Pakhtunkhwa
Within the NWFP Provincial Assembly the first party to table a bill for the renaming of NWFP was the Pakistan Peoples Party NWFP chapter under Aftab Khan Sherpao.
Sherpao cleverly exploited the renaming issue to cause a split between the Awami National Party and it's right wing allies (traditional opponents of the ANP's ethnic politics and in particular renaming).
The bill failed to pass in it's first attempt but the issue did anger opponents in the party of the ANP's alliance with the Pakistan Muslim League (PML).
The ANP leadership however cited it's lack of a majority in the provincial assembly and how the issue has not been placed as part of a formal agreement with the leader of the Muslim League Nawaz Sharif as a reason for the bills failure to pass.
Prior to the 1997 general elections the ANP obtained a formal commitment from Nawaz Sharif on the renaming issue as part of their political/electoral allinace prior to the elections.
After the alliances victory in the 1997 elections, the PPP under Aftab Sherpao again tabled a bill for a resoluiton on the renaming issue in the provincial assembly.
The issue was eventually taken up by the Assembly in the latter half of 1997, and after a brief debate the NWFP Assembly speaker Hidayatullah Chamkani called the issue to a vote asking those members opposing the issue to stand up.
This move caught the Muslim League members offguard as they had already decided they would not support the renaming issue.
The Pakhtoonkhwa resolution , was supported by the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and the Jamiat Ulema -i- Islam (JUI) (F) while the PML abstained. It was opposed only by two members both Pakhtoons - from the PML (J) Salim Saifullah and Humayun Saifullah (Yusufzai, 16 November 1997).
Despite the resolutions passing the backlash in the rightwing press and conservative supporters of Nawaz Sharif in Punjab in particular was intense. The issue was then addressed at the Federal level as a formal renaming could only be done through a constitutional amendment requiring a two third majority. Nawaz Sharif under pressure from the right wing of his party and outside backtracked on his previous committment. In an attempt to save the alliance, attempts were made to resolve the issue by Nawaz Sharif by instead offering a compromise name like Nuristan or Abasin. The offer was rejected by the Awami National Party by it's leadership and the ANP withdrew from the Federal government and provincial government.

Yeah, I guess youre right, but its kinda funny how these 2-3 delusioned minds are always talking about (since forever) about how pakistani pakhtuns and NWFP will unite with NWFP based on the durand line, completely ignoring the fact that Afghanistan is being run by the US, and is in complete shambles, with the largest number of refugees living offa Pakistans generosity. Just to put down PAkistan, they would even side with other nationalist idiots, belonging to other provinces, just to get their point, and now they are also talking about taking over their land, or suggest it belongs to them. All I can say is, no one in Pakistan really cares about these cyber-jihadi-kabuli-commie-nationalists living in the west, and their dreams will only remain 'just' posts on discussion forums lol. Nice post goliko, it is worth mentioning that the ANP left the Government it formed with Nawaz Sharif after the 97 elections when NAwaz and his party refused to change the name. However, PML[N] back then never made a promise as to what the name would be, they only said they would support the renaming, so all other choices were just as valid at that time. I remember reading Barrister Baacha's letters on the news daily and later he flipped sides too.

Instead we should add DI Khan, Mianwali to FATA and call it Khattak province. This would allow local people to be MPAs and their own Chief minister and a Governor.
Another option is to have Peshawar take over FATA. That hasn't been proposed and I doubt Frontier assembly can manage FATA the way tribals want.

fact is pashtoons are living the north of balochistan and getting most of the mone from the biggest economic activity of the prvince: mining and gas fields:halo:…they do have a dialect different than those from NWFP, as the pashtoons from Quetta say: pashtoonistan…while those from pekhawar, say: pakhtoonistan…
the heck about borders…why do pakhtoon want a part of balochistan? cause it’s already a matter of fact…anyway, if things stay the same, there is no problem…pashtoon can keep on living in balochistan, while pakhtoon live in NWFP…no single province named after our people…spread over two countries anyways…

Tmx actually they did… Nawaz Sharif supported Pakhtunistan as a name (that was agreed in exchange for the ANP dropping its claim on the Chief Ministers job) ..but the ANP said that was controversial and stuck to Pakhtunkhwa..the usual pathan bashing kicked off in the conservative press in Lahore when the resolution passed. However I think Goliko has pointed out the obvious.. the renaming pakhtunkhwa had the support of the main parties in NWFP, PPP, ANP and JUI.
As far as the NWFP government not showing interest in FATA..the NWFP assembly has passed several resolutions asking for FATA to be brought under the provincial governments control..they have also passed unanimous resolutions asking for a fair deal as far as hydel royalties and provincial rights were concerned..as is the way those resolutions were ignored by Islamabad.

One ethnicity shouldn't define a province. That is why I am against creating Mohajristan.
Adding few urban areas in Khattak province will be good. Otherwise it will remain a backward tribal area.

I think that’s the point. Things change and what was written in poetry years ago is not always or should be applicable today. The definition of Afghan needs to be exapanded to include Tajiks, Uzbeks etc.

Mohajiristan who used that name other than you???MQM is accused of jinnahpur which they dont say that they never wanted to a separate province.If they even wanted a separate province in the past now they say that they are sindhi and will fight for rights of the sindhi people and all the poor of pakistan
In urban sindh all the ethnicities live in karachi mohajirs are little less than half and the rest of the population of karachi has sindhi punjabi baloch pashtuns and even bengalis.

Extracting toll illegally by local tribes was considered an act of treason in those days and Mughals rightly persecuted Khushal Khan for it. And there is no need for another thread on bisexuality of Pashtuns, the whole world knows it.

SB: Ethnicity and protest are two different things ..there was no objection from the sereiki speakers of dera city over the issue..the Hindko speakers of Kohat, Peshawar and gujjars and kohistanis were also supportive of renaming..reaction in Hazara was muted..after all there mpas did not object to the resolution. The same thing happened with Rajanpur the Mazari belt chose to join Punjab instead of Baluchistan.
