ATHENS: World champions Germany squeezed a 2-1 win out of their first pool match against Pakistan – and their army of rowdy supporters – in the men’s Olympic hockey tournament on Sunday.

Germany’s powerful, defensive play managed to keep Pakistan’s flair-filled attacks from turning into goals but the score could have been reversed if Pakistan’s famed flicker Sohail Abbas had been on form.

Pakistan won two penalty corners but Abbas rocketed the first over the bar and shot the second wide.

“We made the opportunities and then we missed them. It’s not what we wanted to do,” captain Nadeem Muhammad said after the Pool A match, played to the cheers of thousands of Pakistan supporters.

Top-ranked Germany spent little time in attacking territory in the first half but just one cross in the seventh minute was enough for Bjoern Emmerling to scoop the ball into goal.

Bjoern Michel (31st) made it 2-0 and Rehan Butt (43rd) replied for Pakistan.

ATHENS: Indian hockey team started their Olympic campaign on a dismal note, bowing to defending champions Holland 1-3 in their opening Pool B match here on Sunday.

The defeat came as a jolt to the Indians, who are seeking to regain an Olympic medal after a gap of 24 years – the last being a gold in the boycott-marred Moscow Games in 1980.

Marten Eikelboom started the scoring for the winners with a second minute strike before Teun de Nooijer (50th) and Taeke Taekema (54th) added to the tally in the second half.

India’s consolation goal came through Gagan Ajit Singh with just one minute to go for the hooter.

The Indians, who came to the tournament with two foreign coaches, Gerhard Rach and Oliver Kurtz, and months of training in foreign institutes, failed to make much impression.

After conceding a goal early on, they got a number of chances to equalise. But all the star perfomers Gagan Ajit Singh, Deepak Thakur and Dhanraj Pillay failed to make the most of the opportunities they got.

All the three made some fine solo runs only to see their effort fizzle out near the opposition circle in the face of some smart work by the Dutch defenders and seasoned goalkeeper Guus Vogels.

If India’s performance in the first half was patchy, it was no better in the second as they struggled for ball possession against some good stick work by the winners.

The only bright spot in India’s play was the work of captain Dilip Tirkey, midfielder Viren Rasquinha and goalkeeper Adrian D’Souza, who thwarted several Dutch attempts.

The side suffered a setback in the 54th minute when Dilip Tirkey left the field after being hit on the head by a Taekema shot from a set-piece that deflected off the stick of William Xalco. Gagan Ajit’s goal came too late as the Indians had left with absolutely no time to make a comeback.

The Indians need to beat South Africa in their next match on Tuesday to be in the hunt for a place in the semifinals.

In other matches of the competition, Australia thrashed their trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand 4-1 in Pool B. In the same pool, South Africa beat Argentina 2-1. In Pool A, Germany beat Pakistan 2-1, Korea drew Spain 1-1 and Great Britain beat Egypt 3-1.

Pakistan against Egypt:

02:38 Goal
Jawad opens the scoring for PAK with a tap in after a mess in the goal mouth. This was PAK first attack of the match. PAK leads 1-0.

Pakistan 3-0 up in first 15 minutes. :hula:

Two goals to Kashif and one to Nadeem. Pakistan playing brilliantly. Egypt has played well and deserved atleast a goal with their stylish play but pakistan defence is upto it.

Sohail Abbas scores in the 30 minute.

Pak 4 Egypt 0.

First Half score : Pakistan 5 - 0 Egypt

Absolutely marvellous play. Sohail Abbas scored twice and so did Kashif Jawad with one goal to captain Nadeem. Come on, make it a dozen jawaano! :jhanda:

Pak 6 - 0 Egypt

Sohail Abbas scored his third of the match. It is a good omen that he got his form back. 10 goals would be wonderful for Pakistan's goal difference.

Paksitan 6 Egypt 1

EDIT okay sorry goal was disallowed probably. Its still 6-0

It is 7/0 now. :)

All these goals could come in handy if a net RR situation airses.

Final score : Pakistan 7 - 0 Egypt

Second half lacked a bit of finishing that was brilliant in first half with at least two open goals were missed. But I think the only negative Pakistan could take from this game would be the amount of penalty corners conceded. Sohail Abbas back to his devestating best with four goals.

The score reading is a bit decieving to be honest. Make no mistake, Egypt is a team full of skills and style, they need to be a bit more dominant in front of goal and they will give any team a tough team.

Next up is Korea who is looking good after drawing with Spain and beating Great Britain. Pre-pre quarter final situation. Best of luck Pakistan.

ehsan bhai cricket hangover ;)

wah wah !!! :jhanda:

:hehe: yes too much cricket.

27 minutes into the first half, and spain leads germany by 1-0. Spain is playing an aggressive game, and if they can pull it off, it would be just awesome for pak.

13 more minutes to go before the game ends. Germany putting a lot of pressure, but Spain still holding on to 1-0 lead.

Daymn, Germany have scored.
