact that when u use SUNAAH…it applies to the fact that miswak is used for hygiene and a toothbrush does the same thing. there may be lots of things that ancient people did better than us, there are alot of things WE do better than them too.
Re: One more pain added to my list of experiences…
Actually, you will be surprised to know the answer but arguing is useless given the mentality block we see in this thread. There are times when even in Quran Prophet:saw: was told about certain mentalities of people whom he couldn’t have convinced towards guidance. Hence, he was told to pass the message and move on.
Re: One more pain added to my list of experiences…
^^
Sure…Sunnah is what the Prophet did specifically…And Wajib is what the Quran proclaims…
Pork is unhygienic and fatal if parts of it are left uncooked…Recent advancements in science make the Pork very hygienic…
No Muslim eats Pork because it was unhygienic…They don’t because they are Haram…Despite it being very clean now…
Similarly, it is not chemicals and solutions that make up a Sunnah or Fard…It is doing exactly what the Prophet :saw: did…
Wuzu is not cleaning yourself with soaps and moisturizers, it is cleansing oneself as perscribed by the Prophet :saw:…
Miswaak is not about hygiene or brushing your teeth…It is cleansing oneself as the Prophet :saw: perscribed…
I know I know…I am a backward thinking person stuck in the 7th century…But if that’s what it takes to be closer to Allah :swt: and His Messenger :saw:, so be it…
Re: One more pain added to my list of experiences...
What??? Miswaak is all about hygeine. If you think you're doing something as the Prophet did it and earning brownie points, then please do show me an ayah that asks you to immitate every behavior of the prophet without their being a message behind it.
