“Ninjabis” learn to fight back in Britain

LONDON (Reuters) - Anyone tempted to pick on a headscarf-wearing Muslim woman better hope they don’t run into a Ninjabi.

Every week around 30 Muslim women, most wearing veils, gather in a community centre in east London to learn how to block, knee and punch would-be attackers or lecherous men targeting passive-looking victims.

The organisers, who named the classes after Japanese Ninja warriors and women who wear the hijab, say Muslim women are looking to fight back against unwanted advances and a rising number of anti-Muslim attacks.

“The ladies love the Ninjabi thing. It gives them a good giggle,” said class instructor Dee Terry, who is not a Muslim herself.

One of the attendees, 31-year-old mother Mahmuda Mazid, said she took up the classes after a gang of youths tried to rob her teenage brother while she was with him in a local park.

“There was this sheer feeling of helplessness that I couldn’t help myself or my brother… and there was absolute rage,” she said. "I knew I had to do something to equip myself.

“In the classes I saw protection and self defence. That’s what I needed.”

The classes start with a warm-up and then the women – no men are allowed – practise punches, strikes using the heel of the hand, knee strikes to the groin and defences against knives and sticks. Terry also teaches the women how to deter potential attackers by looking assertive.

The loose full-length clothing favoured by Muslim women rules out high-kicking manoeuvres but does not otherwise hinder movement, says Terry.

The Hijab and the Niqab – which covers the face and leaves only the eyes visible – clearly identify Muslim women, increasing their chances of becoming victims of anti-Muslim hostility. But Terry says Islamic clothing itself does not make it easier to attack a woman.

“An attacker can pull your headscarf but they can also pull your hair, so Islamic clothes don’t make that much of a difference,” added Terry, who also teaches Judo, Jujitsu and Kickboxing.

“PERVY MEN” AND “HOODIES”

In the dilapidated area where the classes are held, Muslim women said their biggest worry was harassment from “pervy men” and the violent anti-social behaviour of teenagers from urban low-income communities, popularly called “hoodies” and “chavs”.

In other areas of London, Muslim women said growing hostility towards Muslims – commonly called Islamophobia – since London’s July 7th bombings in 2005 was a big fear.

Attacks on Muslims in London nearly quadrupled in the days after the July attacks. Figures collated by London’s Metropolitan Police, and presented in a report by the Muslim Safety Forum, showed 303 attacks in July 2005, up from 82 in the previous month.

Azad Ali, chairman of the forum, said the attacks ranged from verbal abuse and vandalism of mosques to physical attacks. But because of limitations in the way attacks are reported, the real number is likely to be far higher, he added.

“ENTER THE NINJABI”

Official figures cite London as having the largest proportion of Muslims in the UK at 3.8 percent. The Ninjabi classes are held in the Newham area of the capital, where Muslims make up 24 percent of local inhabitants.

The organisers said the classes were a response to overwhelming demand from Muslim women.

“It was a need. Women were coming and asking for self- defence classes. We had heard of increasing Islamophobia and other sorts of attacks on Muslim women,” said Mizan Raja, a coordinator of Islamic Circles, the organisation running the classes.

The organisers say although similar self-defence classes are common the light-hearted approach which respects the women’s faith has made the Ninjabi classes massively popular.

“We could fill a class a day. It’s totally oversubscribed,” said Raja.

The organisers plan to split the class according to experience, using names inspired by 1970s Hong Kong films starring martial arts legend Bruce Lee.

The beginners’ level will be called “Enter the Ninjabi”, the next will be “Return of the Ninjabi”, then “Way of the Ninjabi”. The organisers also plan to expand the Ninjabi concept.

“It’s about empowering Muslim women… We could do it throughout the country,” Raja added.

Comment:

Excellent initiative and in line with the Sunnah and a great way to teach Islamophobes a lesson they wont forget and will also deter Muslims men with the cultural mindset not to engage in wife beating.

Might be an idea for the sisters not to mention they have qualifications in martial arts to prospective husbands in case they frighten them away, after all husband beating is quite under reported.

So will any sisters from here be signing up to become a Ninjabi?

Re: "Ninjabis" learn to fight back in Britain

yes.....inshaAllah......i need to write an application to the council to arrange female martial arts classes as i live outside London.

im not doing it to fight back anyone.....its just my hobby.

shock I am so disturbed to find that the dress which is supposed to protect us stupid weak group of women doesn't even do its job.

sarcasm

Re: "Ninjabis" learn to fight back in Britain

well, uhm

it's a sort of good thing......atleast they'll be able to stand up for themselves?

Re: "Ninjabis" learn to fight back in Britain

Good for the sisters who are learning martial arts..

It's always been a must for Ethnics in this country whether men or women but now it's even more important for women who dress in accordance with Islamic rules...

My mum is not Niqaabi but she wears a headscarf so I'm going to convince her to start going to the female martial arts classes at the local gym..

Re: "Ninjabis" learn to fight back in Britain

PCG, do not blame the dress. It is the mentality of those who are doing the harassment. You should really stop pisssssing on any thing related to Islam jsut because you do not agree with it.

Re: "Ninjabis" learn to fight back in Britain

This is good to hear.. Although I always thought anti-muslim attacks would be on muslim guys and not on hijabi women.. hijabi women are probably targets of verbal attacks or taunts.. cases of thugs physically attacking hijabi women have gottta b very rare..

Re: "Ninjabis" learn to fight back in Britain

This dress code of Hijaab protects the girls in the sense that they don't seduce perverts the way many non-Hijabis use their bodies in the streets.

Re: "Ninjabis" learn to fight back in Britain

That's called Secularism in the East (moderate Islam).

Re: "Ninjabis" learn to fight back in Britain

Verbal attacks or taunts don't only aim at Hijaabi women in the west but at non-Hijabi-men too for their brown skins without any special dress code.

Re: "Ninjabis" learn to fight back in Britain

^^ Yes.. ofcourse.. I'm just saying that I think that there must be a LOT more cases of hijabi women being targets of verbal abuse/taunts than physical attacks.. hence the relevance of the Ninjabi classes is very limited

Re: "Ninjabis" learn to fight back in Britain

Women are less likely to report it because if their brother/hubby/dad/son found out he would go and muder the person who did it and they don't want trouble for their men but it does happen... It's men's nature, I mean Allaah forbid agar meri mama ko koi kuch keh ga to mein ussey bahot maaroun ga, shed qatal bhi kar doun and I'm a very meek guy in real life.

I use to know so many girls at school who use to get dogs (rottweilers and satffies) set on them, not long ago I read about a Muslim woman who had her scarf ripped off and some man urinated on her, also heard about plenty of women who wear the veil having beer bottles thrown at them...

Educated white people are not like that, even if they hate the scarves and veils they'll tolerate them till their wish for them to be banned comes true, at most they'll only make "post box" jokes amongst themselves but the chavy/hoody type people who live on council estates and feed on dole are down right xenophobic because they don't tolerate/understand other cultures.

Re: "Ninjabis" learn to fight back in Britain

Good for them ! Hey this is a skill/ability that EVERY woman needs to have to protect herself, NOT just women who wear hte scarf/niqab. Every womna should be able to protect herself against degenerates like that....

erm, and i'm gnna be the devil's advocate here but what pCG was referring to was how hijab can protect women from harrassment. Obviously from the article, it shows that's not tru at all because of how many women are getting attacked because of theri religion (which is made obvious by their clothing). And she was obviously being sarcastic so theres no need to jump on her for that...

Now I"m not saying they should take it off becuase that will prevent them frm getting attacked but rather they should be equipped with the skills that if they ever were in any sort of situation, in Britan or in pak, wearing the hijab or not waring it, they should be able to protect themselves and their families...

Re: "Ninjabis" learn to fight back in Britain

Again twisting the facts my friend. :)
This is not secularism.

Re: "Ninjabis" learn to fight back in Britain

They need to be holding these classes in Iran so the sisters can protect themselves against police harrassment.

Re: "Ninjabis" learn to fight back in Britain

Peace dear Hareem01

You don't wanna learn to fight back? Why? The 'o' is only two letters away from the 'u' on the keyboard ... I'm worried!

Re: "Ninjabis" learn to fight back in Britain

Peace Sis PyariCgudia

Yes you are right! It is supposed to protect but in societies where the moral levels become far too low then the very thing that is there to protect becomes a harm to have. It is like trying to walk into a ghetto with a shirt and tie on. The blending in the background begins to take greater precendence where such life and safety situations become manifest. If however, the Muslim sisters and nothing is against them here want to follow Islam more closely then with their hijabs they should travel with their mahram also.

Looking at the quote more closely however, we see that 'pervy men' would have to be very twisted to approach modest women. It is not considered pervy in this society for a man to 'perve' over an immodest woman, in fact it is liked and encouraged. The violence is caused by the media seeding hatred into these easily influenced teens.

What we see here is picking on the exception to justify the negation of the act. You should realise that even though this happens with hijabis it does so to a lesser degree. I still think women should learn martial arts, but if they are concerned about welfare then mahram is the way forward without compromising the hijab, otherwise attempting to blend in by being modest is also a justfiable alternative. Sister ... I don't blame you for being sarcy ... or spiteful with us, it's 'cos we haven't quite learned the art of being 'nice'.

Re: "Ninjabis" learn to fight back in Britain

Perhaps these sisters can use their new found martial arts skills on teaching Muslim men a thing or do if they try to lay a hand on them or something.... :)

Re: "Ninjabis" learn to fight back in Britain

Therefore, you accede that you can be attacked for nonsexual reasons, and rather political reasons. So these women, despite wearing a burqa, are still being attacked. In this case, reverse it. The environment they're in is intolerant of their dress code and culture. Better to keep yourself safe by not wearing the burqa than by wearing it.

There is no evidence to suggest that wearing a burqa keeps you safer than not wearing a burqa. One can be reasonably modestly dressed and still not be covering their faces, their hair, arms, etc. I don't wear a burqa, I live in a very dangerous neighborhood, and thankfully, no one has attacked me yet. But that's because I practice safety procedures. Not because of what I'm wearing.

Re: "Ninjabis" learn to fight back in Britain

Oh, well, you see, the burqa is not part of Islam. If it were, I'd be more respectful towards it. But, well. Its not.
